Port Townsend heard Daniel Olson was on his way, and they took the easiest way out.

Unable to face being shredded by the Coupeville Middle School marksman and his run ‘n gun teammates, the mainlanders fell back on weather conditions and postponed Thursday’s scheduled basketball games.

The Wolves were about to board the bus and head to the ferry when the news came in that they would no longer be going to Blue Heron Middle School.

Earlier in the afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning to go from 2-10 PM today.

Southerly winds are expected to increase up to 40 mph late in the afternoon or early evening, with gusts of 60 mph possible.

With a very strong chance the Port Townsend/Coupeville ferry would revert back to being the Vomit Comet in the choppy water (or possibly be sidelined altogether in the wind), the decision was made not to potentially strand the Wolves on the other side.

No word yet on when, or if, the games will be made up.

Opening night was a huge hit.

Coupeville Middle School kicked off its boys’ basketball season Monday with two wins — the 7th graders romped, the 8th graders pulled it out in OT — a full gym and even a roving photographer or two.

While we have yet to see what pics Junior Photo Bomb Queen Mollie Bailey might have snapped (I’m working on it), we can present to you some of John Fisken’s work.

Matthew Kelley (10) will not be denied. The ball belongs to him.

The guys have first.

Middle school basketball officially kicks off next Monday (Nov. 30) when Coupeville hosts Chimacum.

Tip-off time is 3:15, with the 8th graders playing in the high school gym and the 7th graders holding court across the hallway in the middle school gym.

That will hold true for a 10-game schedule which has the CMS boys playing at home on Mondays and on the road Thursdays.

The boys wrap their season Jan. 14, then the Wolf girls will inherit the court starting Feb. 1.

As you mentally prepare for the home opener, here’s a look at the roster, which numbers 27 players including a number of guys who have been already making names for themselves at the SWISH level.

So many photos still out there…

As we enter that stretch between the end of fall sports and the start of winter sports, I’m going back through the mountains of pics shot during September and October, in an effort to retrieve some of those which never saw the light of day.

It wasn’t that they weren’t great shots, but they ended up being bumped at the time for one reason or another.

Now, we’re reclaiming them.

This time around, it’s Coupeville Middle School volleyball pics shot by travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

Basketball begins again.

Well, in a week it does.

Next Monday, Nov. 9, Coupeville Middle School boys’ hoops hotshots get a head start on everyone with their first day of practice.

CMS girls start Feb. 1, after the boys are done, while the high school squads kick off practice Nov. 16.

The CMS boys, who are coached by Bob Martin (8th) and Randy King (7th), are set to kick off game play the last day of November, with a 10-game schedule.

The Wolves will be home on Mondays this season (action tips off at 3:15) and hit the road Thursdays, with two games each against five opponents.

When the girls take over in February they’ll flip the schedule, with road games on Mondays and home games Thursday.

I would tell you to laminate the schedules, but, if the past is any kind of reliable indication, it might be better to write the dates down with a pencil and keep a big eraser handy.

To keep up to date on any changes, pop over to: http://coupeville.tandemcal.com/
