Pitch pics to ponder and peruse

The day was grey, but the action was bright.

Playing under overcast skies Saturday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer team gave highly-ranked Providence Classical Christian plenty to deal with.

Cruising along the sidelines, camera at the ready, was John Fisken, who delivers the pics seen above and below.

Race for top spot heats up

Coupeville football had an unexpected week off after injuries forced it to cancel a non-conference game.

Things are starting to drop into place.

The further we get into the fall sports season, the more the frontrunners become clear.

Defending Northwest 2B/1B League champs La Conner (volleyball), Orcas Island (boys soccer), and Mount Vernon Christian (girls soccer) are all back in the lead, while Friday Harbor (football) is rebounding nicely after losing a season to Covid.

While it doesn’t sit in first-place in any sport, Coupeville is solid, currently second-best in volleyball and football.

Originally it seemed like Wolf girls soccer was also in second, but it turns out a score was misreported for the Friday Harbor vs. La Conner game, momentarily bumping CHS down a rung.

That could change this coming week, however, as the Coupeville boosters host Friday Harbor Tuesday.

Toss in home games against La Conner Thursday and non-conference foe Sultan Saturday (that’s Senior Night), and the Wolves have a busy week — and no bus rides.

Boys soccer and football only have a single game apiece, with both teams hitting the road Friday.

The booters are off to Lopez Island, while the gridiron giants travel to La Conner — if both the Wolves and Braves football teams have enough healthy players after both teams cancelled games this past week.

Coupeville’s cross country team doesn’t compete again until the league championships Oct. 21, but volleyball will be busy, with a pair of matches.

The Wolf spikers travel to Orcas Tuesday, where they will attempt to cement their hold on second-place, before hosting Darrington Thursday.

Stone a beast on the boards

Into every hoops career, a few losses must fall.

Despite Coupeville’s Makana Stone delivering her best rebounding performance as a pro, the Leicester Riders basketball squad suffered its first loss of the season Sunday.

Facing off with the also-undefeated London Lions, the Riders fell 85-53 on the road in Women’s British Basketball League action, evening their regular-season record at 1-1.

Counting a string of wins in the season-opening WBBL Cup, Leicester is 4-1 overall.

Stone, coming off the bench to play 34.5 minutes — third-most of any Riders player Sunday — hauled in 12 rebounds, her best showing in a Leicester uniform.

The former Wolf star also tallied two points, two assists, and a steal.

Chelsea Jennings and Brooklynn Mcalear paced Leicester with 16 and 13 points, respectively, while London’s Holly Winterburn led all scorers with a game-high 21.

The Riders got in a hole early, trailing 22-16 after one quarter of play, and were never able to catch back up with the Lions.

A 44-33 deficit at the half was slightly reduced to 57-48 heading into the fourth, but London proved a tough foe to topple down the stretch.

Closing the game with a 28-5 run in the final frame, the Lions made the game appear to be more of a blow-out than it truly was.

In her debut professional season Stone has racked up 28 points, 41 rebounds, eight assists, and two steals across her first five games.

She and her Leicester teammates return to action next Sunday, Oct. 17, when they play the Sheffield Hatters.

Fear no one, fight ’em all

Not all losses are the same.

Yes, it’s true the Coupeville High School boys soccer team fell 3-1 to visiting Providence Classical Christian Saturday afternoon at Mickey Clark Field.

The loss, the second-straight for the Wolf booters, drops them to 3-6 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, with six games left to play.

But much like in Coupeville’s 2-1 defeat Thursday against Mount Vernon Christian, the final score up on the big board doesn’t tell the whole story.

Coupeville, which almost lost its boys soccer program last season, played two of the best teams in its league in a 48-hour period, and more than held its own.

Both of the private schools boast a considerable amount of travel ball vets, while the Wolves, who have rebuilt their roster to 19 booters, don’t have that same level of experience.

But what CHS does have is a batch of tough, never-say-die hustlers who are jelling as a team and taking huge leaps and bounds as individuals, and as a group, each time on the pitch.

“Great game today. Awesome play by absolutely everyone!,” said elated Coupeville coach Robert Wood.

Trailing 2-0 to PCC at the half, and playing a team with just a single loss on its record to defending NWL champs Orcas Island, the Wolves rebounded after the break.

Miguel Puente notched his second goal of the season in the game’s 50th minute to pull Coupeville within one.

“Nick (Guay), Alex (Murdy), and Xavier (Murdy) all just being tenacious on the back line … then Miguel to clean it up nicely,” Wood said.

PCC showed off their chops with an absolutely-gorgeous goal from 35 yards out, with the ball smacking gracefully into the upper corner of the net, to provide the final margin.

“Rather pro, if you ask me,” Wood said of the final tally.

“All in all … awesome to hold them (a premier-stacked team) at 2-1 until extra time.”

But while the effort was impressive, and the battle intense, the best thing might be that the young, still-developing Wolves exited the field wanting more.

“Kids are pissed though,” Wood said. “Because they know how good they can be.”

She’s droppin’ kills and takin’ names

Chelly is still crunchin’ the volleyball.

Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott offered up another strong performance Saturday, racking up nine kills, seven digs, and a team-high three service aces during a tense four-set thriller.

Unfortunately, her heroics were not enough to save Medaille College, which fell 26-24, 25-21, 25-27, 25-15 to visiting La Roche University.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 1-2 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, 4-10 overall.

Medaille gets back at it Tuesday, Oct. 12, when it hosts Alfred State College in another AMCC tilt.

Along with Prescott’s all-around performance, the Mavericks also got strong work from Halle Bogas (13 kills), Haley Kennedy (34 assists), and Cierra Tripp (19 digs).

Prescott has been rock-solid in her freshman year in Buffalo, starting all 14 of her team’s matches and playing in all 45 sets.

The former Wolf has 73 kills, 108 digs, 13 aces, eight assists, one solo block, and six block assists, while scoring 90 points.

She’s #2 on her team in digs, and #3 in kills, aces, and points.
