Wolf grad swinging a big bat

The stats are there, just not the wins.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo continues to pile up numbers while playing baseball for the University of Maine at Presque Isle, though the Owls still need to work on improving their win/loss record.

UMPI was swept in a four-game weekend series against Fisher College, dropping doubleheaders Friday and Saturday to run its season mark to 2-13.

Lippo went down fighting, however, racking up six hits, three runs, two walks, and an RBI while starting all four games.

The former Wolf tops the Owls in runs (14), hits (19), RBI (8), walks (8), and batting average (.404) this season, and is tied for #1 in triples (1) and home runs (1).

He’s second in on-base percentage (.474) and slugging percentage (.553).

Lippo, who was a three-sport athlete during his high school playing days, is a sophomore at UMPI.

Stone solid, Riders fall late

The fourth quarter stung.

After controlling the game for the first 30 minutes Sunday, the Leicester Riders couldn’t get a shot to drop in the final frame and fell 83-67 to the visiting Sheffield Hatters.

The Women’s British Basketball League loss, which came despite a solid performance from Coupeville grad Makana Stone, knocks the Riders down to 11-6 in conference play, 15-8 overall.

Sunday’s tilt was a matchup between the #3 and #4 teams in the 13-team WBBL, with #4 jumping out to a 25-17 lead after one quarter of play.

Sheffield chipped away at the deficit, but Leicester still clung to a 41-35 lead at the half, then a 59-55 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately for the Riders, that was where their shooting touch abandoned them, allowing the Hatters to close on a 28-8 surge to claim the come-from-behind victory.

Stone, playing a hair under 33 minutes after starting, filled the stat sheet up with seven points, a game-high nine rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.

Brooklyn Mcalear paced the Riders with 14 points, while Sheffield offered up the wham-bam combo of Georgia Gayle and Ebony Horton, who went off for 21 and 20, respectively.

As her first season of pro basketball unwinds, Stone has racked up 182 points, 135 rebounds, 30 assists, 21 steals, and two blocks.

Leicester returns to action next Sunday, Apr. 3, when it squares off with the Essex Rebels.

The Riders have six regular season games remaining on the schedule, with the top eight WBBL teams advancing to the playoffs after that.

Fight for your right (to be in first place)

We’re starting to see some movement.

As we work our way towards the end of March, Northwest 2B/1B League teams are ramping up and beginning to play more conference tilts, accounting for some jockeying in the standings.

If weather permits, the week ahead will keep that trend going.

Coupeville High School baseball has four games in four days — all NWL bouts — hosting Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday and Darrington Wednesday.

After that, the Wolves head to Friday Harbor to face their biggest hardball rival in a Friday afternoon doubleheader.

Meanwhile, the CHS softball squad hosts Darrington, then plays its own twin-bill on Friday Harbor, while Wolf girls tennis travels to Oak Harbor Friday for a non-conference match-up.

Blazing bats, valiant victory

The bats were booming.

South Whidbey whacked back-to-back home runs Saturday, but the Coupeville High School varsity softball squad responded with a barrage of base-knocks.

Rapping out 20 hits, including a tater of their own, the Wolves held off their Island rivals, winning 15-5 on the road at Langley.

The non-conference victory gives CHS a home-and-away season sweep of the Falcons, and lifts Coupeville to 3-1 on the season.

Saturday’s tilt was a game the Wolves led from start to finish, but also one that they didn’t fully put away until the day’s final two innings.

Up 6-2 through five frames, Coupeville pushed three runs across in the sixth, then slapped an exclamation point on things with a six-run surge in the seventh inning.

That capped a game in which the Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play.

Pushing its advantage out to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Coupeville was cruising on both sides of the ball.

Until Chanel Sterba and Morgan Batchelor broke through with consecutive longballs.

If she was ruffled, Wolf hurler Izzy Wells never showed it, promptly setting the next six Falcons down on strikeouts.

The senior flame thrower recorded a season-best 17 K’s on the afternoon, requiring her teammates to only record four outs on their own.

With the game still close, Coupeville broke things open in the late going.

The sixth-inning rally started with Wolf frosh Mia Farris getting plunked by a wayward pitch, followed by a thunderous triple off the bat of senior Audrianna Shaw.

From there, a two-bagger from Savina Wells — which narrowly missed being a home run — and singles by Madison McMillan and Gwen Gustafson kept the good times going.

Things really got fun in the seventh, however, with Coupeville raining down eight hits in the frame, including Allie Lucero tagging a moon shot to join the exclusive homer-hittin’ society.

Doubles from Izzy Wells, Farris, and Taylor Brotemarkle didn’t travel quite as far, but also dealt severe damage to South Whidbey’s hopes.

“Late in the game we finally started hitting our stride offensively and got some runs to put the distance on them and put the game away,” said CHS coach Kevin McGranahan.

“We had some good hits when we were being aggressive.”
