One (winter) coach to rule them all

You don’t have to fight, but it’s more interesting if you do.

It’s that time of the season, when David is looking for some sweet, sweet page hits, so he tosses a group of coaches in a (digital) room, slaps 50 hours on the clock, and waits to see who emerges triumphant.

The battle to be named “Top Coach of the Winter” kicks off Saturday, Dec. 28 at 7 AM, and closes Monday, Dec. 30 at 9 AM(ish).

We have 13 coaches repping middle and high school basketball, as well as CHS cheer.

As always, you can vote as many times as your little heart (and voting fingers) desire.

Now, as in every poll here on Coupeville Sports, there’s no real trophy, just a nice warm glow in the chest of the winner.

And the chance for that coach to lord it over every other coach, at least until we launch the “Top Coach of the Spring” a couple of months from now.

To the coaches involved, if you don’t care about the award, no worries.

And if you? Let the bodies hit the floor!

Boon climbs to the mountaintop

The bigger school is back on top.

Breaking a run of three straight polls won by Coupeville Middle School coaches, CHS cheer guru BreAnna Boon has claimed the title of Top Coach of the Fall.

Boon, who finished second last year, held off CMS cross country coach, and defending champion, Elizabeth Bitting, to win a slug-fest which drew 8,000+ votes over the past 50 hours.

While there’s no physical award, the internet fame, and resulting warm glow in the chest of the winner, is undeniable.

Boon, who led most of the way, then put the hammer down early Monday, finished with 3,081 votes to Bitting’s 2,219.

Rounding out the top five were three newcomers to the world of Coupeville Sports coaching polls.

CHS C-Team volleyball coach Krimson Rector (995 votes), CHS cross country coach Luke Samford (341), and CMS boys soccer coach Reese Cernick (254) all had strong showings in a field of 21 coaches.

While she didn’t win, CMS volleyball coach Jenna Vester had the biggest climb in the waning hours, jumping from 19th to 6th as the contest wore down.

With Top Coach of the Fall voting in the books, there have been six coaching polls run by Coupeville Sports, with CHS and CMS now having split at 3-3.

Past winners include Ryan King (CHS football), Randy King (CHS track), Bitting (CMS cross country), Dante and DeAndre Mitchell (CMS basketball), and Jon Gabelein (CMS track).

Now, it’s on to Top Coach of the Winter in a few months, when Boon will have a chance to go back-to-back, if she can best the combined forces of CHS and CMS basketball.

Time to get in some training now.

Many votes, one champ

This doesn’t have to turn into a brawl.

But it probably should.

Twenty-one coaches — 16 from Coupeville High School, and five from our middle school — enter a (digital) room, and 50 hours later, one emerges.

The battle to be named “Top Coach of the Fall” kicks off Saturday, Oct. 5 at 9 AM, and closes Monday, Oct. 7 at 11 AM.

During that time frame, you can vote as many times as your little heart (and voting fingers) desire.

There are no restrictions, and you won’t be blocked in any way.

Or, at least that’s the hope.

Now, as in every poll/rumble of the past here on Coupeville Sports, there’s no real trophy, just a nice warm glow in the chest of the winner.

And the chance for that coach to lord it over every other coach, at least until we launch the “Top Coach of the Winter” a couple of months from now.

Grove hits nothing but net

Mason Grove is your new internet king.

The Coupeville High School junior held off 24 rivals across the past 100 hours and emerged Tuesday as the winner of the 7th annual Coupeville Sports Athlete Supreme.

He joins Nick Streubel, Amanda Fabrizi, CJ Smith, Hunter Smith, Joey Lippo, and Ethan Spark in an exclusive club.

And, like them, he gets no trophy, no cash, no trip to Bali – just a warm glow in his chest, knowing voters like him, they really like him.

Sometimes that’s enough.

After the fan bases of the last two winners dropped nuclear bombs, successfully hacking wide-open, no-restriction voting, I clamped down a bit this time around.

Voters were held to one vote per device, every six hours, though it’s entirely possible there still might have been some shenanigans around the edges.

If so, good for you for figuring out ways to beat the system.

With the new restrictions, the final vote totals aren’t as high as they were in recent years, but the race also stayed competitive down the stretch, so that’s nice.

In the end, Grove and Chelsea Prescott, both three-sport stars, pulled away from everyone else.

The lead switched up a couple of times, before Grove’s fan base built a margin which held up across the final two days.

He finished with 1,065 votes, while Prescott tallied 864.

Rounding out the top five were Scout Smith (192), Maya Toomey-Stout (172), and Sarah Wright (124).

Gabelein runs laps around other coaches

It was a blowout.

Coupeville Middle School track coach Jon Gabelein put the hammer down midway through our 48-hour poll to decide the “Top Coach of the Spring” and never looked back.

Pulling in more than 50% of the 3,058 votes cast, he bested 17 other CHS and CMS coaches to win a highly-coveted, yet totally imaginary, award.

In somewhat of a surprise, Gabelein’s win also means middle school coaches won all three season polls this school year.

CMS cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting won in the fall, while CMS hoops coaches, and twin brothers, Dante and DeAndre Mitchell tied for top honors in the winter.

This time around, Gabelein finished with 1,676 votes, while CHS assistant baseball coach Aaron Lucero (540) held down second-place.

Rounding out the top five were CHS head softball coach Kevin McGranahan (282), CHS softball assistant Morgan Young (128), and CHS head baseball coach Chris Smith (94).
