As CHS coach Cory Whitmore imparts wisdom, the line of players goes on forever.

Excitement ripples through the gym.

Spikers (l to r) Abby Mulholland, Zoe Trujillo and Payton Aparicio earned awards for their attitude on day one of skills camp.

The gym was packed.

Day one of a four-day volleyball skills camp attracted more than 50 spikers to the Coupeville High School gym Monday afternoon.

The camp, run by Wolf coach Cory Whitmore, is open to athletes headed into grades 7-12.

A similar two-day clinic for K-6 is set for later this month.

Three players walked away with hard-earned Gatorades Monday after being honored for their attitude, the first Covenant Awards handed out at the camp.

Taking home the refreshing honors were high school spikers Payton Aparicio and Zoe Trujillo and middle school ace Abby Mulholland.

81 days.

It’s both forever and just around the corner, and it’s the gap between today and the first game of the 2017-2018 school year.

Wolf football is first up, with a road game Sept. 1 at South Whidbey, with The Bucket on the line.

After that, boys tennis and volleyball hit the ground running Sept. 5, with girls soccer the last to debut Sept. 7.

With CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith on top of things, the schedules below are already (virtually) locked-in.

Now, of course, things can and will change over the next three months (hopefully not dates so much, but times can certainly shift).

So, treasure this list, pore over it, memorize it, laminate it and light candles around it, but also don’t forget to keep an eye on the following web sites as we get closer to fall:

Coupeville Schools — http://coupeville.tandem.co/

Olympic League — http://www.olympicleague.com/

CHS head baseball coach Chris Smith is taking on a second job at the school, as boys basketball JV coach. (Sylvia Hurlburt photo)

Chris Smith is going to pull double duty.

The popular Coupeville High School head baseball coach has been offered the assistant boys basketball job at the school, Athletic Director Willie Smith confirmed Sunday night.

The hire is not official until approved by the school board at its June 26 meeting.

As the new JV hoops guru, Chris Smith joins Brad Sherman, who was recently hired as the program’s head coach.

After working as a baseball assistant, Smith moved into the head coaching position early this spring when Marc Aparicio resigned.

He guided the Wolf hardball squad to a 7-6 mark, going a crisp 6-2 in Olympic League play.

A father of three star CHS three-sport athletes (2016 grad CJ, senior-to-be Hunter and sophomore-to-be Scout), Smith is a 1989 graduate of Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia.

He holds a BA in Exercise Science/Physical Therapy from Western Washington University and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Andrews University.

Smith also served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1989-1993.

Buy my book!!

Your bookshelf isn’t complete without a copy. (Book cover photo by Sylvia Hurlburt)

A little more than three cents a page.

That’s all it costs to own a permanent piece of Coupeville Sports history.

As we head towards the five-year anniversary of this blog, I’m jumping the gun by two months by publishing “Bow Down to Cow Town: Small Town Sports, Big Time Stories.”

It’s 294 pages (in handy 5 x 8 standard paperback book form) of big wins, tough losses and (somewhat) introspective looks at the athletes and coaches who have called Cow Town home from 2012-2017.

All for the low, low price of $9.95 on Amazon (there’s a permanent link on the top right of this blog and another one at the end of this article).

I’m not going to list everyone who appears in the book by name, as it’s a ton.

But there are big appearances from everyone from Jae LeVine to Lathom Kelley, Bob Rea to Kacie Kiel, Willie Smith to Sylvia Arnold and just about everyone else you can think about.

Every word written by me on a computer powered by three hamsters on a treadmill while camped out on the shores of Penn Cove.

Want to help keep me, and Coupeville Sports, going?

Buy a book, heck, buy a couple books.

One for yourself, one for grandma, one for the relatives in Pennsylvania, maybe even one to put under that wobbly table leg to get it to stay steady.

Most important thing? Buy it.

Cause every time you buy a copy, a cow gets its wings … and it’s a little easier for me to pay rent. So, there’s that, too.

Jae LeVine, up to shenanigans as usual.

Kailey Kellner (in bow tie) keeps a watchful eye on the paparazzi while her classmates enjoy a joke from the podium.

Grads (l to r) Kiara Burdge, Kaela Hollrigel and Kellner, still going strong.

Garrett Machen dreams of his bed.

Together, one last time.

One final run as a pack.

The Coupeville High School Class of 2017, all 71 of them, went out in style Friday night.

After graduating (capping a K-12 run in Cow Town for 19 of them), half the class stayed together for a grad night party in Seattle.

Ever-industrious paparazzi John Fisken was there for it all, and the photos above are courtesy him.
