It was an epic journey, but worth it.

Traveling more than 300 miles round trip, the Coupeville High School track and field squad joined 17 other schools at the Cashmere Invitational Saturday, and left its mark while there.

The Wolf boys, led by a win in the 400 from sophomore Danny Conlisk and second-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 from junior Jacob Smith, placed 5th.

Meanwhile, the CHS girls, who got a second-place finish from freshman Cassidy Moody in the high jump, claimed 9th overall.

While Coupeville didn’t take as many bodies along as it would have if it had just been a regular meet, the Wolves still saw 12 different athletes set PRs.

Conlisk was the only one to notch two personal records on the day, claiming PRs in both of his events, the 400 and 800.

His win in the 400, coming against a field of 23 other runners, came by .01 of a second (52.70 vs 52.71), as he out-leaned Nathan Berglund of Deer Park.

Cassidy Moody is one to watch.

The Coupeville High School freshman has thrown her name into state title contention in the past week, setting a PR in the high jump at Thursday’s home track meet.

Clearing an even five feet, she vaults all the way into a tie for the third-best performance by a 1A girl this spring, just four inches off state leader Sienna Swannack of Lakeside (Nine Mile).

Moody’s charge into the top 10 gives CHS eight athletes (five girls and three boys) who currently sit in the top 10 in at least one event among all 1A athletes this spring.

The Wolves narrowly miss out on having nine, as sophomore Danny Conlisk sits at #11 in the 400 and #12 in the 800.

Coupeville’s top 10 performances as of Sunday morning:

Girls:

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (3rd) 16.30

4 x 100 — Roberts, Mallory Kortuem, Maya Toomey-Stout, Lauren Grove (5th) 52.69

4 x 200 — Grove, Toomey-Stout, Kortuem, Roberts (6th) 1:51.51

High Jump — Cassidy Moody (3rd) 5-00

Boys:

200 — Jacob Smith (4th) 23.12

Long Jump — Jacob Martin (4th) 20-07

Cassidy Moody

Remember the name Cassidy Moody.

Why, you ask?

Because the quicksilver Coupeville High School freshman, who celebrates a birthday today, is headed for big things.

One of the best and brightest young stars in Cow Town, athletically gifted and serene of spirit, Moody seems to glide whenever she walks by.

A strong, gifted young woman with a light scoring touch on the basketball court, where she frequently torches foes, she’s also one of the most promising young track stars in Wolf Nation.

While competing at the middle school level Moody was a jack-of-all-trades, vying in numerous events.

She was a sprinter (100, 200), stretched it out to a full lap around the oval (400), did hurdles, long jump, high jump, even found time to be a relay runner.

And she did it all extremely well, grabbing victories in both the hurdles and high jump, with the latter coming in the league championship meet during her 8th grade season.

With the graduation of CHS track titans such as Makana Stone and Sylvia Hurlburt, Wolf coach Randy King will be looking to his young guns to step up as Coupeville debuts its sparkling new track.

My money is on Moody, who has the skill and carriage of a star about to be born.

Of course, take away all the sports stuff and you’re still left with an amazing young woman, a quiet, friendly, hard-working, whip-smart asset to our community.

Whether she’s giggling with close buddy Melia Welling while working the scorer’s table or draining jumpers, Cassidy brightens up every room she’s in.

Happy birthday, Miss Moody.

Never stop being awesome.

Cassidy Moody is like a sponge.

The three-sport athlete, who will enter Coupeville High School as a freshman in the fall, is always eager to pick up new advice on how she can fine-tune her game.

That, and her ability to work with her teammates, are particular strengths for a young woman who plans to play soccer and basketball and compete in track and field as a Wolf.

“I’m not afraid to ask for help,” Moody said. “I get along with most everyone.

“I like playing with other people as a team and having fun with everyone while we all get better.”

While she enjoys all of her sports (Moody played volleyball in middle school, since CMS doesn’t have a soccer program), she singles track out as being closest to her heart.

“My favorite is track because it’s like an individual sport where you compete by yourself,” she said. “Also because I love doing the high jump.”

As she moves up a rung in the prep sports world, Moody wants to focus on … focusing.

“I need to work on trying harder at practice and paying attention,” she said. “As an athlete I need to work on paying attention more, and during school I would like to improve my grades and listening.”

When she’s not competing, Moody enjoys sketching, playing the ukulele and singing.

She hails “Ice Age” as her favorite film, “Caraphernelia” by Pierce the Veil as her go-to song, and loves henna art, hanging out with friends and sleeping.

It’s those friends who have helped shape Moody’s life, and continue to do so.

“My friends have pushed me to become a better athlete, being the only major athlete in my family,” she said. “And my closest friends have a huge impact of who I became and who I’m becoming.”

Size doesn’t matter.

Despite being much smaller in numbers than most of its competition, the Coupeville Middle School track and field squads held up well Wednesday at the Olympic League meet.

The Wolves finished second in the boys team standings, trailing just Sequim, which feeds a 2A school, while the girls were third behind ginormous Stevens, which feeds 2A Port Angeles, and Sequim.

Forks, Blue Heron (Port Townsend) and Chimacum also competed in the six-team season finale.

When Coupeville boarded the bus for the trip home, six Wolves ascended the stairs as league champs.

Cassidy Moody (high jump), Ja’Tarya Hoskins (75 hurdles), Morgan Pease (800), Thane Peterson (discus), Matthew Kelley (high jump) and Sean Toomey-Stout (long jump) all ruled their events.
