Rampaging freshman Sean Toomey-Stout already has the whole “tackling like a wild beast” thing down cold.

No one worried about the score, but Friday was still important.

With Coupeville High School’s football team sitting eight days away from its season opener (Sept. 3 at home vs. South Whidbey), the Wolves got a chance to go out and hit someone who wasn’t their own teammate.

The occasion was a three-team jamboree down La Conner way, with Coupeville and Burlington-Edison filling out the marquee.

The game gave the Wolves a chance to run through their offense and defense under game-like conditions (and the watchful eye of first-year head coach Jon Atkins).

It also might have provided a little bit of an informal scouting session, as Coupeville returns to La Conner in Week 2 (Sept. 9) for a non-conference game with the Braves.

As the teams battled under a scorching sun, wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken worked the sidelines, capturing the late-summer gridiron action.

Lauren Grove

The start of a new season brings a smile to Wolf goalie Lauren Grove’s face.

They can wander, but the beautiful game always calls them home.

As summer winds down, the Coupeville High School booters are back it, prepping for a new season and another run at Klahowya.

Coming off of back-to-back second-place finishes in the 1A Olympic League, the young ‘n hungry Wolves are eyeing the top prize this season.

To get there, they’ll have to put in work, which is why they were toiling away under the sunshine Wednesday, when wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken strolled by, camera in hand.

Joseph Wedekind: “I have to swat you. You’re a tennis ball, I’m a hard-court assassin. It’s just the way things are in this crazy, mixed-up world.”

Like the swallows returning to San Juan Capistrano, the netters have migrated back to the hard-courts.

As summer winds down, the Coupeville High School tennis players have grabbed their rackets and kicked off the opening week of practice.

While the Wolves lost several key players to graduation, they return a number of talented veterans, who will mesh with bright-eyed newcomers.

All are intent on defending Coupeville’s 1A Olympic League title and adding a fresh title board to the school’s brand spanking new historical display in the gym.

As they toiled under longtime CHS tennis guru Ken Stange Wednesday, the Wolves also had to deal with a wandering paparazzi or two, who were intent on capturing their early-season work.

We did it.

And let me stress the first word in that three-word sentence — WE.

When you walk in the Coupeville High School gym in the days to come, when you see what has risen, what has been remembered, what has been rediscovered, it is not the work of one person.

It is the work of a nation, of a Wolf Nation.

Everyone who chipped in, through donations, advice, access, historical knowledge, or just a pat on the back, shares in the history which now plays out on the gym wall.

For the first time, Wolf faithful and rivals alike can look up and see the complete tale of CHS sports play out in front of their eyes in living (glossy) color.

Pick the sport of your choice and you can see the changes in leagues, the rise (and sometimes fall) of a program’s success, and the moments which will live forever for the athletes, coaches and fans who participated.

Decades of history which has been locked away largely in dusty newspaper clippings is now front and center, the way it should be.

The warriors of the past are being honored, while the current generation has a target.

It’s been a long time coming and all the work paid off nicely.

Thank you, one and all.

Put in the work now, win later.

That’s the goal for Coupeville High School’s fall sports programs, which all put in practice time Monday.

Wandering camera clicker John Fisken was able to nab three of the five Wolf teams in action, netting volleyball, football and cheer.

Boys tennis and girls soccer were also scheduled to make their practice debuts Monday, and we’ll try and nab some photos of those squads in the coming days.

Until then, a picturesque look at some of the Wolves who will light up the scoreboard this season.
