Set the pace, every race

As March fades into April, two Wolves are favorites for state track titles.

Coupeville High School senior Danny Conlisk and junior Jean Lund-Olsen currently top all 1A runners in the 400 and 200, respectively.

The duo headline a group of nine Wolves who appear in the Top 10 of at least one event.

Conlisk and fellow senior Lindsey Roberts appear in a team-best four categories, while Lund-Olsen and Mallory Kortuem show up three times apiece.

While everyone’s first inclination is to look at the front-runners, the most impressive showing might be coming from Roberts.

Everyone knew she was a superior hurdler and relay runner, but she picked up a new event this week, taking on the high jump.

Presto, a week in and two meets down, and Lou is #10 in 1A.

Plus, having already hit four feet, 11 inches, Roberts is just three inches off the school record of 5-02, set 20 years ago by Yashmeen Knox.

Wolf track soars at Shoreline

Logan Martin (right) also set a personal best in the discus, as Coupeville High School track and field competed in an eight-team meet at King’s.

They rose to the occasion.

Competing at an eight-team meet Thursday at Woolsey Stadium in Shoreline, the Coupeville High School track and field squad came away with four wins and 21 PR’s.

The Wolves finished third in the girls team standings, and fourth in the boys, while host King’s claimed both team titles.

South Whidbey, Bellevue Christian, Grace Academy, Mount Vernon Christian, La Conner and Shoreline Christian rounded out the field.

Leading Coupeville were individual winners Mallory Kortuem (400), Danny Conlisk (400), Jean Lund-Olsen (100) and Ryan Labrador (shot put).

Emma Smith (shot put), Lund-Olsen (200), Koa Davison (high jump), Lindsey Roberts (100 hurdles and high jump), and both girls relay teams claimed 2nd place finishes.

Coupeville gets right back at it in two days, hosting a meet Saturday at Mickey Clark Field. Things kick off at 11 AM.

Wolves run to stun

Two weeks in and primed to win two state titles.

The track and field season is just starting to really get going, but if the season ended today, Coupeville’s girls would stand atop two awards podiums.

Senior Lindsey Roberts, who finished 2nd at last year’s state meet, currently has the fastest time among all 1A girls in the 100 hurdles.

The rocket-powered supernova also sits atop the 1A rankings in the 4 x 200 relay, where she runs with Mallory Kortuem, Ja’Kenya Hoskins, and Maya Toomey-Stout.

If you scan the 1A ranking, six Wolf girls and four boys currently hold a Top 10 placement.

Senior Danny Conlisk and junior Maya Toomey-Stout are the team’s aces at the moment, popping up four times apiece.

Hot on their heels are Roberts, Mallory Kortuem, Jean Lund-Olsen, and Sean Toomey-Stout, who each appear three times.

We are Wolf track, hear us roar

Jean Lund-Olsen has places to be, and wants to get there quickly.

Small, but mighty.

As devoted track and field mom Sherry Roberts noted, the Coupeville High School squads might not have the deepest rosters, but what they have is a ton of talent.

Making sure the world knows, the Wolves dominated at their first home meet Thursday afternoon, taking first in the girls competition, and second in the boys standings.

The CHS girls, carried by seven wins, including two relay victories, racked up 76 points, edging South Whidbey (69.5) and Granite Falls (64.5), while La Conner (19) brought up the rear.

Emma Smith (shot put), Catherine Lhamon (1600), Maya Toomey-Stout (100), Mallory Kortuem (400), and Lindsey Roberts (100 hurdles) went to the top of the medal stand, while the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 squads couldn’t be caught.

Both of those relay units feature Toomey-Stout, Roberts, and Kortuem, with the Hoskins sisters, Ja’Tarya and Ja’Kenya, each popping up once in the mix.

Over on the boys side of things, South Whidbey used its depth to overcame seven individual Wolf wins, capturing the team battle 108.5-79.

Granite (32.5) nipped La Conner (29) to claim third.

Jean Lund-Olsen and Sean Toomey-Stout were the main men for Coupeville.

The former swept to wins in the 100 and 200, setting PR’s in both events, while the latter triumphed in long jump and triple jump, while tying teammate Chris Battaglia for first in the javelin.

Rounding out the Wolf winners were Ryan Labrador in the shot put and Danny Conlisk in the 400.

The win was especially sweet for Labrador, who was celebrating his 18th birthday.

Coupeville racked up 41 PR’s on the day, with 20 athletes nabbing at least one.

Megan Behan, Chris Ruck, Brian Casey, Tiger Johnson, Mikaela Labrador, and Elijah Okaruru topped all Wolf competitors, each hauling in 3 PR’s.

It’s the calm before the storm.

Less than 24 hours from now, the 2018-2019 high school basketball season officially kicks off, with Meridian traveling to Coupeville Tuesday for a girls basketball rumble.

The Wolf boys take the court the next night, hosting Oak Harbor, and the next few months will be jam-packed with hoops action (and the vocal support of the CHS cheer squad).

As the minutes tick down until the first tip of the season, local paparazzi John Fisken swings by to drop off a collection of winter sports portraits.

Sort of a photographic amuse-bouche, as it were.
