Another week, another honor for Coupeville’s Makana Stone.

Like clockwork.

Every week, FocusHoops selects five female players from the National Basketball League in England and honors them for their on-court achievements.

Coupeville’s Makana Stone has been a regular presence on the weekly team — even being tabbed Player of the Week three times — and this time around, she’s right back in her comfort zone.

Despite playing just 22 minutes Saturday, thanks to Loughborough University annihilating winless BA London 76-42, the former Wolf managed to put up some nice stats on the hardwood.

While Stone normally stays on the floor for close to the full 40 minutes, with the Riders up 44 points at one point, coach Quintero Cano seized the opportunity to give his bench substantial playing time.

Coupeville’s progeny used her time well, however, dropping in 12 points, snatching a game-high eight rebounds, dishing out four assists, and making off with three steals.

Stone hit on 85% of her shots in the paint.

On the season, Loughborough is 9-3 overall, 9-1 with the former Cow Town resident anchoring its lineup.

Through her 10 games, Stone sits with 168 points, 155 rebounds, 24 assists, 34 steals, and five blocks.

One field, many angles.

Wolf mom Morgan White popped up here, then over there, as she worked her way around the diamond Friday, capturing the Wolf baseball squad hard at work.

How’d he get on base? A flawless bunt and some nimble running.

The scoreboard was poppin’, and so were the cameras.

As the Coupeville High School baseball team ran away with a pair of lopsided wins over visiting La Conner Friday afternoon, wanderin’ camera clicker John Fisken worked the fences.

While he was only with us for two innings or so, before Oak Harbor duty called him away, he gave us a collection of pics to remember him by.

It’s a strong start.

After a year-plus off because of the pandemic, plus a switch from 1A to 2B and a move to the Northwest League, Coupeville High School athletic teams have come out of the gate hot.

When you look at the three spring sports which tabulate win/loss records, the Wolves have already nabbed seven wins, with runner-ups Friday Harbor (4) and Darrington (3) on their heels.

La Conner, Mount Vernon Christian, Orcas Island, and Concrete are all still hunting their first victory.

It’s still early of course, but with COVID shortening each sports season this school year, we’re also already a chunk into the schedule.

After playing entirely at home to start the spring, Coupeville hits the road this coming week.

Baseball plays at Darrington Tuesday and Friday Harbor on Friday, while softball matches those games, then tosses in a trip to Concrete Saturday.

Meanwhile, Wolf girls tennis nabs the only home event of the week, hosting Friday Harbor Wednesday, with CHS track traveling to La Conner Thursday.

Where things stand through March 14:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
Friday Harbor 3-0 3-0
Darrington 1-0 1-0
Coupeville 2-1 2-1
Orcas Island 0-0 0-0
MV Christian 0-2 0-2
La Conner 0-3 0-3

Northwest League girls tennis:

School League Overall
Coupeville 2-0 2-0
Friday Harbor 0-2 0-2

Northwest League softball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 3-0 3-0
Darrington 2-0 2-0
Friday Harbor 1-2 1-2
Concrete 0-1 0-1
Orcas Island 0-1 0-1
La Conner 0-2 0-2

Wolf Nation is everywhere.

While Donavan Sellgren never attended Coupeville High School, he is a vital part of one of our town’s most-successful athletic families.

Mom Misty was a three-sport star at CHS (volleyball, basketball, softball), one of the best during my run as Sports Editor at the Whidbey News-Times.

Uncle Nick also shone brightly during his time as a Wolf, and actually still holds the school career record for sacks.

And then there’s grandpa Vinny, who gave Ron Bagby a run for the title of the Wolf football coach with the shortest shorts.

But we’re in 2021 now, and Donavan, who graduated from Arlington High School, is the Sellgren currently front and center in the sports world.

Saturday, he made his season debut on the gridiron with Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana.

The sophomore wide receiver came up big, teaming up with quarterback Drew Korf on a 95-yard touchdown pass, but the Battlin’ Bears were nipped 14-12 by six-time NAIA national champ Carroll College.

It’s the first of four games for Donavan and Co. during this pandemic-shortened spring football season.

When he’s not hauling in touchdown passes, Dawn and Vinny Sellgren’s grandson is majoring in Health and Human Performance: Exercise Science.
