Call it the big beat-down.

Combining an air-tight defense with another spectacular offensive show from state scoring leader Mia Littlejohn, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad romped to a 4-1 win Thursday over visiting Port Townsend.

The win lifts the Wolves to 3-1 in 1A Olympic League play and pulls them within a half-game of first-place Klahowya (3-0).

Coupeville is 5-2-1 overall, with four wins in its last five matches.

The victory, a nice comeback after a loss at Klahowya earlier in the week, left CHS coach Troy Cowan a bit giddy.

When asked if the Wolves had beat Port Townsend, his response:

“Yes sir, like a drum, like a government mule, like they stole from us!!!”

Littlejohn provided all the offense Coupeville needed, putting together her fifth hat trick of the season.

She has 19 goals at the halfway point of the 16-game regular season, one shy of Abraham Leyva’s single-season school scoring record.

Littlejohn carved up the RedHawk defense in three different ways, scoring on a penalty kick, on an unassisted run, and off of a sweet set-up from Sage “The General” Renninger.

The team captain picked up a second assist when she triggered a play on which defender Lindsey Roberts “connected on a Scud missile shot that found pay dirt.”

It was the second goal this season for the sophomore sensation.

When Port Townsend was on the attack, the RedHawk charge was largely blunted by the Wolf ‘d.’

“Defense played incredible,” Cowan said. “Megan DePorter is a master of running our defense.

“The Wonder Twins (Lindsey Roberts and goalie Lauren Grove) played lights out too.”

Cowan also praised the play of freshman Mallory Kortuem, who “drew the toughest assignment tonight, having to shadow one of the most physically gifted players we face.”

Coupeville travels to Chimacum Tuesday for a league game, then plays three straight non-conference tilts before getting its rematch with Klahowya Oct. 18.

It was a tale of two halves, at least scoring wise.

Sparked by the booming leg of sophomore defender Lindsey Roberts, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer team jumped to a commanding lead Thursday against arch-rival South Whidbey.

But the pesky Falcons hung tough, scored two late goals (one aided by a questionable ref call) and somehow managed to force a 2-2 tie in the regular season opener.

With the game being a non-conference affair, the teams didn’t take their battle to overtime, instead accepting a draw.

Up until South Whidbey slipped in the tying goal with a little under five minutes left on the clock, the game seemed fairly lopsided in favor of the host Wolves.

Coupeville out-shot their visitors by a ton, but the scoring touch it showed in the first half slipped away a bit after the halftime break.

The Wolves continued to rain down shots, and had a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead, and probably a win, in the final seconds of injury time.

With the clock frozen and the game in the hands of the ref and his own personal watch, Lauren Bayne picked up a ball deep in Falcon territory and ripped a screaming shot.

Unfortunately, it was a little too hot, caught an updraft and flew through the football uprights for what would have been a beautiful field goal, letting South Whidbey off the hook.

The Falcons tied the game off of a free kick with 4:42 left in the game.

Or, actually, two free kicks.

The first one sailed wide left of the goal, but the ref called the ball back and allowed South Whidbey to set back up and try again.

No one was quite sure why, but the ultimate consensus was it had something to do with whether a whistle was blown, or not blown, or maybe the ref was just in a really forgiving mood.

Whatever the rationale, the Falcons took advantage and banged home the free kick, sending it into the upper left corner of the net, just a fraction too high for Wolf goalie Lauren Grove to snag.

Grove was solid all game, making several key saves, including one in which she speared the ball while leaping to touch the top of the net.

And, early on, the Wolves repaid her, hitting the back of the net twice in the first half.

Roberts, who has replaced the graduated Jenn Spark as having the most fearsome leg on the CHS roster, notched the year’s first goal 10 minutes in when she lashed a free kick from the far left side of the field.

Her shot curved nicely and hit pay dirt with the sound of a gun going off.

Then, at the 28 minute mark of the first half, Roberts once again earned screams of “Louuuuuuu” from her faithful fans when she whipped a shot into the middle, setting up Mia Littlejohn for a score.

The pass was a perfect set-up and the finish even better, as the junior caught the ball on her toe and perfectly angled the ball past the flailing goalie.

While the Wolves ultimately didn’t hold on to the lead, CHS coach Troy Cowan came away pleased with a lot of what he saw develop on the pitch.

“Overall, I was really happy,” he said. “For a first match, with several freshmen playing in key spots, I thought we played well.

“We’ll go back and make some adjustments and work on spacing in practice, but we out-shot them, by a lot, and we came away healthy, which you always like to see after the first match.”

Cowan hailed Roberts for her two-way play (she continually cleared the ball with passion in the backfield and hustled back to save Grove late in the game with a key deflection when the goalie got trapped outside the box).

He also lauded his freshmen.

All five ninth graders on the roster — Mallory Kortuem, Tia Wurzrainer, Avalon Renninger, Megan Thorn and Anna Dion — saw crucial field time.

Mallory and Tia are new defenders and they started in their first match in a new system and really handled themselves well,” Cowan said. “That was very nice to see.”

The Wolfpack.

They sacrificed some of their free time for future success.

Four Coupeville High School basketball players and one plucky middle school hard-court ace traveled to Bellingham this week to attend a summer hoops camp at Western Washington University.

Wolf senior Kailey Kellner, sophomores Lindsey Roberts and Sarah Wright, freshman Avalon Renninger and 8th grader Genna Wright all gave up a bit of their vacation time for the popular event.

It was the first time at the camp for the two youngest Coupeville hoops stars, while the older trio were all returning veterans.

The camp made all the players stretch their skill-set, with most of them put in control of the ball as a point guard.

An increase in battle-hardened ball-handlers could pay huge dividends for the Wolves going forward.

And it’s not the only camp in play this summer for Coupeville girls.

Six Wolves — Kellner, Tiffany Briscoe, Kalia Littlejohn, Allison Wenzel, Kyla Briscoe and Mia Littlejohn –are tentatively slated to attend a shooting clinic at King’s High School in August.

If it’s summer, it’s time to go to camp.

A whopping 19 players accompanied Coupeville High School girls’ basketball coaches David and Amy King to Ocean Shores this year and they’re knee deep in hoops.

With the Wolves fielding both a varsity and JV team at the annual hoops extravaganza, it’s four games a day (at least), with start times as early as 8 AM and as late as 10 PM.

As the two-time defending 1A Olympic League champs work on their game, Amy King and her camera are busy documenting the behind the scenes activity for us.

The paparazzi is branching out.

Camera clicker John Fisken, who has made a name for himself snapping pics at sporting events on and off Whidbey Island, has expanded his services.

Fisken, who by sheer coincidence celebrates a birthday today, has launched a web site — John’s Photos — where you can experience all of his snappy plans for the future.

While he’ll still be offering all the usual sports fare, a mix of action shots and behind the scenes portraits, Fisken will now be available to shoot just about anything, with two minor exceptions.

No weddings and he’s not going into the delivery room with you to document lil’ Billy or Sally’s probably-messy entrance into the world.

But, want a beautiful family portrait?

Want someone to document your prom, your military ball, your family reunion or a billion other things?

Need crystal clear pics documenting your real estate listings?

He’s the guy, boasting a strong work ethic and reasonable prices.

You could reach out to him cause it’s his birthday.

Or, you could do it because he’s very, very good at what he does, both in terms of picture quality, diversity of what he shoots and his ability to work with anyone.

I mean, he puts up with me for nine months a year, as I harass him day and night with increasingly bizarre and frantic sports shooting requests.

If he can survive that, he’ll do just fine getting great aunt Ethelyne to let him capture a photo worthy of putting on the mantle.

But don’t just take my word for it.

To see what I’m rambling about, pop over to his site and see what Fisken offers, while basking in some of the work he’s already produced.
