Conlisk tears up college track

Three meets in, and he’s getting faster.

Coupeville High School grad Danny Conlisk, who’s now a freshman at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, continues to tear up the track during his first collegiate season.

Saturday, Conlisk and his Hardrocker teammates were in Spearfish at Black Hills State University for the Dave Little Invitational.

While there, the former Wolf ran in the 200 and the 4 x 400, setting a college PR in his solo event.

Conlisk finished 7th in the 200, hitting the line in 24.03 seconds.

He also ran the second leg on an all-freshman relay unit which claimed 4th place in the day’s prime team-up.

The Hardrockers were competing against five other schools Saturday, with MSU Billings, Rocky Mountain College, Chadron State, and Dickinson State joining SDSM&T and the meet hosts.

Conlisk and Co. return to the same track next Saturday, February 1 for the Myrle Hanson Memorial Open.

During his time in Coupeville, Conlisk was a two-time state champ, winning titles in the 200 and 400 as a senior.

He holds CHS records in the 100, 200, and 400.

Heart and desire, just not a win

Toss out the first quarter and it was a thriller.

After a cold start Friday in Bothell, the Coupeville High School varsity boys basketball team played strongly across the game’s final 24 minutes.

Unfortunately, the Wolves could never crawl their way back from a 21-point deficit at the first break, and fell 69-45 to host Cedar Park Christian.

The loss drops Coupeville to 1-5 in North Sound Conference action, 4-10 overall.

CHS will get a quick chance to bounce back, as it caps a busy week with a home non-conference tilt with Port Townsend (3-10) Saturday.

Tip-off is 4:30 for JV, 6:00 for varsity.

Friday’s game was a marked improvement for the Wolves, who lost 87-44 to the same Cedar Park squad four days ago.

It didn’t start out that way, as Coupeville fell behind 26-5 at the first break, but things got much better from there on out.

The Wolves outscored the hot-shooting Eagles 15-11 in the second quarter, with Hawthorne Wolfe leading the way with five points in the frame.

The sophomore sniper got plenty of help in the quarter, as seniors Sean Toomey-Stout and Koa Davison added four points apiece.

While the Wolves couldn’t get the lead down much more, they did hang tough with CPC, being outscored just 43-40 across the final three quarters.

Wolfe and fellow sophomore Xavier Murdy each pumped in 10 points to spark the offense, while Toomey-Stout banked home nine.

Davison and Mason Grove added six apiece, with Ulrik Wells and Jacobi Pilgrim both netting a bucket.

It was the first appearance for Wells in several games, as the Wolf big man has been recuperating from illness.

Gavin Knoblich, Jean Lund-Olsen, and Jered Brown also saw floor time for Brad Sherman’s squad.

Coupeville’s top two scorers on the season, Wolfe and Grove, continue to work their way up the Matterhorn that is the CHS boys basketball career scoring chart.

Both gunners passed four more former Wolves with their scoring efforts Friday, as Wolfe, who has 345 points, rose from #76 all-time to a tie with Timm Orsborn for #71.

He slid by Mike Vaughan (337), Kevin Faris (339), Byron Fellstrom (340), and Robin Larson (342).

Grove, who sits with 327 points, is hot on Wolfe’s trail, and jumps from #85 to #81, passing David Ford (323), Harold Buckner (323), Ian Smith (324), and Utz Conard (326) on a chart which covers 103 seasons.

 

JV falls:

“They wanted revenge and got it.”

It was a rough night for the Wolf JV boys, who fell 66-38 to a CPC squad they had beaten earlier in the week.

The loss drops Coupeville’s young guns to 4-2 in North Sound Conference action, 8-5 overall.

Logan Martin led the way for the Wolves, banging home a team-high 11 points, while Daniel Olson chipped in with nine.

Alex Jimenez (7), Grady Rickner (4), Cody Roberts (3), Miles Davidson (2), and TJ Rickner (2) also scored for Chris Smith’s squad.

 

C-Team cancels:

Coupeville was originally set to play a third game, but had to opt out due to a lack of players.

Patrick Upchurch’s team returns to action Saturday with a road doubleheader in Granite Falls, with games against the host Tigers and Sultan.

The Wolf roster will be supplemented with several players plucked from the JV squad.

Sizzlin’ start, cold finish

They won the battle, and lost the war.

Shutting down the reigning league MVP on her home floor Friday night, the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball squad had a prime chance to pull off an upset.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, their own offense went into the deep freezer after a decent first quarter, and they eventually fell 35-21 at Cedar Park Christian.

The loss drops Coupeville to 9-4 overall, 4-2 in North Sound Conference action — with both losses coming to CPC.

It was a disappointing result from a game where the Wolves stifled Cedar Park’s one-woman wrecking crew, Irena Korolenko, holding her to just four points.

Only problem was, Coupeville couldn’t do much better itself on the offensive end of the floor.

“Our offense went cold,” said CHS coach Scott Fox. “We executed our game plan exactly how we wanted, but a few letdowns, and untimely makes on their end, made it tough to climb back into the game.

“Kids played extremely hard,” he added. “And, like always, I’m extremely proud of their effort.”

Coupeville came out strongly, jumping to an 8-3 lead after one quarter of play.

Getting buckets from Carolyn Lhamon and Avalon Renninger, plus a free throw off the fingertips of Hannah Davidson, the Wolves were ahead, then delivered a crusher when frosh Maddie Georges nailed a three-ball right before the buzzer.

Then the baskets closed up for business.

A rough second quarter, when an Izzy Wells bucket was the lone bright spot in a 10-2 deficit, sent the Wolves into the locker room trailing 13-10.

Things got worse after the break, with Cedar Park using a 17-7 run in the third, with Korolenko not scoring a single point, to take control of the game.

Georges finished with a team-high nine points, hitting pay dirt on three-ball attempts in three different quarters.

Joining her in scoring were Wells (4), Davidson (3), Renninger (2), Lhamon (2), and Scout Smith (1), while Chelsea Prescott, Mollie Bailey, Tia Wurzrainer, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, Anya Leavell, and Audrianna Shaw all saw floor time.

Coupeville gets a quick turnaround, as it heads to Port Townsend Saturday for a non-conference tilt with the RedHawks.

After that, the Wolves, who are sitting in 3rd place in the six-team North Sound Conference, close with league games against King’s (Jan. 28), Granite Falls (Jan. 31), and South Whidbey (Feb. 4).

The final two games are home affairs.

Droppin’ daggers, winnin’ games

They don’t call Alita Blouin “The Assassin” for nothing.

Showcasing her nerves of steel and her burning desire to watch her opponents cry themselves to sleep, the Coupeville High School freshman lives to deliver daggers.

Friday night in Bothell, Blouin came through one more time, banking in a pair of pressure-packed fourth-quarter free throws to lift the Wolf JV girls to a huge road win.

With a 29-26 victory over Cedar Park Christian, CHS sweeps the season series from the Eagles and improves to 5-1 in North Sound Conference play, 8-3 overall.

Blouin’s free throws iced the win, but Coupeville jumped on CPC early, roaring out to a 12-7 lead after one quarter of play.

Four different Wolves tallied points in the opening frame, with Ryanne Knoblich and Anya Leavell pacing the squad with four apiece.

From there, Coupeville edged the lead out to 15-9 at the half, then held a 21-15 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

That was the frame where Blouin shone brightest, as she dropped in five of her team’s eight points across the final eight minutes.

Blouin and Knoblich finished with team-high scoring honors, having rattled the rims for seven points each, while Leavell (6), Kylie Van Velkinburgh (5), Mollie Bailey (2), and Audrianna Shaw (2) also scored.

CHS coach Megan Smith got quality work from everyone in uniform, with Gwen Gustafson, Jessenia Camarena, Morgan Stevens, Ella Colwell, and Savana Allen also seeing floor time.

The Wolves get right back at it, heading to Port Townsend Saturday for a non-conference match-up with the Redhawks.

The game is a make-up for an earlier one which was cancelled due to high winds which shut down the ferry run.

Schedule your spring afternoons

The upcoming spring sports season, which kicks off March 2, is the finale for both the 2019-2020 school year, and for Coupeville’s two-year run in the North Sound Conference.

When a new school year rolls around in the fall, CHS will have dropped down a classification, from 1A to 2B, and will be off to rejoin old-school rivals in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

But, before we get there, five Wolf teams still have a season to play, with one squad — the softball sluggers — seeking to exit with back-to-back league titles.

As you peruse the schedules below, know that Mother Nature will undoubtedly wreak havoc with them at some point.

So, use them as a jumping off point, but also keep an eye out for changes, which you can find at a couple of places.
