track

Even Makana Stone would have trouble accelerating around this corner.

Well, it looks different.

Work on replacing the track oval at Mickey Clark Field continues full bore, as we sit 78 days away from the first high school football game of the season.

The vintage track is gone, replaced (for the moment) with a lot of sand, while heavy machinery continues to run wild, ripping things up.

Travelin’ photo man John Fisken wandered into the danger zone to snap these pics for us, giving everyone a feel for how the project is moving along.

He was never seen again, leading me to believe he might have been buried in the end zone, Jimmy Hoffa-style.

At least he left behind some photos…

The paparazzi is branching out.

Camera clicker John Fisken, who has made a name for himself snapping pics at sporting events on and off Whidbey Island, has expanded his services.

Fisken, who by sheer coincidence celebrates a birthday today, has launched a web site — John’s Photos — where you can experience all of his snappy plans for the future.

While he’ll still be offering all the usual sports fare, a mix of action shots and behind the scenes portraits, Fisken will now be available to shoot just about anything, with two minor exceptions.

No weddings and he’s not going into the delivery room with you to document lil’ Billy or Sally’s probably-messy entrance into the world.

But, want a beautiful family portrait?

Want someone to document your prom, your military ball, your family reunion or a billion other things?

Need crystal clear pics documenting your real estate listings?

He’s the guy, boasting a strong work ethic and reasonable prices.

You could reach out to him cause it’s his birthday.

Or, you could do it because he’s very, very good at what he does, both in terms of picture quality, diversity of what he shoots and his ability to work with anyone.

I mean, he puts up with me for nine months a year, as I harass him day and night with increasingly bizarre and frantic sports shooting requests.

If he can survive that, he’ll do just fine getting great aunt Ethelyne to let him capture a photo worthy of putting on the mantle.

But don’t just take my word for it.

To see what I’m rambling about, pop over to his site and see what Fisken offers, while basking in some of the work he’s already produced.

It’s official.

After a day or two of online arguing with the underclassmen over who was and wasn’t a senior at this point in time, the Coupeville High School Class of 2016 officially departed Friday night.

Speeches were made, tears and hugs were exchanged, and diplomas were handed out, while travelin’ photo man John Fisken clicked away.

The pics above are courtesy him.

He’s also put together a collection of EVERY SINGLE Wolf grad getting their diploma over at his personal website.

For a team which was only pulled together at the very last moment, the Venom did pretty dang good.

By the time the Central Whidbey Little League Juniors softball squad was done thumping people, it finished 13-3 and won a league title.

Along for the ride Thursday night during the season finale was wanderin’ photo man John Fisken, who clicked the pics above.

While not showing all 10 Venom players, they do give you a great sneak peak at some of the sluggers who should go on to star for CHS in the coming years.

The bleachers are gone, but the dilapidated press box of my misspent youth hangs on … for the moment. (John Fisken photos)

press box

When they rip it down, someone keep all the dead bees you find inside. There will be at least 12,000 of them. Trust me on that.

The bleachers were led away. “Tell me about the rabbits, George…” Then, a single gunshot and the bleachers were quiet, forever.

Just in case someone forgets...

Just in case someone forgets.

Yikes.

We sit three months away from the first CHS football game of the season (Sept. 2 at home vs. South Whidbey) and it’s safe to say some work will need to be done between now and then.

Which is exactly the point, as the long-anticipated revamp of the school’s track has officially begun.

The bleachers are gone, leaving the press box to look even more sad in their absence, and things are beginning to be ripped up.

Over the next couple of months, the outdated, six-lane track will be torn to bits and replaced with a snappy new eight-lane masterpiece.

That will allow CHS to host track meets for the first time in years, something Wolf stars like Lindsey Roberts, Jacob Smith and Skyler Lawrence can look forward to.

The plan is to eventually have brand new permanent bleachers in place (and maybe a posh new press box … nudge, nudge, wink, wink), though the school may go with portable bleachers this coming fall.

As the transition kicks off, John Fisken wandered through the currently rough-looking environment to snap a few pics for us all to goggle at.
