Former Wolves light up OHHS court

Former Coupeville High School hoops coach Scott Fox sports a new purple and gold ensemble while gracing the Oak Harbor bench.

Once were Wolves, now are Wildcats.

Oak Harbor High School kicked off a new basketball season Saturday with “A Night with the Cats,” featuring various OHHS teams squaring off on the hardwood.

On the girl’s side of things, two participants have a Coupeville connection.

Sweet-shooting Lauren Marrs, coming off a stellar season on the soccer pitch, torched the nets in Cow Town back in her middle school days.

A proficient scorer for the Wolves, she’s back to lofting jumpers and remains a fan favorite.

Also reappearing on the sidelines is former Coupeville coach Scott Fox, now sporting purple and gold clothes.

The longtime hoops swami worked with both male and female players during his time at CHS.

Fox started with the Wolf boys’ program, then led the school’s varsity girls through two seasons of play before stepping down to focus on health issues.

And thus concludes our brief detour into Wildcat territory, home to the school which issued me a high school diploma.

There will be no rivalry games between Oak Harbor and Coupeville during the 2022-2023 season.

Having been KO’d by the 2B Wolves last season in a boy’s game, the 3A Wildcats constructed a schedule without a rematch this season.

Stone sizzles on overseas hoops circuit

It was a big bounce back.

Playing six days after taking a rare loss, Baerum and its American assassin, Makana Stone, unloaded on a hapless foe Saturday in Norway.

With Coupeville’s progeny going off for 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals, she and her teammates pounded winless Storm Ungdom 81-28 in a professional basketball bout.

The victory lifts Baerum to 5-2 on the season and keeps the squad in sole possession of second place in the seven-team Kvinneligaen.

Stone and Co., who trail just Ulriken (9-0) in the league standings, get right back at it Sunday with a game against Midtbyen (4-4).

Baerum spread out its offense Saturday, with four players netting double-digits scoring totals.

Abbey Hoff and Julie McCarthy banked in 17 points apiece, with Stone, who sank a three-ball as part of her effort, and Camilla Gjerstad both tallying 15.

On the season, Stone has racked up a team-best 135 points, 85 rebounds, seven assists, 15 steals, and three blocked shots.

This is the second season of pro ball for the former Wolf ace, who played in England as a rookie.

Hilborn new hardball head coach

Steve Hilborn is stepping up.

After several seasons as an assistant coach at Coupeville High School, plus a stint with the local Babe Ruth program, Matt and Scott’s dad is the new Wolf head baseball coach.

His hiring is on the agenda for Monday’s school board meeting.

The elder Hilborn follows in the footsteps of Will Thayer, who led the CHS hardball program for two seasons before moving to Las Vegas.

Hilborn inherits a team coming off of a Northwest 2B/1B League title.

While the Wolves lost a strong group of seniors to graduation, key returners should include Scott Hilborn, Jonathan Valenzuela, Chase Anderson, Peyton Caveness, and Cole White, among others.

Baseball gets back to action with the start of practice the final week of Feb. 2023.

The gym came alive.

Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball made its home debut Tuesday and wanderin’ photographer John Fisken was on hand to collect the first images of a new season.

Wolf cheer heads indoors

Is the gym ready for them?

Coupeville High School cheerleaders have left the football sideline and are headed indoors for basketball season, with 23 athletes listed on their roster.

That includes the addition of several male cheerleaders who have joined Wolf coach Jennifer Morrell’s team for the winter season.
