It’s an honor just to be nominated.

Or so says everyone as they wait with bated breath, hoping to be a winner.

Coupeville basketball fans have a stake in England’s Women’s National Basketball League awards season, which begins May 24.

That’s because Wolf grad Makana Stone is a nominee for Player of the Year, Team of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year.

The Loughborough University whirlwind has the third-best adjusted efficiency rating (43.9) of the 26 players up for Player of the Year.

She trails just Gonzaga signee Esther Little (55.5) and Harriet Welham (46.7), both of league champ Ipswich.

The top five vote getters in Player of the Year balloting will make up the WNBL Team of the Year.

Stone is also up for Defensive Player of the Year, one of 16 nominees in that category.

The former Wolf is also ranked #3 in that field, with her blocked shots plus steals (4.4 per game) trailing just Reading’s Sitota Gines Espinosa (5.9) and Little (5.6).

Loughbrough, which is 12-5 on the season, 12-3 with Stone in the lineup, faces off with Reading Saturday in the WNBL quarterfinals.

Other awards, none of which Stone is eligible for, include the British Team of the Year, the Young (U19) Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Best Streaming.

The daughter of Josh and Eileen Stone, and lil’ sister of Andre, Makana is a graduate of Whitman College, where she put together one of the best runs in the school’s distinguished history of women’s basketball.

Heading into the playoffs, she has 240 points, 215 rebounds, 32 assists, 54 steals, and eight blocks in a Loughborough uniform.

Forget about using a pencil. They can write her name in with a marker at this point.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone, tearing up the hardwood in jolly ol’ England, was tabbed Tuesday to the FocusHoops Team of the Week.

It’s the fourth time in six weeks the former Wolf has appeared on the list, with two Player of the Week honors already to her credit.

This time out, Flo Ward of Bristol earned top honors after a 28-point performance, but Stone was hot on her heels.

The American Assassin racked up a game-high 18 points, a team-best 13 rebounds, and four assists, hitting the game-winning free throw Saturday as Loughborough University toppled Nottingham Trent 71-70.

Stone has played in six games for the Riders, putting together a double-double each time out.

Loughborough heads to winter break with a 5-2 record, tied for second-place in the 12-team Women’s National Basketball League.

The Riders, who are 5-1 since Stone pulled on a jersey, sit a game back of Ipswich (6-1), who they beat on a last-second shot from Coupeville’s progeny.

On the season, the Whitman grad has 103 points, 95 rebounds, 13 assists, and 13 steals.

Stone is currently #2 in the WNBL in rebounding (15.8 a night), #3 in efficiency (159.0), #7 in scoring (17.2), and #8 in free throw percentage (79.3%).

When she’s not pursuing her hoop dreams, she’s busy chasing a Master’s in Exercise Physiology.

Two games, two awards.

Makana Stone’s hoops game is impressing the folks in England, as the former Wolf star continues to carve up the local competition.

The Coupeville High School grad, who is attending Loughborough University, has thrown down double-doubles in both of her games in a Riders uniform.

After an 18-point, 25-rebound debut, which earned her Player of the Week honors, Stone followed that up with a 17-point, 11-rebound performance in just 17 minutes of action against Worcester.

For that high-impact showing, FocusHoops named her Tuesday to its Women’s National Basketball League Team of the Week.

Stone joins Worcester’s Carolina Marques and Grace Brownell, as well as Sitota Gines Espinosa (Reading) and Isabel Bueriberi (Nottingham) on the squad.

In picking Stone, FocusHoops writer Darren Paul had the following to say:

“Her 17-11 double-double was highly impressive against the tough Worcester Wolves and on another day would have been enough to see her side victorious.

“The American continues to demonstrate the value of a star import and has brought an abundance of scoring and rebounding to the young Loughborough outfit, and we expect to see her leave her mark on the WNBL.”

Stone, who graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, where she finished as the #2 rebounder and #5 scorer in program history, is pursuing a Master’s in Exercise Physiology at Loughborough.

Through two games as a Rider, she’s collected 35 points, 36 rebounds, five assists, five steals, and a blocked shot.

She shoots and scores, one more time.

Former Coupeville soccer standout Erin Rosenkranz continues to win awards, but these days most of them come in the world of academics.

The CHS grad was honored Friday by Western Washington University, named as the school’s 2020 Outstanding Biochemistry Student.

The award is named for Professor Sea Bong Chang, who taught at Western from 1964-1972.

Rosenkranz, who competed in soccer and track and field for the Wolves, is working towards her Masters in Biochemistry.

During her high school days, Erin was a top-notch student and a stellar athlete, one who earned enshrinement in the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame.

She is joined in the digital shrine by mom Kerry (McCormick) Rosenkranz, a top CHS cross country runner in the ’80s, and dad Scott, one of the soccer coaches who fueled a boom in the sport on Whidbey Island.

Balancing two soccer teams, as she also played for the Whidbey Islanders select squad, Erin Rosenkranz was a First-Team All-League pick during her senior season at CHS.

She also took home the team MVP award that year.
