Wolves strong to the finish

Some solid throws, some zippy runs.

The Coupeville High School track and field squad put in a strong day of work Thursday in Mount Vernon, capturing four titles and setting 32 PR’s at an eight-team meet.

Leading the way for the Wolves were Logan Martin, who claimed top honors in the shot put and discus, Aidan Wilson, who ran away with the 800 crown, and the boys 4 x 100 relay squad.

That unit, made up of Sam Wynn, Reiley Araceley, Dominic Coffman, and Wilson, out-leaned La Conner to capture the title.

Coupeville also notched four second-place finishes, with Catherine Lhamon (1600), Ryanne Knoblich (high jump), the boys 4 x 400 relay team, and Coffman (high jump) pushing the top finishers.

Track powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian defended its home turf, sitting atop the leaderboard in both the boys and girls team standings, while the Wolf squads finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

CHS has two meets left in this pandemic-shortened season, with a trip to La Conner Wednesday, March 31, followed by the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

That finale, set for April 3, will be in Coupeville.

Same speed, new team

Mallory Kortuem

She’s official.

Coupeville High School grad Mallory Kortuem made her debut as a college athlete Saturday, competing for NCAA D-II Western Washington University.

The former Wolf ran at the Doris Heritage Track Festival at West Seattle Stadium, hitting the tape in the 200 in a crisp 28.75 seconds.

With the ongoing pandemic having shut down spring sports in 2020, Saturday marked the first time in 379 days that WWU track had competed.

Kortuem, who lost her senior track season at CHS, finished her run as a Wolf as one of the most-impressive track and field athletes to wear the red and black.

She claimed four state meet medals, including a 2nd place finish in the 400 as a junior, and joins Maya Toomey-Stout as the only Wolves to appear four times on the school record board.

Kortuem currently holds CHS records in the 400 (58.02) and pole vault (8-10), as well as being part of record-setting 4 x 100 (50.54) and 4 x 200 (1:46.13) relay squads.

The Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Famer, who was also a standout soccer player during her Coupeville days, is studying kinesiology at WWU.

Wolves back on track with seven titles

No rust.

There was a two-week gap between the first and second meets, but the Coupeville High School track and field team hasn’t lost a step.

Traveling to Concrete Thursday, the Wolves combined to claim seven first-place finishes at a Northwest 2B/1B League meet, including sweeping both of the boys relays.

Perennial state power Mount Vernon Christian claimed first in the team standings, sharing girls honors with Grace Academy.

Coupeville finished second on the boys side, and third on the girls.

The trip to Concrete was a late addition to the schedule, as La Conner was originally supposed to host.

Kudos to the Lions for stepping up and putting on a track meet — easily the most-complex of any high school athletic competition — with little advance warning.

Down on the field, Logan Martin led the way for the Wolves, claiming titles in the shot put and discus, while Aidan Wilson was tops in the long jump.

Carolyn Lhamon (shot put) and Ryanne Knoblich (high jump) conquered all challengers in their events, as well.

The Wolf boys relay teams featured Wilson, Reiley Araceley, and Sam Wynn in both races, with Dominic Coffman filling out the lineup in the 4 x 100 and Mitchell Hall taking his place in the 4 x 4.

Coupeville returns to action March 25, when it travels to Mount Vernon.

Let her fly (far, far away)

He’s closing the gap, fast.

Coupeville High School junior Logan Martin is chasing older brother Dalton, coming for his school record in the discus.

And now the margin between the two, which once stood at 40 feet, has been narrowed all the way down to eight feet.

Dalton’s record, set in 2016, stands at 161 feet, seven inches and was accomplished at the Olympic League Championships. Two weeks later, he claimed second-place at the state meet.

In 2019, Logan capped his freshman season by nailing a throw of 121-11 at districts, then had his sophomore campaign erased by the COVID shutdown.

Jump forward to 2021, and his first discus heave, two weeks ago in the season-opening Northwest 2B/1B League meet in Coupeville, landed at 141-02.

A great start, but Logan has since smashed that PR, launching a throw of 153-07 during a virtual meet this past week.

Now, he and his Wolf teammates return to live competition Thursday, when they travel to the wilds of Concrete for another league meet.

Hoskins makes college track debut

She’s official.

Coupeville grad Ja’Tarya Hoskins made her college track and field debut Saturday, competing for NCAA D-II Saint Martin’s University at the PLU Opener in Tacoma.

The former Wolf finished 9th in the 200, crossing the line in 28.86 seconds, which beats her high school PR.

The meet, the first Saint Martin’s has attended in a year thanks to the pandemic, also featured Seattle Pacific University, the University of Puget Sound, and host Pacific Lutheran University.

Hoskins, a freshman who is studying pre-law, is next set to compete March 20, when Saint Martin’s travels to Seattle Pacific.

During her days at CHS, she was a key part of two teams which went to state.

In their first year back as a competitive squad after a six-year break, the Wolf cheer squad claimed 3rd place at the big dance during her junior season.

She and her teammates then qualified for nationals the next year.

On the track oval, Hoskins teamed with Mallory Kortuem, Maya Toomey-Stout, and Lindsey Roberts to place 5th at state in the 4 x 100 relay.

The quartet hit the tape in 50.54 seconds, and they currently sit on the big board in the CHS gym as school record-holders.
