Wolves, Falcons rumble on (surprisingly) dry courts

The sun will come out tomorrow, or maybe today if you wait long enough.

Getting the better of Mother Nature and weather forecasters alike Tuesday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad managed to get its match played at South Whidbey.

And while the Wolves ultimately fell 4-1 to the perennial powerhouse Falcons, it was the first on-court action against a rival for CHS in two weeks.

Better to play the best and get tested than sit on the sidelines.

Now 1-3 on the season, with all of its losses coming to bigger schools, Coupeville will try and make it two Island rivalry duels in one week.

South Whidbey is slated to travel to Central Whidbey Friday, allowing the 2B Wolves and 1A Falcons to finish off their non-conference home-and-away clash for 2023.

After that, CHS plays Friday Harbor — the only other Northwest 2B/1B League foe which fields a tennis program — three straight times.

Wolf netters draw first blood

Advantage, Coupeville.

The Wolf girls’ tennis team went island-hopping Tuesday and pulled out a 3-2 win against archrival Friday Harbor in the first of four meetings between the Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

The match was knotted at 2-2 when Lucy Tenore and Skylar Parker teamed up to win a fierce fight at second doubles.

With the victory, Coupeville gets to 1-0 in league play, 1-1 overall, with a non-conference road match at South Whidbey set for Thursday.

Friday Harbor and CHS are the only schools in the seven-team NWL to field tennis programs, and the Wolverines and Wolves will clash three more times this season.

Coupeville is slated to host matches Mar. 31 and Apr. 21, then will hop back on the ferry May 2.

Wolf netters swing into a new season

The weather was fair, and the tennis was hot.

The Coupeville High School netters kicked off a new season Thursday, putting up a strong fight before being nipped 3-2 by visiting Granite Falls.

“Not bad for a first match,” said longtime Wolf tennis guru Ken Stange.

With only one other Northwest 2B/1B League rival playing girls tennis — the Wolves and Friday Harbor clash four times — CHS has four non-conference matches scheduled against 1A schools.

Coupeville will play home and away series with Granite Falls and South Whidbey, with the rematch against the Tigers set for Mar. 27.

After opening at home, the Wolves play their next three matches on the road, not returning to their own courts again until Mar. 31.

Nab snazzy artwork, support CHS seniors

Buy a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork and help support Coupeville High School seniors.

Fans attending Tuesday’s Senior Night Wolf basketball games (5:15 girls, 7:00 boys) will have a chance to participate in a silent auction to claim ownership of a painting by Coupeville student Helen Strelow.

The CHS senior created the piece, entitled “The Reserve,” for last summer’s Race the Reserve event.

A limited series of prints were awarded to top finishers in each of the day’s races.

Now, the original artwork can be bid on, and you can get into the Helen Strelow business early, before the prices likely skyrocket in the coming years.

The painting in question is a watercolor and watercolor gouache painting on cold pressed watercolor paper.

The original artwork is 11″ x 15″ and comes in at 14″ x 18″ with a black frame with white matting.

A certificate of authenticity will be included.

The silent auction, like Race the Reserve, benefits Coupeville’s senior class, with all money raised going to the Class of 2023’s graduation festivities.

Strelow is a standout student, photographer, artist, and athlete who has advanced to the state meet twice as a cross country runner.

As a junior, she won the girls individual title at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships, then came back around as a senior to lead the Wolf girls to the big dance.

It was the first time CHS had sent an entire team to the state cross country meet since the 1980’s.

Strelow, whose younger brother Thomas is also a Wolf harrier, also plays tennis and is expected to be Coupeville’s #1 singles player this spring.

In her spare time, she also recently finished a commissioned piece for The Cove, the snazzy coffee cafe located on the Coupeville Wharf.

After graduation this spring, Strelow plans to attend Montana State University, where she will work towards an art degree.

Expect many more people to be impressed by her accomplishments and talent in the coming years.

Hall zips, Wolves howl

Coupeville’s runners bask in a top-notch performance.

The rain came, the smoke got at least a bit better, and everyone returned to running.

After postponing the event a day because of bad air quality, Northwest 2B/1B League cross country teams held their league championship meet Friday in Mount Vernon.

And, when they did, Coupeville made its presence felt, in a big way.

Wolf senior Mitchell Hall won an individual title, the pride of Prairie Center Market beating the field by more than a minute across the 5,000-meter course.

But there was more, much more, as the Wolf girls won a team title outright, while the CHS boys shared the crown with Orcas Island.

Coming off a fantastic all-around day, Coupeville gets right back to work getting ready for the rest of the postseason tour.

Next up for the Wolves is the 14-school Tri-District Championships, which goes down Thursday, Oct. 27 at Ft. Steilacoom Park in Lakewood.

That’s the lead-in to the 2B/1B state meet, and the Wolf girls have a much better shot than their male counterparts at qualifying for the big dance.

The top three girls’ teams, and the top 21 individual runners, qualify for state.

On the boy’s side of things, Districts 1, 2, and 3 are getting the short end of the stick for state meet allocations this season, with only the top team and the first seven individual runners advancing.

The state meet is Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
