Hardball squad doles out awards

Another season in the books.

The Coupeville High School baseball program put an official stamp on things Friday night with an awards banquet, doling out honors after a very-successful campaign.

The Wolf varsity went 11-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 13-7 overall, claiming a conference title and just barely missing out on a trip to state.

Meanwhile, Coupeville’s JV racked up three wins and a tie, as a roster which included several 8th graders showed great promise.

Offensive MVP — Scott Hilborn

Defensive MVP — Xavier Murdy and Hawthorne Wolfe

One final cheer for winter sports

Thus ends the winter awards season.

The Coupeville High School cheer squad handed out awards and letters Friday night, following on the heels of Wolf basketball teams and putting an exclamation point on things.

Samantha Streitler, the team’s lone senior, received the Wolf Award, while she and Hayley Fiedler were honored for their work as co-captains.

Other awards went to Lucy Crouch (Spirit Award), Hayley Thomas (Coaches Award), and 8th grader Avery Williams-Buchanan (Most Improved).

A final shot at awards glory for Wolf girls

And that’s a wrap.

The Coupeville High School girls basketball program brought the 2021-2022 season to an official end Friday with a season-ending awards banquet.

Coaches Megan Smith, Greg Turcott, Alex Evans, Cherie Smith, and Lark Gustafson handed out letters and certificates, providing tangible evidence of a season well-played.

The Wolf varsity girls finished third in the seven-team Northwest 2B/1B League, trailing just state powerhouses La Conner and Mount Vernon Christian, while the JV hoops stars showed rapid improvement as the season progressed.

When it came time for awards, players voted on four of five awards — Offensive and Defensive MVP, Most Improved, and Most Inspirational.

Their mentors made the decision on two Coaches Awards, which were given to players who made a big-time commitment.

“It was given to these players because they were always excited to be there,” Megan Smith said. “They worked hard no matter what, always wanted to improve.

“They were willing to do whatever was asked of them and were an all-around great person to be around.”

Hardwood honors rain down

First the hard work, now the hardware.

Coupeville High School basketball players and coaches capped off the program’s most-successful season in decades Monday, handing out letters and awards at a team banquet.

Dodging frequent Covid tests, and adapting to an ever-changing schedule, the Wolves soared.

Coupeville’s varsity finished 16-2, won its first league title since 2002, claimed a district crown for the first time since 1970, and advanced to state for the first time since 1988.

While the JV didn’t reach those same win totals, the Wolf young guns showed considerable promise and were competitive every time out.

Xavier Murdy headlined the awards banquet, taking home team MVP honors, while Caleb Meyer and Alex Murdy were honored as Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.

Grady Rickner closed out his prep hoops career by taking home the Hard Hat Player of the Year award.

That honor goes to a Wolf who “embodies the hard hat mentality,” said CHS head coach Brad Sherman. “Hard work, dedication to the little things, commitment to being a great teammate every day.”

Hawthorne Wolfe, a four-year varsity starter who finished with 800 career points, received “Mr. Basketball 2018-2022” honors.

“This recognition goes to an individual who showed an exceptional commitment to the Coupeville basketball program throughout their basketball career,” Sherman said.

“This is a person who is Coupeville basketball through and through.”

Hawthorne Wolfe finishes as the #14 scorer in the 105-year history of Coupeville boys basketball.

Xavier Murdy and Rickner were also honored for their work as varsity captains, while the duo joined Logan Martin, Miles Davidson, and Wolfe as four-year players.

At the JV level, Zane Oldenstadt (Hard Hat), Ryan Blouin (Offensive Player), and Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim (Defensive Player) were honored.

Oldenstadt and Nick Guay were noted for their work as JV captains, while David Somes was recognized for everything he did as team manager.

Zane Oldenstadt is a star today, and likely a star tomorrow.

Rounding out the awards, Sherman and assistant coaches Greg White, Hunter Smith, Randy Bottorff, and Arik Garthwaite also hailed a trio of behind-the-scenes stars.

“Courtney Pilgrim for her continued commitment and hard work for the team year in and year out,” Sherman said.

“Dan Verduzco, our custodian, for always making sure we have the best facilities anywhere and for the constant support and encouragement he gives to our athletes, and Phil Jump, our bus driver, for taking us to every corner of the state this season.”

Harriers cap awards season

Reiley Araceley was honored as Best Teammate.

It is done.

Fall sports came to an official end Wednesday, as the Coupeville High School cross country team closed out banquet season.

The Wolves and coach Paige Spangler honored their three state meet participants — Helen Strelow, Claire Mayne, and Mitchell Hall — while also acknowledging Strelow winning the Northwest 2B/1B League title.

Hall and Strelow were captains this season, while Reiley Araceley (Best Teammate) and Bryley Gilbert (Most Improved) also earned awards.

After a season full of individual and team success, Coupeville is set up well to keep its momentum going into season five of running the comeback trail as an in-school program.

There were no seniors on this fall’s team, and the Wolves can return 19 of 20 runners, with just foreign exchange student Svetlana Vanina guaranteed to depart.
