Joey Lippo

It’s the cherry on top of the sundae.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo was honored Thursday, named as a First-Team All-League pick when North Atlantic Conference baseball coaches picked their all-stars.

Lippo, a sophomore at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, was honored for his play in the outfield, and was one of two Owls tabbed.

Junior first-baseman Timothy Burns was also a First-Team pick.

Lippo started all 35 games for UMPI this season, and led the Owls in at-bats (123), runs (31), triples (2), RBI (22), walks (14), and stolen bases (8).

Skyy Lippo’s twin brother was second on his squad in hits (39), batting average (.317), on-base percentage (.386) and home runs (1).

One more day to build the anticipation.

Thursday’s baseball battle royal between Coupeville and Friday Harbor — a one-game showdown in La Conner to decide which of the schools advance to the state tournament — has been bumped a day.

Mother Nature, as she has been all spring, is a pain in the tushie.

The game, now set for 3 PM Friday, still on that neutral field in La Conner, pits a 13-6 Wolf squad against a 14-2 Wolverine team.

Coupeville is the Northwest 2B/1B League champ, having finished 11-1 to Friday Harbor’s 10-1, but playoff seeding is determined only by the games between 2B schools.

Both teams swept two games from La Conner, while splitting their own season series.

Friday Harbor won 3-2 on its home field, while Coupeville returned the favor 11-8 on Whidbey.

The winner of the play-in game advances to the 16-team 2B state tourney, which kicks off May 21.

All the awards will be hers.

Coupeville grad Sarah Wright continues to haul in accolades, with her most-recent accomplishment being named as an All-Conference college softball player.

The former Wolf supernova, now a junior at Sewanee: The University of the South, was tabbed as a Second-Team pick by Southern Athletic Association coaches last week.

Tiger teammates Alice Charboneau and Zoe Crockett earned Honorable Mention.

The All-Conference teams were based on play against other SAA teams, and Wright racked up 10 RBI in 13 league games.

She had 11 hits in conference action, with a pair of doubles and a home run which still hasn’t come back down to Earth.

Wright, whose first two college softball seasons were disrupted by the pandemic, was one of three Tigers to start all 33 games this year.

She led Sewanee in at-bats (102), runs (15), and home runs (2), while finishing second in RBI (17), and third in hits (25), total bases (35), and doubles (4).

The former Coupeville Valedictorian is majoring in politics and has made both the SAA Academic Honor Roll and All-Sportsmanship team during her time in Tennessee.

Call them road warriors.

Surviving a trip to Lakewood Wednesday, the Coupeville Middle School track and field team thrived during a four-team meet.

The Wolves, facing off with Sultan, Northshore Christian Academy, and the meet hosts, captured three wins and 69 PR’s as action unfolded.

CMS 6th grader Lillian Ketterling, who claimed first-place in the 800, joined 8th graders Malachi Somes (1600) and Adrian Cunningham (long jump) in making it to the top of the podium.

Coupeville also nabbed nine second-place showings, with four of those runner-up performances coming in relay races.

Fresh off their strong performance, the Wolves return home, hosting their next meet May 18.

That event will bring South Whidbey, Granite Falls, and Northshore to town.

Wolf spikers like Jill Prince (left) and Maddie Georges have a chance to participate in a skills camp. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Never stop working.

Success in volleyball, like any sport, comes with work put in on the court — in season and out.

With that in mind, Coupeville High School spiker coaches are gearing up for their annual in-house skills camps.

The sessions are split between incoming students in K-6 and grades 7-12.

The younger players go June 4-5, with the older stars on the floor June 13-16.

Elementary school students will be in action from 9 AM to noon, with middle and high school players going from 4-6 PM.

Cost is $20 and $30, respectively, and each player who registers by May 20 will receive a camp t-shirt.
