They enjoyed Tacoma so much they’re going back.

Coupeville High School juniors William Nelson and Joey Lippo won two of three matches Thursday at the 1A West Central District tennis tourney, keeping their state dreams alive.

The Wolf duo and coach Ken Stange will return to the Sprinker Tennis Center Tuesday, Nov. 1 for one more match.

Lippo and Nelson will face Micha Wibowo and Jack Jorgenson of Charles Wright Academy to decide 2nd and 3rd place, with the winner punching their tickets to state.

The loser Tuesday might (and it’s a very big might) also advance, as high school tennis in Washington state is a complicated mess.

With some schools playing in the fall and others in the spring, state is not held until May 26-27 in Yakima.

Along with the delay, the WIAA also doesn’t release allocations for each district until the spring.

That means District 3, where Coupeville plays, won’t know if it gets two or three slots to state for months.

For now, the district champs (Dylan Sam and Raghav Agrawal of CWA) are definitely in, as are the winners Tuesday.

To get to that match, Lippo and Nelson had to knock off their own teammates, beating CHS seniors Joseph Wedekind and John McClarin for the first time this season.

The older duo had been Coupeville’s #1 doubles team for two seasons.

The Wolves were strongly represented at districts, with eight players. Charles Wright had six, Klahowya four and Cascade Christian and Vashon Island three apiece.

It was the final tourney for Coupeville seniors Wedekind, McClarin, Jimmy Myers and Grey Rische.

MaxPreps likes Lauren Grove.

Like really likes.

The web site, which is devoted to being a national clearing house for prep stats and results (some weeks more competently than others…) has tabbed the CHS senior goalie as one of its state soccer players of the week for the second time this fall.

Grove was honored for her play during the week of Oct. 17-23, when the Wolf booters played three games, two against league-leading Klahowya and one against Port Townsend.

With the state-title-contending Eagles peppering her in particular, Grove made 45 saves over the course of the three games.

To see her name on the great, wide internet, and read more about the award, pop over to:

The furious five.

It was their night and they responded.

After being celebrated for their accomplishments Tuesday night, eight Coupeville High School seniors — three spikers and five booters — went out and led their teams to big wins.

It was the final regular season home game for Ally Roberts, Valen Trujillo, May Rose, Bree Daigneault, Megan DePorter, Tiffany Briscoe, Lauren Grove and Fanny Duprelle.

Of course, before the butt-whuppin’ of Chimacum began, the Class of 2017 athletes paused for the ritual taking of photos, which you can see above.

This could be a record-breaking season.

With two games left on the schedule, a pair of Coupeville High School football players are making bids to put their names on the program’s all-time record board.

Junior QB Hunter Downes and junior receiver Hunter Smith already tied CHS single-game records for touchdowns thrown and caught in a single game.

That came when Downes riddled Bellevue Christian for four scoring strikes, three of which went to Smith.

Now, Smith sits one snag away from tying Josh Bayne’s season record of 10 touchdown receptions, while also finding himself just 143 yards shy of Chad Gale’s mark (844 yards in 1987) for receiving yards in a single campaign.

When it comes to career marks, Smith sits 225 yards and six touchdowns off of Gale’s records (1,345 yards and 17 TD’s).

Downes is a little further away from his goals, but with a strong finish could make runs at Ian Smith’s single-season mark of 1,848 passing yards and Joel Walstad’s 18 touchdown passes in a year.

The Wolf gunslinger sits at 1,201 yards and 13 touchdowns and Friday’s foe, Chimacum, has the second-worst scoring defense in the Olympic/Nisqually League.

Cascade Christian, Coupeville’s final rival Nov. 4, is #1 in every defensive stat, however.

While the Hunter to Hunter passing attack is making a run at history, they are not the only Wolves putting up strong stats this season.

Here’s a look at where the whole CHS roster stands through week #8 on offense and defense, according to numbers posted on MaxPreps by Wolf coaches.

Complete kicking/kick-returning stats aren’t available at the moment, but are expected to be back in the mix by the end of the season, said CHS coach Jon Atkins.

Melia Welling (John Fisken photo)

Freshman Melia Welling made a one-handed save Tuesday, one of a ton of dazzling plays pulled off by a red-hot JV volleyball squad. (John Fisken photo)

At this point, the best you can hope for is just to not be hurt.

Face off with the Coupeville High School JV spikers and you will lose — that is pretty much set in stone — so, if you can leave the court with all your body parts in place, winner, winner, chicken dinner for you.

After being thrashed within an inch of their lives Tuesday night, Chimacum’s players had a hundred-yard stare firmly in place as they congratulated the triumphant Wolves.

The score was a tidy 25-14, 25-13, 25-7 and it wasn’t even remotely close, to be honest.

The win, the eighth straight for Wolf JV coach Kristin Bridges and her rampaging squad, lifts them to 7-0 in 1A Olympic League play, 10-2 overall.

Coupeville’s young guns have two matches left, road affairs Thursday at Klahowya and Saturday at Port Townsend.

Win both and they tie Amy King’s 2014-2015 CHS girls’ basketball squad, which also went 9-0 in league, as the best JV team in memory.

Even if they don’t get to ultimate perfection (but you’d be a fool to bet against them), these Wolves are a talented batch of fresh-faced warriors.

With 10 freshmen on a 13-player roster, Coupeville’s JV is considerably younger than Chimacum’s, which boasts six sophomores.

Talent trumps age, however.

From Raven Vick unleashing a serve that kicked off a Cowboy’s face for a point to Melia Welling making a sensational, one-armed save to Willow Vick launching a cannon shot of a spike down the line for a winner, everyone on the roster was humming.

Coupeville was firing on all cylinders at the service stripe, led by Scout Smith, who ran off nine consecutive points on her serve at one point.

Overall, she recorded 15 points on her serve, while Lucy Sandahl peppered Chimacum for 11 and Raven Vick kept the Cowboys jumping as she piled up eight winners.

Raven Vick closed out both the first and third sets with aces, while Willow Vick hit on back-to-back aces in the second set, including one that, like her sister’s earlier serve, shot up and smacked a Cowboy receiver in the face.

That sting was something virtually every Wolf foe has felt this season.

My advice? Better get used to it.
