Hoop it up!!

Basketball begins again.

Well, in a week it does.

Next Monday, Nov. 9, Coupeville Middle School boys’ hoops hotshots get a head start on everyone with their first day of practice.

CMS girls start Feb. 1, after the boys are done, while the high school squads kick off practice Nov. 16.

The CMS boys, who are coached by Bob Martin (8th) and Randy King (7th), are set to kick off game play the last day of November, with a 10-game schedule.

The Wolves will be home on Mondays this season (action tips off at 3:15) and hit the road Thursdays, with two games each against five opponents.

When the girls take over in February they’ll flip the schedule, with road games on Mondays and home games Thursday.

I would tell you to laminate the schedules, but, if the past is any kind of reliable indication, it might be better to write the dates down with a pencil and keep a big eraser handy.

Naps are great.

Probably not a good idea when you’re planning to cover middle school volleyball live, and sleep right through actually leaving the house to go attend said match, but it happens.

In my defense, I was up early to do work for the Help House in Oak Harbor, and thought I’d catch a few moments in the middle.

Four hours later I come back to the world, at which point the Coupeville Middle School spikers have already dismantled visiting Port Townsend … from what I was told by people who actually showed up.

Anyway, here’s some lovely photos from previous matches that we haven’t seen before, and call it even.

Rumble in the mud!!

Having survived a mud bowl, the Wolves celebrate.

They were back in action, and hard at work.

A week after postponing a game due to a lack of eligible players, the Coupeville Middle School football squad returned Wednesday, taking the long ride down to Forks.

Once they got to the town that former CHS football coach Ron Bagby once owned as a young gridiron warrior, the Wolves battled through a mud bowl, falling 34-14.

Jean Lund-Olsen grabbed the spotlight, scoring a touchdown and snaring a pair of sacks on defense.

Not to be outdone, Mason Grove opened the scoring for Coupeville with a touchdown of his own, then tacked on PAT runs after both scores.

Sean Toomey-Stout was a beast on both sides of the ball, while the Wolf line — led by Trevor Bell, Trystan Ford and Gavin Knoblich, operated with great efficiency.

Coupeville returns to action next Wednesday, Oct. 28, when it travels to Port Townsend.

The longtime Coupeville High School/Middle School coach picked up a new sport at the last second this year, taking over the CMS 8th grade volleyball squad a match into the season when coach Sadi Foltz abruptly left to take a new job.

Jump forward to Monday night, and, after a long road trip to the town former CHS football coach Ron Bagby (well … and “Twilight“) built, King and his spikers emerged with a stunning upset.

The Wolves knocked off undefeated Forks 29-27, 25-20 for the win of the season.

The score is all the info we have at the moment (and nothing on the 7th grade squad), so let’s toss out a bunch of photos to fill the rest of your time.
