The gym is quiet, but the rankers are hard at work.

Even with Coupeville High School’s basketball teams on a holiday break, the Wolves can still make a splash on the internet.

Case in point – the undefeated CHS boys hoops squad landing at #6 among all 2B schools when Evans Rankings dropped its first set of numbers Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves (5-0) trail Okanogan (5-0), Chief Leschi (6-0), Ilwaco (7-0), Lake Roosevelt (6-0), and Rainier (6-1) at the moment, with 75% of the regular season yet to be played.

Coupeville’s Northwest 2B/1B League rivals La Conner (3-3) and Friday Harbor (2-4) sit at #35 and #48 on the 2B chart, out of 53 ranked teams.

NWL rivals Mount Vernon Christian (6-1), Orcas Island (2-4), Darrington (3-3), and Concrete (0-6) are at #9, #27, #37, and #49, respectively, among ranked teams playing 1B ball.

Evans Rankings, which is far superior to MaxPreps and the WIAA when it comes to ranking teams, is the work of Matthew Evans.

He’s a former writer and editor whose work has appeared in Rant Sports, Stoppage Time Soccer, and VAVEL USA.

Be part of building a strong basketball future for Central Whidbey.

The Coupeville Youth Basketball Association has had a high turnout of players, but now needs more coaches to keep things going.

The time commitment would be one practice per week, plus one game on Saturdays, and you’ll be working with players in K-5.

Prior coaching experience is not required.

“If you’ve never coached before and don’t consider yourself a basketball wizard… that’s OK!,” said Morgan White.

“We will be providing plenty of support, guidance, and direction to help along the way.”

They are the 21 images which best capture 2021.

Or, at least the ones which catch my attention the most today.

They’re presented in no particular order, and come from the cameras of eight different snappers.

There’s action, and reaction, and a whole lot of emotion.

So, basically, life.

This beautifully-refurbished old-school gym was a destination spot for the Wolves. Someone tell Willie Smith to get crackin’ on recreating it in Cow Town.

One big step into the future.

With a pandemic-altered season barely in the rearview mirror, Coupeville High School boys basketball quickly transitioned towards a 2021-2022 season which will arrive in mere months.

Wolf coaches and 20 players made the trip to Moscow, Idaho, where they took part in the Cloud 9 Sports – Gorilla Poet Team Camp from June 28-July 1.

CHS head coach Brad Sherman was able to send both a varsity and JV squad onto the floor, and felt time spent at the camp was invaluable.

“A great experience!,” he said. “We had a great turnout, and we grew as a team and got better against tough competition.”

Teams played eight games in a “simulation tournament,” where end-of-game scenarios were played out.

There were also practices, team meetings, a dunk contest, and a three-point shooting showdown.

Coupeville made a sizable impact there, with incoming senior Xavier Murdy singing the nets as he won the three-ball contest.

The camp also gave the Wolves a chance to integrate younger players, including several of whom haven’t played high school ball yet.

Wolf players who made the trip:

They’re outta here.

But first they stopped to get their diplomas, as the Coupeville High School Class of 2021 graduated Friday night.

The photos above and below, which capture a variety of Wolves as they celebrate their big moment, come to us courtesy Eileen Stone.
