Ashleigh Battaglia is going to be busy.

When she hits the ground running as a Coupeville High School freshman in the fall, she’ll be kicking off a year in which she plans to be involved with sports every season.

Battaglia will be a member of the fall CHS cheer team, hopes to continue with the squad through basketball season, then head outside in the spring to join older brother Chris on the Wolf track and field team.

Toss in school work and she’ll have plenty of things to juggle, something of which she’s well aware.

“My goals as a freshman this year are to be able to get through this year not having to worry about last minute assignments and spending time with my family so I can easily enjoy my hobbies outside of school,” Battaglia said.

While she’ll be busy, the chance to interact with her teammates more than makes up for it.

“I love being on a team,” Battaglia said. It makes me feel like I have another family outside of home with the people I can trust if I ever need anything.”

Eternally positive, she looks for the bright side of things, but knows she can look to her veteran teammates if she hits any low moments.

“Every time I fail, I try to get back up again and keep going,” Battaglia said. “I want to improve.

“I would like to work on my confidence,” she added. “Like in cheer, I have girls who I know will help me if I struggle or need help.”

Battaglia was a three-sport athlete at CMS (volleyball, basketball, track) and looks forward to following in the footsteps of her brother, who went to state in the high jump as a freshman this spring.

“Track, I like it because I get to try new things and I compete mostly with myself to try to improve as much as possible,” she said. “My brother has always had helpful advice on anything track-related.”

Battaglia, who enjoys sketching, singing and hanging out with friends and her little sister (“she’s coming to middle school ready to show off her enthusiasm for sports and anything fun”), draws big support from her entire family.

“My dad, Brian Rogers, has had a huge impact on my athletic experiences, he’s always had encouraging things to say,” she said.

“My mother, Amanda Rogers, has always taught me to stand tall and try my best in everything,” Battaglia added. “So I can always look back and be proud of what I accomplished.”

And so it begins.

A brand new middle school track season officially kicked off Wednesday, as Coupeville hopped over to Port Townsend for a three-team meet.

Bringing 42 athletes, the Wolves outnumbered their hosts from Blue Heron Middle School, who had 26, but fell way short of Stevens.

A large school that funnels students to 2A high school Port Angeles, Stevens had a whopping 119 athletes on site.

Even so, Coupeville dominated the day.

“We undoubtedly won the meet,” said CMS coach Bob Martin. “Our athletes swept many of the events; they’ve put in the work and it showed!”

With so many athletes involved, Martin and co-coach Elizabeth Bitting did extraordinary work keeping track of Coupeville’s stats.

Keep in mind, it’s the first meet, everything was topsy-turvy and a good chunk of these athletes are new to Coupeville Sports and try not to go bonkers if I flip some numbers or names here.

Ashleigh Battaglia (John Fisken photo)

Ashleigh Battaglia, who finished with six points on opening night last Thursday, looks for an opening in the defense. (John Fisken photos)

Battaglia

Battaglia flies after a runaway volleyball.

We’re going to do a first today.

We’re swinging down to the middle school level to pay tribute to one of the best and brightest at CMS as she celebrates a birthday.

Ashleigh Battaglia, lil’ sis of CHS football star Chris, beats her brother by a few days (his cake day is coming up in a week or so), so she gets the spotlight first.

Much like her brother, she plays a lot of sports and plays them all well.

At CMS Ashleigh has suited up in every season, whether playing volleyball, basketball (where she kicked off a new season with a strong opening game against Chimacum) or track and field.

Last year she was the sort of indispensable jack of all trades a track coach loves, competing in seven different events during her season.

Want someone to run the sprints, throw the shot put or discus, launch herself in the long jump or take a leg on a relay?

Ashleigh answered the call every time, always with a beaming smile.

From what I’ve seen over the past year and a half, Battaglia seems like a genuine bright spot for Wolf athletics.

A hard worker, a good teammate and a warrior who is not afraid to get in the thick of things and battle.

I look forward to seeing what she accomplishes in the years ahead, and I already know Coupeville is lucky to have Ashleigh and her family, who have always struck me as a genuinely nice bunch.

Happy birthday, Miss Battaglia! I hope you have a great cake day.
