Hall, Green pace young runners

They stood tall at the Falls.

The Coupeville Middle School cross country program sent 25 runners to the line Thursday at a six-school meet in Granite Falls, with Olivia Hall and Beckett Green capturing team honors.

Both Wolves nabbed 8th place in the individual standings, while tangling with runners from powerhouses like King’s and Langley.

The 1.7-mile course tested the young Coupeville harriers, while still having a lot less hills than their most-recent meet.

The Wolves get back at it Friday, Oct. 7, when they compete at the Hole in the Wall Invitational at Lakewood High School.

CHS grad shoots, scores on golf course

The Wolf is hunting eagles.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo is pulling double duty at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, playing for the school’s baseball and golf squads.

His best performance as a college duffer came Thursday, when he topped the Owls scoring chart at the Mariner Invitational at Augusta, Maine.

Lippo carded an 88 on the 6,214-yard course, his best round at UMPI.

The Owls placed fifth in the team standings, with Thomas College holding off the field to claim the crown.

Lippo and Co. play twice this weekend, facing off with Husson University Saturday, before joining the SMCC Invitational Sunday.

The season wraps with the North Atlantic Conference Championships Oct. 8-9 in Waterville.

Wolf harriers fly down the trail

This time they got to run.

A week after the original event was postponed due to a lack of ferry service, the Coupeville High School cross country team finally made it to Orcas Island Wednesday.

While there, the Wolves faced off with Mount Vernon Christian and the host Vikings, acquitting themselves quite nicely.

CHS senior Mitchell Hall won the boys race, with his closest rival on the 5,000-meter course being teammate Carson Field.

Claire Mayne was Coupeville’s top female runner on the day, claiming third place.

The Wolves now have a gap on their schedule, not competing again until Saturday, Oct. 8.

That day they’re planning to join the hubbub at the 40th annual Hole in the Wall Cross Country Invitational at Lakewood High School.

Gridiron squad builds bright future

The young guns are ready for their close-ups.

First-year Coupeville High School football head coach Bennett Richter has eight freshmen on a 32-man roster this season.

Toss in two eighth graders, Davin Houston and Dylan Robinett, who are working with the team while they await the arrival of their high school gridiron eligibility, and it’s a strong group.

Five of those eight frosh have made their debut on the stat sheet already this season, led by Aiden O’Neill and Chase Anderson, who have each been involved in a touchdown celebration.

The size of the group is remarkable for a school which no longer has a middle school gridiron program and has to hope Coupeville kids travel up to Oak Harbor to participate in Whidbey’s only youth football program.

O’Neill is missing, as we already used his portrait after he snagged his debut TD catch, and Devinion Hill was apparently not part of the photo shoot from where these pics originated.

Ref shortage shuffles CHS football schedule

Are you ready for some Thursday Night Lights?

Due to a shortage of officials, Coupeville High School’s home football game with Bellingham has been bumped from Friday, Oct. 7 to Thursday, Oct. 6.

Kickoff for the non-conference tilt is still set for 7 PM.

The change potentially puts the gridiron game up against a home volleyball match between Coupeville and South Whidbey, with JV at 5:00 and varsity at 6:30.

CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith is working on a potential switch for the spiker rumble, however.
