CHS track stares down big-time rivals

Meanwhile, Kyle Burnett soared to a win in the pole vault.

The school names on the other jerseys don’t matter.

Work hard enough and own a big enough heart and small-town public school athletes can knock off the best that ritzy private schools have to offer.

That was proven once again Thursday, as the Coupeville High School track and field squad claimed 11 wins during a home meet against King’s and Cedar Park Christian.

The Wolf girls almost pulled off a stunner in the team battle, as well, before falling 62-61 to perennial state powerhouse King’s.

CPC came in a distant third on the day with 29 points.

Over on the boys side, it was a full-scale brawl, with King’s (54) nipping CPC (47) and Coupeville (42).

There were a lot of big-time performances for the Wolves Thursday, but junior Mallory Kortuem may have made the biggest statement.

She claimed wins in the 400 and pole vault, while also running a leg on a triumphant 4 x 200 relay squad.

Joining her on that unit were Lindsey Roberts, Maya Toomey-Stout, and freshman Ja’Kenya Hoskins, who also won the long jump.

Emma Smith (shot put) and Catherine Lhamon (3200) rounded out the female Wolf champs, while three boys also snatched top honors.

Danny Conlisk (100, 800) and Sean Toomey-Stout (long jump, triple jump) were double winners, while Kyle Burnett sailed high above the bar to claim a title in the pole vault

Coupeville also claimed 16 PR’s on the afternoon, with 12 different athletes notching at least one.

Freshman Alana Mihill scooped up three personal best performances (3200, discus, javelin), with Tiger Johnson (200, 400), and Elijah Okaruru (shot put, javelin) earning two apiece.

It’s a quick turn-around for many of Coupeville’s track stars, as the Wolves hit the road Saturday to attend the 14-team Lil’ Norway Invitational.

The meet, which is held at North Kitsap Stadium, features schools from four classifications.

Kamiak and South Kitsap are 4A, while Bainbridge and Central Kitsap are 3A, and Coupeville, Northwest, and Chimacum rep 1A.

2A will have the largest contingent with Ridgefield, Bremerton, Lynden, North Kitsap, Olympic, Port Angeles, and North Mason in attendance.

Come to our oval, expect to lose

Ja’Kenya Hoskins, training with Sean Toomey-Stout, set a PR in the 200 while also running a leg on two winning relay teams.

Invade Whidbey, get wrecked.

Defending their home turf with authority, the Coupeville High School girls track and field team roared to a team win Saturday at the six-team Coupeville Invite.

Piling up nine victories, including two individual wins each for Lucy Sandahl, Mallory Kortuem, and Lindsey Roberts, the Wolves held off Cedar Park Christian 137-101.

Mount Vernon Christian (100), Clallam Bay (67), and Crescent (7) rounded out the race.

Sandahl blazed to wins in the 800 and 1600, Roberts notched triumphs in the 100 hurdles and high jump, and Kortuem doubled her pleasure by claiming titles in the 400 and pole vault.

Catherine Lhamon also claimed first in the 3200 on mom Helene’s birthday, while the CHS 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay squads couldn’t be caught.

Those units were comprised of Roberts, Kortuem, and the quicksilver Hoskins sisters, Ja’Kenya and Ja’Tarya.

On the boy side, Coupeville nabbed wins in the 100 (Jean Lund-Olsen) and 400 (Danny Conlisk), while claiming third in the team race.

Mount Vernon Christian topped that battle with 166 points, staying well ahead of Cedar Park (128), Coupeville (92), Clallam Bay (50), and Crescent.

Lummi had a handful of athletes competing, but didn’t score in either team race.

After two meets in three days, Coupeville is now off until April 11.

The Wolves won’t have to go far for that meet, as they will once again be home, with King’s and Cedar Park scheduled to come to Whidbey.

Wolf track sets strong early pace

If the track season ended after the first meet, Coupeville High School would have two new state champions.

Now, of course, this is mid-March and the big showdown in Cheney doesn’t happen until the end of May.

So, simmer down, David.

But, that being said, as of this moment, the Wolves have the top time among all 1A athletes in two different events.

Danny Conlisk (200) and Jean Lund-Olsen (100) currently sit in the top slot, while Mallory Kortuem (400) and Lindsey Roberts (100 Hurdles) sit in 2nd in their respective events.

Overall, CHS has 13 athletes (nine girls and four boys) currently residing in the 1A Top 10 in at least one event, with eight of those Wolves popping up in two different categories.

As I admitted above, it’s early, with a lot of schools across the state yet to taste competition for the first time.

But here, in the moment, Coupeville is kickin’ fanny and takin’ names, so let’s celebrate the early success.

One school to rule them all

The Wildcats and Falcons came to play, but the Wolves came to feast.

Making a huge statement right out of the gate, the smallest of Whidbey’s three high schools came out on top Thursday at the season-opening Island Jamboree track and field meet in Oak Harbor.

Coupeville, led by four double winners — Maya Toomey-Stout, Lindsey Roberts, Danny Conlisk, and Sean Toomey-Stout — won 11 of 26 events.

That gave one of the smallest 1A schools in the state more wins than both 3A Oak Harbor, which claimed 10 wins, and arch-rival South Whidbey, which snagged five.

Emma Smith, Mallory Kortuem, and Jean Lund-Olsen also won for the Wolves, while Coupeville added a pair of second-place finishes and seven third-place results to its haul.

Along with the wealth of top-three finishes, CHS also copped 20 PR’s.

The personal best throws and times were spread out across 14 athletes, with six different Wolves claiming a pair of PR’s in the first action of the season.

As he surveyed the scene, longtime Coupeville track coach Randy King was a content man.

“Not bad when you are going against Oak Harbor and South Whidbey!,” he said.

Drafting off of their strong opening day showing, the Wolves return home next Thursday, Mar. 21, when they host Granite Falls and South Whidbey.

The meet, set to kick-off at 4 PM, is the first of three regular-season home events for CHS track and field.

His run is done!!

Coupeville High School senior Danny Conlisk hit the tape on his year-long run as the student rep to the school board Monday, with his older compatriots honoring him as he exited stage left.

The Wolf track and cross country standout is being replaced by junior Tia Wurzrainer, who will juggle the position along with stints as a soccer, basketball and tennis sensation.
