CHS track stars among state’s best

Not a whole lot of movement.

Coupeville High School track and field got back at it this past weekend, snapping a two-week layoff with an appearance at a meet in Forks.

The Wolves, who have a home meet this Wednesday, followed by a trip to the Lil’ Norway Invitational Saturday, retained their spots on the statewide top 10 rankings, with just a little tweaking here and there.

CHS currently has four athletes sitting among the best in 2B.

GIRLS:

Discus — Reese Wilkinson (6th) 104-04.50

Pole Vault — Carly Burt (10th-tie) 7-00

 

BOYS:

High Jump — Nick Guay (3rd-tie) 6-00

Pole Vault — Cael Wilson (4th-tie) 11-00

East coast, West coast, her boat goes fast

She flew across the country, then soared across the water.

Coupeville grad Lucy Sandahl was busy directing traffic as a coxswain Sunday as the Seattle Pacific University 8+ boat competed in the prestigious Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

The Falcons squared off against top NCAA D-II teams on the Cooper River, claiming fourth place.

SPU also earned a third-place finish in the 4+ race.

The regatta attracted six of the top eight teams in D-II, led by top-ranked Central Oklahoma. Seattle Pacific sits at #3 in the most-recent coaches’ poll.

Sandahl and her rowers zipped across the 2,000-meter course in seven minutes, 7.95 seconds, finishing just two seconds out of second place.

Next up for Seattle Pacific is the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships April 27-28 on California’s Lake Natoma.

During her days in Coupeville, Sandahl was a two-sport star for the Wolves, playing volleyball and competing in track and field.

She is a senior at SPU.

One family, all the success

It was an action-packed weekend for the Helm family.

Dad Jerry, Central Whidbey’s Fire Chief, was busy revving his engine as a stock car racer at Evergreen Speedway, while mom Lindsey, Coupeville Elementary teacher extraordinaire, was off to Canada to kick some fanny.

She took daughters Finley and Scotlyn with her, and the trio brought home nine medals from a taekwondo tournament of champions in Surrey, British Columbia.

“Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat!”

The tourney marked Scotlyn’s first time competing internationally, and Finley’s debut in a black belt ring.

Lindsey earned gold medals in combat sparring, X-Treme weapons, and sparring, while Scotlyn copped first-place in weapons.

Overall, the trio amassed four golds, three silvers, and two bronzes.

All your medals will be ours.

Back in the USA, Jerry, racing for the second time this season, logged his fastest lap times as a driver, ultimately finishing sixth in the main event.

Afterwards, he paid tribute to his support crew.

“Another amazing night from my pit crew, Michael Matros and Philip Brotemarkle,” Jerry Helm said.

“They knocked it out of the park once again on getting the car set up to run with the best.”

The open road, she calls to me

Willie Smith would love it if gas prices came down right about now.

With Coupeville High School teams having eight of nine events on the road this coming week, the wheels on the busses will be goin’ round and round, prompting more than one fill-up.

That’ll keep the Wolf Athletic Director crunching the numbers and looking forward to the return of home games in the following weeks.

Three of four CHS teams spend their entire week away from Cow Town, with only track and field slated to be at home.

The throwers, runners, and jumpers welcome other teams to Whidbey Wednesday for the Coupeville Classic Invite, then head to North Kitsap Saturday for the Lil’ Norway Invitational.

Meanwhile, Wolf tennis goes to Friday Harbor Wednesday and University Prep Saturday, while CHS baseball hits Friday Harbor Tuesday and Mount Vernon Christian Friday.

Making the most road trips, Coupeville softball is off to Friday Harbor Tuesday, Blaine Friday, and Granite Falls Saturday.

As everyone preps snacks, gets their pillows fluffed, and prepares a play list for the time spent bumping along the backroads of America, a look at current win/loss records for sports which track that sort of thing.

Long track trek, stellar results

They came, they saw, they competed really well in the time they had.

The Coupeville High School track and field team put in five hours Saturday at the Forks Lion Club Invitational, then had to hightail it so as not to miss the ferry.

That kept the Wolves from vying in several events, with things such as the 200 and 4 x 400 relay falling by the wayside.

Still, even with their premature departure, the Wolves, who were in action for the first time since March 28, held up well in the team standings.

The CHS girls, repping a 2B school, claimed third, trailing just 1A Klahowya and 2A Olympic, while Coupeville’s boys earned fifth among eight teams.

Port Angeles, a 2A school, won the boys’ team title.

Overall, the Wolves claimed first-place in four events and set 48 PR’s, putting smiles on the faces of their tired coaches.

“Despite having to leave early, it was a good post-spring break meet,” said Bob Martin.

“Hard to believe we’re only 18 days away from our league championship!!!”

CHS returns to action next Wednesday, April 17, when it hosts the Coupeville Classic Invite. This time, no Wolf is going home early.
