Three days away.

The high school basketball season officially kicks off Saturday, when the Coupeville High School girls’ squad heads to Sedro-Woolley for a jamboree.

Real games tip-off Tuesday, Nov. 29, with the Wolf boys hosting Blaine, and the girls making the trip to the border to face the same school.

As you count down the hours, take a gander at a fresh batch of pix courtesy wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken.

While we can’t claim every single Wolf player is shown (a few were AWOL at the moment the camera was clicking), you can see at least 98.4% of them.

Eight days away.

As practice continues to play out, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ hoops squads are getting closer to their first action against someone not wearing the same uniform.

Opening afternoon is Thursday, Dec. 1, when Sequim comes to Whidbey (3:15 tip-off).

In preparation for the 10-game season, the young Wolves got their first taste of the photographic life recently when John Fisken wandered by the gym.

The photos above are courtesy him.

As the season progresses, we’ll have a lot more pics, and you’ll be able to buy glossies for Grandma over at Fisken’s site — http://www.johnsphotos.net/.

Girls basketball is booming in Cow Town.

At every level, high school to elementary school, Coupeville hoops stars are laying down beat-downs.

Over the weekend, both of the Wolf girls SWISH teams handily won games, with the 6th graders pounding Mt. Vernon and the 7th/8th graders decimating a pair of Canadian squads.

Wanderin’ camera man John Fisken swung by the off-Island games and nabbed us the snappy pics seen above.

Basketball is officially back.

The sounds of shoes squeaking and leather smacking against the hard-wood echoes across the prairie, interrupted every so often by the soft click-click of wandering cameraman John Fisken.

The photos above, which are courtesy him, come from the first days of practice, as the CHS hoops squads get back at it.

Coupeville’s girls team, coached by David and Amy King, is a two-time defending 1A Olympic League champ coming off its first trip to the state tourney in a decade.

The boys, under the guidance of Anthony Smith and Dustin Van Velkinburgh, won nine games in 2015-2016, their best showing since 2011.

The days to come will tell the tale of how Coupeville will replace departed legends such as Makana Stone and Wiley Hesselgrave, and who will pick up the mantle.

For now, bask in the first photos and the promise of a new season.

“And I’m outta here.” A broken play, a huge bounce, an alert player and a 67-yard reception.

It was the play of the year.

Seen here for the first time in all its flip-book glory, thanks to John Fisken, is a wild series of events that somehow, against all odds, worked 100% in favor of the Coupeville High School football squad.

Playing on the road against Bellevue Christian in an extremely tight game, with a 100-year storm supposedly on its way (spoiler: it wasn’t), the Wolves needed a miracle.

And they got it.

With quarterback Hunter Downes sent to the bench for a play by an over-zealous ref, Hunter Smith took the snap and fired a pass to Matt Hilborn.

The BC defender and the ball arrived at the same time, causing the football to kick upwards, seemingly a lost opportunity for the Wolves.

Except … Cameron Toomey-Stout, tracking the play the whole way, appeared out of nowhere to snatch the ball in mid-air, then turned it into a 67-yard dash to daylight that dropped jaws throughout the stadium.

In a season that saw records broken and The Bucket come back to Cow Town after Coupeville mashed arch-rival South Whidbey, the Smith-to-Hilborn-to-ToomeyStout miracle stands tall.
