Jump keeps throwing arm limber

Does he get a day off? Not likely.

Does he want a day off? Probably not likely, either.

Coupeville High School sophomore Khanor Jump is staying busy as the latest track and field season unfolds, competing both for the Wolves and as a one-man wrecking crew.

Sunday, he went down to the Evergreen State College in Olympia to fling the hammer in an event which drew competitors from multiple schools.

Jump’s top throw went 100 feet, two inches, and he has broken triple digits each time out while participating in two of the three hammer series events held this spring.

His PR in the event is 117-02.

The hammer throw is not generally part of regular season meets in Washington state, so throwers have to follow their own path, with a season-long series which culminates in a state championship separate from the one offered by the WIAA.

Jump finished 22nd at the hammer throw state championships as a freshman, second-best for a 9th grader.

The freshmen shall lead the way.

We’re one week, and two meets, into a new track and field season, and currently 12 Coupeville High School athletes are ranked in the top 10 among all 2B competitors.

Or at least the ones whose coaches have recorded their numbers on athletic.net, the go-to place for all your track stat needs.

Leading the way are 9th graders Tamsin Ward and Cyrus Sparacio, who are among the leaders in three different categories.

Hot on their heels, with two appearances apiece, are sophomore Lillian Ketterling and senior Malachi Somes.

While a whole lot can, and will, likely change between now and the state meet in May, here’s where CHS athletes sit among all students from 2B schools through Mar. 23:

 

GIRLS:

Temps (slightly) rise, track stars soar

They’re in a groove now.

The second high school track and field meet of the season arrived Saturday, and it was a fairly big one as Coupeville hit the road to participate in the 25-team Rainier Icebreaker.

While far from home, the Wolves found strong competition, a smattering of top times and marks, and, lo and behold, even some blue skies.

“Beautiful weather at Rainier today,” said CHS coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting.

“Funny how nice 52 (degrees) with a little sun feels after dealing with the rain and 30-40-degree temps most of the season.

“We may have even got a little burnt.”

Shining brightly under the sun, the Wolves earned several top-five performances, with sophomore Wyatt Fitch-Marron claiming top team honors with a 2nd place showing in the high jump.

He was joined by fab frosh Tamsin Ward (3rd in the shot put and 5th in the high jump), Lillian Ketterling (5th in the pole vault), and the mixed 4 x 400 relay unit, which hit the tape in 4th place.

That co-ed crew was comprised of Olivia Hall, Brian Thompson, Ketterling, and Edmund Wilson.

Overall, the Rainier girls and Elma boys collected team titles, with Coupeville finishing 14th and 15th, respectively.

With two meets in the books, the Wolf coaches like what they’ve seen, and are anticipating many more highlights to come.

“We saw several PRs and strong performances (today),” Martin and Bitting said. “And we’re looking forward to continued growth over the next month.”

Next up for Coupeville, or at least part of the roster, is a road trip Saturday, Mar. 28 to the 4th annual Stanwood Frosh/Soph Invitational.

CHS grads light up college sports world

The Wolves are busy on the next level.

Coupeville grads Tate Wyman and Madison McMillan are both spending a chunk of their weekend playing college sports and excelling while doing it.

Wyman, a junior at Oregon Tech, competed in the Pacific Northwest Invite in Corvallis, Oregon Friday and Saturday, helping his team kick off the outdoor track and field season.

Ayden and Devon’s big bro set a PR in the 200, hitting the tape in 22.86 seconds, while soaring 20 feet, 2.50 inches in the long jump, and clocking a 16.17 in the 110 hurdles.

Meanwhile, McMillan, a freshman at Edmonds College, picked up two hits and scored twice Saturday as the Tritons softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Douglas College.

Edmonds claimed the opener 8-0, then won the nightcap 11-1 in a game mercy-ruled after five innings.

McMillan and Co. are 14-1 on the season and will carry a 14-game winning streak into action Sunday, when they host Skagit Valley College in another twin-bill.
