No days off!!

One school brave enough to bust the schedule.

With spring break in full bloom this past week, every 1A Olympic League school not wearing Coupeville uniforms sat idle, in every sport.

The Wolves, though, were busy, getting in non-conference tilts in softball, baseball and soccer across three of the six days.

Things get back to mostly normal as we move into a new week, as all the lazy bones schools rejoin CHS on the field.

As they get back at it, Coupeville is holding on to the lead in varsity wins for both spring and for the 2017-2018 school year.

With victories in all three sports which have played a league game, the Wolves are up 6-4 on Klahowya this spring and 37-32 for the year.

Port Townsend (22) and Chimacum (10) each have a single win this spring.

Just about everything went right for Coupeville High School athletics Tuesday afternoon.

The Wolves swept to three wins in four games, knocking off a pair of 2A schools in tennis and softball and nabbing a landmark win on the soccer pitch.

Plus, after a lot of rain, the day was dry and somewhat sunny and noted camera bug John Fisken was in town and clicking away.

During his visit to the prairie, the paparazzi hit JV softball, varsity tennis and JV baseball bouts, delivering a smorgasbord of glossy pics.

Doubles duos spark huge win!!

It was a day for surprises.

After non-stop rain soaked the prairie the last couple of days, Tuesday didn’t see a single drop, allowing the Coupeville High School girls tennis team a somewhat unexpected chance to play.

Then, once they took the court, the Wolf netters swept all four doubles matches, winning the final one in a third-set tiebreaker, to stun previously undefeated Granite Falls 4-3.

The non-conference victory, coming against a 2A school, lifts Coupeville to 1-4 on the season.

Their record doesn’t tell the whole tale for the Wolves, as a team repping one of the smallest 1A student bodies in the state has played 80% of it matches so far against 2A schools.

Learning under fire against schools with deep rosters is teaching the CHS netters to persevere, and it paid off handsomely against Granite.

Coupeville’s top two doubles duos swept to quick victories, its #3 unit pulled out a somewhat-tougher battle, and then the #4 tandem won the day.

With the match tied at 3-3, Zara Bradley and Jillian Mayne split the opening two sets of their match with their Tiger foes, then found some magic buried deep within.

The deciding third-set tiebreaker was over quickly, as the Wolf duo scorched Granite Falls 10-1.

With the win, Coupeville heads into its longest break of the season.

The Wolves aren’t scheduled to play again until Apr. 9, when they host another 2A school, North Kitsap.

That kicks off (weather permitting) an epic run of seven matches in nine days, including Coupeville’s first three Olympic League matches (two against Klahowya, one against Chimacum).

They’re punching above their weight class.

Coupeville High School, which sits on the lowest rung of 1A, has played 10 of 18 games this spring against 2A schools.

That, naturally, has skewed the win-loss record a bit, as the Wolves are 4-4 against schools in their own (sorta) weight class, and 3-6-1 when playing teams from a higher berth.

The scheduling disparity will shift (a bit) this coming week, with six of the nine scheduled games against 1A competition, including five happening inside the Olympic League.

Wolf baseball and boys soccer have two conference games apiece, but the biggest thing on the schedule is softball’s visit Wednesday to Klahowya.

With Port Townsend and Chimacum having bailed on softball this season, dropping their teams for a year due to a lack of players, the Olympic League race for supremacy is just a two-team battle.

That means each of the three games the Coupeville diamond women play against Klahowya (Mar. 28, Apr. 20 and Apr. 30) take on a much-bigger emphasis than normal.

The path to hanging a league banner is simple — beat KSS and cue the celebration.

The trial by fire continues.

Coupeville High School, among the very smallest of all 1A schools in Washington state, is opening its season with a run of non-conference tilts against large 2A schools.

Tuesday afternoon it was undefeated Kingston, which boasts a student body two-and-a-half times that of CHS, visiting Whidbey.

Somewhat predictably, the Buccaneers left town with a 6-1 non-conference win, running their record to 4-0 and dropping the Wolves to 0-4.

But all of this has been prep for Coupeville facing off with its own 1A Olympic League foes, and the pursuit of a fourth-straight league title.

The Wolves, who are 15-0 in the three-year history of the league, get their first taste of conference play Thursday, when they welcome Klahowya (0-3) to town.

When the Eagles show up, Coupeville’s doubles duos will be the featured attraction.

Sophomores Tia Wurzrainer and Avalon Renninger romped to a straight-sets win at #2 doubles Tuesday, while seniors Sage Renninger and Payton Aparicio pushed their Kingston rivals to a third-set tiebreaker in a very close match.
