Drills…

And more drills.

With a year of middle school play under their belt, the 8th graders are wise old veterans.

The countdown begins.

Coupeville Middle School volleyball players are hard at work, running drills and learning new skills, as they heads towards their first match.

Play begins Sept. 20, with a road trip to Sequim, while the Wolves home debut is set for Sept. 28.

CMS has five home matches this season, with play set to tip-off at 3:15 PM each time:

Sept. 28 — Stevens
Oct. 2 — Forks
Oct. 9 — Sequim
Oct. 23 — Chimacum
Oct. 25 — Port Townsend

While we’re waiting for competition to begin, 7th grade co-coach Kimberly Bepler provides us with a glimpse inside the gym with the photos above.

Bennett Boyles (center), hanging out with his basketball buddies. (Konni Smith photo)

The smile. Always the smile.

Whether he was on the basketball court, wearing a Coupeville uniform as he swished buckets, or in the darkest moments of his battle with cancer, Bennett Boyles never stopped smiling.

And while his physical body lost its battle earlier this year, Bennett’s legacy continues to build.

His community — his family, friends and fans, and anyone who met Bennett was a fan — continues to come together to celebrate his life and help others who are facing the same battle he did.

September is both Childhood Cancer Awareness month and also would have been Bennett’s 13th birthday.

To mark the moment, his mom, Lucienne Rivera, has launched a fundraiser, with a goal of raising $1,300 for Seattle Children’s Hospital.

“It’s a beautiful, gifted, and compassionate organization we are SO blessed to have close by,” she said.

The talented, but thin, roster for Coupeville Middle School football on day one.

They have talent, now they could just use a few more bodies.

The first official day of fall practice for Coupeville Middle School football revealed coach Bob Martin is looking at a short bench.

He had 14 Wolves on the field Wednesday, and would love to see some more of their classmates join them well before games start in two weeks.

For now, the roster:

Isaiah Bittner
Brawn Gadberry
Jesus Garcia-Partida
Scott Hilborn
Logan Martin
Caleb Meyer

Sarah Lyngra (top) and Kimberly Bepler are returning to coach where they once played.

Lyngra (35), back when she was peppering spikes as Sarah Powell.

Before she was a Bepler, #8 was a hard-hitting Stuurmans.

The wave of former Wolves returning to coach at their alma mater continues.

Kimberly Bepler and Sarah Lyngra have been tabbed to co-coach the Coupeville Middle School 7th grade volleyball squad, which starts practice Wednesday.

They replace Alexandra Goheen, who resigned this summer, and will work alongside Casie Dunleavy, who returns as the CMS 8th grade coach.

Official approval of their hires would come at the next school board meeting.

The duo, both star athletes during their younger days (when they went by their maiden names of Stuurmans and Powell, respectively), join an impressive roster of Wolf players turned coaches.

That list currently includes Brad Sherman, Jerry Helm, Megan Smith, Larry Hurlburt, Emily (Norris) Stevens, Amanda (Streubel) Jones and Jordan Ford.

Lyngra graduated from CHS in 1987, while Bepler is part of the Class of ’91.

Both played multiple sports during their time as Wolves, and their children are following in their footsteps.

Ariah Bepler, a senior, is adding football this year to basketball and track.

He matched dad Mark by qualifying for the state track meet last year.

Lyngra’s son, Nikolai, played basketball as a freshman last season, though he has a ways to go to catch his mom, who sits as the 20th best scorer all-time in the history of CHS girls basketball.
