Wolf grads captivate college crowds

They’ve gone to a higher level but are still making headlines.

Three Coupeville High School grads pulled on college athletic uniforms Saturday, continuing to provide an inspiration to current Wolves.

From track meets to rowing regattas, here’s what they were up to:

 

Logan Martin:

Now a sophomore at Central Washington University, he was busy throwing things far away at the Oregon Preview in Eugene.

Martin opened with a strong sixth place finish in the hammer throw (out of 15 competitors) Friday.

His throw landed 173 feet, one inch away from where he let it go.

Saturday, Martin was back at it, launching the shot put 42-01.25 to claim 12th place.

Lucy Sandahl:

The former Wolf celebrated Senior Day with four fellow Seattle Pacific University rowing teammates at the Falcon Regatta.

Facing off with the University of Washington and the top two NCAA D-II teams — the University of Central Oklahoma and Cal Poly Humboldt — on the L.W. Ship Canal, the Falcons more than held their own.

Sandahl was the coxswain in two boats, guiding her 4+ boat to a win and her 8+ boat to a second-place finish.

Tate Wyman:

Now a freshman at Oregon Tech, he participated in his school’s first home meet in 12 years.

The event went down in Klamath Falls on a “spring” day that was a test of everyone’s soul.

Enduring wind, rain, hail, and cold temps, Wyman ran in both the 110 hurdles and on a 4 x 100 relay team.

Wolf grads soar at next level

All around the world, the Wolves were howling.

Four different Coupeville High School grads were in action at the next level this weekend, with action going down in three sports and on two continents.

What was happening:

 

Logan Martin:

Now a sophomore track and field star at Central Washington University, he claimed a pair of top-three finishes at the PLU Open in Tacoma.

Martin finished second in the hammer throw Friday, tossing the implement 176 feet, nine inches, then came back around Saturday to earn third in the shot put with a throw of 42-8.75.

 

Dominic Coffman:

The 2023 CHS grad is playing semi-pro football in Spain, and he rushed for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday as the Las Rozas Black Demons won 44-13.

That gives the former Wolf four scores across the past two games for a gridiron squad which is now 6-0 on the season.

 

Tate Wyman:

The Oregon Tech freshman ran in two track events Saturday at the Pacific Northwest Invite in Corvallis.

Wyman placed seventh in the 110 hurdles in 19.13 seconds, and 17th in the 200, where he set a PR with a time of 24.42.

 

Caleb Meyer:

The former Wolf saw his basketball career at Skagit Valley College end Saturday, with the Cardinals falling 79-77 to Tacoma in an overtime thriller in the semifinals of the Northwest Athletic Conference tourney.

SVC finished 26-6 as Meyer saw court time in 20 games during his sophomore campaign.

Warm weather, hot bat

The sun is in their rearview mirrors.

After opening the season with seven games in Florida, University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball players return to the likely chillier weather of home.

The Owls, led by Coupeville grad Joey Lippo, who is lashing the ball in his senior campaign, wrapped their road trip Friday with a 22-10 loss to Salem State University.

UMPI, which sits at 1-6, is off until Mar. 21, when it opens a four-game series with Fisher College in Boston.

While the Owls didn’t get as many wins as they might have liked in Florida, Lippo was a bright spot.

The former Wolf is hitting .355, with 11 hits, eight runs, three walks, and 10 RBI.

Anchoring the team from the leadoff spot, he’s pacing UMPI in both at-bats (31) and runs knocked in, while also playing nearly spotless defense while patrolling the outfield.

Lippo is wrapping up a four-year run with the Owls in which he has played both collegiate golf and baseball.

Skyy’s twin brother was a standout tennis, basketball, and baseball player during his days in Cow Town.

Lippo off to torrid start

His bat is on fire.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo has kicked off his senior season of college baseball with a bang, piling up stats across the first three games.

While the University of Maine at Presque Isle is still looking for its first win, the Owls leadoff hitter is getting the job done.

Lippo and company are in Auburndale, Florida, where they’ll play their first seven games at Lake Myrtle Park before heading off to Massachusetts and Maine for the remainder of the season.

Before leaving the Sunshine State, Presque Isle plays a doubleheader Wednesday, then single games Thursday and Friday.

The Owls fell 14-7 to Lakeland University Sunday in their opener, before dropping both parts of a doubleheader Monday against Principia College.

The Panthers won 6-5 and 14-10 to get to 5-5 on the season, while Presque Isle drops to 0-3.

Lippo went down swinging hard Monday, however, collecting four hits and seven RBI in the doubleheader.

Through three games, the former Coupeville diamond ace is hitting .417, with five hits, seven RBI, three runs, and three walks.

This is the final season for Lippo, who has played both golf and baseball during his time at UMPI.

Wolf back on the water

Her final season begins.

Coupeville grad Lucy Sandahl and her Seattle Pacific University rowing teammates made their season debut Saturday at the PLU Invitational at American Lake in Lakewood.

The Falcons endured a fair amount of wind rippling across the water as they squared off with Western Washington, the University of Puget Sound, Lewis & Clark, and event host Pacific Lutheran.

Sandahl was coxswain for SPU’s top boat, the varsity 8+ crew, which hit the line with a time of seven minutes, 13.39 seconds.

The Falcons also competed in a second 8+ race, as well as a pair of duels pitting four-women crews.

The wind got rough enough that all afternoon races were scrubbed.

Now it’s back to practice for Sandahl and her compatriots, with their next meet being their only home one of the season.

That arrives Saturday, Mar. 23, takes place on the L.W. Ship Canal, and is known as the Falcon Regatta.

Cal Poly Humboldt and the University of Central Oklahoma are slated to travel to Seattle for that shindig.

Lucy Sandahl, who is a senior at SPU, was a multi-sport athletic sensation back in her Coupeville days.

Sophie’s lil’ sis was a standout volleyball player known for her laser serves, while also excelling in numerous events as a track and field supernova.
