They’re not yet at full force.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad opened a new season Tuesday with a limited roster, yet still put up a good fight.

While the Wolves fell 4-0 at Mount Vernon Christian, second-year CHS head coach Robert Wood came away pleased with some of what he saw.

“Pretty good play considering the novice team, only two subs, and another five on the bench waiting for eligibility,” he said.

Thanks to a quirk in the schedule, Coupeville has plenty of time to get everyone on the roster ready before its next game.

The original home opener set for this Friday was cancelled when Cedar Park Christian begged off due to a lack of players.

That means the Wolves don’t play again until Sept. 17, when they host defending Northwest 2B/1B League champ Orcas Island.

After that, the games start coming much-quicker, with CHS currently sitting with a 15-game schedule.

Or, 16 if CPC reschedules.

Tuesday, Coupeville split time in net between junior Aidan Wilson, who patrolled the goal in the first half, and freshman Mason Butler, who got the call after halftime.

Both Wolf goalies surrendered a pair of scores.

Wood praised the work put in by his active players, with hard-charging senior Xavier Murdy “running himself into the ground” while covering every inch of the field.

The Wolf coach also offered “special consideration to Cameron Epp and Nick Guay” for stepping up and claiming the center back spots formerly held by now-graduated stars Owen Barenburg and Sam Wynn.

With plenty of time between games one and two, Wood is ready to get back to the practice field with his young, relatively-inexperienced team.

“(We’ve got) 999 things to work on,” he said. “Orcas is next week … time to practice and get more players.”

Sean Toomey-Stout (30) has traded Coupeville’s red and black for University of Washington purple and gold. (Chelle Herbruger photos)

He’s a Dawg.

Sean Toomey-Stout’s journey from Coupeville athletic sensation to being the future of University of Washington football continues.

Saturday brought the U-Dub season opener, and while a loss to Montana put a dampener on things in general, the mere sight of The Torpedo on the sidelines is enough to send a thrill through Cow Town fans.

Freshman Katie Marti had an impressive debut. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

They’re a work in progress.

The Coupeville High School volleyball squads opened play Saturday with an appearance at the Oak Harbor Jamboree, and the result was a mixed bag.

The Wolf varsity, missing several players who are going through Covid quarantine procedures, dropped all six sets it played, but picked up valuable experience for younger players who made the jump up to the main team.

Meanwhile, the Coupeville JV was on fire, winning five of six sets.

Varsity:

While the 2B Wolves fell 3-0 to both 3A Oak Harbor and 1A South Whidbey, younger players picked up a chance to jump straight into the fire.

“We played with a very-thin group, but the amount of playing time and experience should really benefit us down the road,” said coach Cory Whitmore.

“I’m proud of each of the girls tonight for various reasons, whether it be for stepping up their leadership roles, adapting to playing next to newer teammates, playing a completely new position and/or playing a full six rotations where they had not previously done so.”

As a team, the Wolves were strong at the service line, something Whitmore has been having his team work on.

“I thought that our serving remained very consistent throughout the day,” he said. “That was a concern of ours during the first week of practices; however, we focused on it leading into the jamboree and it paid off.”

Whitmore praised the performance of freshman Katie Marti, who had to immediately step into a crucial role for the team.

“I do want to give a particular shoutout to Katie,” he said. “Having only recently stepped into a setting position, she learned the complicated rotations for a 5-1, and played all six sets, all six rotations for her very first outing in high school ball.

“This would be a lot to ask of any freshman and I thought she did a wonderful job.”

With Coupeville’s first regular season matches just days away, Whitmore and his spikers will get right back at it in practice.

“As a team, we have plenty to work on when getting back from the long weekend,” he said. “But this group has already shown a natural ability to learn at an accelerated rate, and so I’m looking forward to pushing them forward.

JV:

“It was such a great day for the JV girls!,” said coach Ashley Menges.

“They definitely make my job easy. They made a lot of adjustments throughout the day only having seven girls,” she added. “It was a lot of playing time and very good experience for them to start the season!

“Very excited for what’s to come for these girls!”

A new season dawns.

Playing hurry-up, then wait, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team kicked off the fall with an appearance Saturday at the Oak Harbor Jamboree.

Now, after playing two mini-games, the Wolves head back to practice, with their first regular-season game not until Sept. 16.

That match-up will be a home contest against Northwest 2B/1B League rival La Conner and will signal the real beginning of a 13-game season.

Saturday, Coupeville had a chance to face two opponents from larger schools, falling to 3A Oak Harbor and drawing with 1A Meridian.

“We started the first game with some first-game jitters, and a bit of a sleepy approach,” CHS coach Kyle Nelson said. “But we woke up for the second game.

“Really just a great opportunity to get out and play some soccer against some tough opponents in the early season.”
