Mattea Miller: Serene Superstar. (John Fisken photo)

Mattea Miller is serenity and strength intertwined in one remarkable young woman.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, has been one of the best athletes we’ve been blessed to have in our town for the past four years.

Pick a sport, any sport, and Mattea can make a sizable impact, from soccer to basketball to track and field, and everything in between.

She is a hustler, a hard worker, a tenacious, never-say-die coach’s dream.

A deeply-committed, tremendously-supportive, rock-solid anchor for any squad, an ideal teammate.

Of both those things, there is no doubt.

But Mattea has always been about far more than just sports, and to talk about her as only an athlete would do her a great disservice.

Good athletes come and go, and we appreciate what they accomplish.

But, every so often, there is a true rarity such as Miss Miller, someone who in their own quiet way soars far above the crowd.

I can honestly say, in four years of high school sports, and middle school before that, I have never heard a single disparaging word said about her.

Which is rare in the hot house world of constantly roiling teen drama that is prep sports, where even the most likable person usually manages to tick off someone from time to time.

Idiots like myself, well, we’re just lucky not to have fans throw wadded-up hot dog wrappers at us some days…

Not Mattea, who always seems genuinely kind and caring to all around her (or hides her true serial killer nature really, really, extremely well.)

My impression of her has always been that this is a young woman who seems to always look for the good in others and is repaid in kind.

Or, at least I hope she is repaid.

I hope those around her realize what a wonderful human being she seems to be every day, and show her some appreciation.

Mattea is a superb athlete, talent mixed with drive, but she is a far better person, a brilliant, compassionate, strong young woman with a soaring soul, and that is so much more important.

On her cake day, the last one of her high school days, I hope she is surrounded by family and friends, and I hope she realizes how much her town and her fans think of her.

It has been an honor to write about you, Mattea, and I have no doubt there will be many more stories to tell as you head out to captivate the outside world.

Whatever you do, wherever you go after high school, there’s a whole new group of people about to discover what Coupeville already knows — you are the very definition of awesome.

We are in a golden age of female athletics in Coupeville.

Now sure, there are a lot of very talented male athletes as well. But, as a group, the women are kicking butt and taking names.

From last year’s league title winning girls’ basketball and tennis squads on down, the young women who wear the red and black at CHS are a talented, confident bunch.

And today is a magical day in which three bright shining stars all share a birthday, united by currently calling Cow Town home and by their general awesomeness.

Julia Borges is the newest addition, having arrived from Brazil to spend a year on The Rock as a foreign exchange student.

Already she is front and center with the Wolf cheer squad, her radiant smile beaming out as she joins in with her teammates during football games.

There is little rhyme or reason to where foreign exchange students are sent to, but, once again, we hit the jackpot by getting one of the best available.

Julia has been an outstanding addition to Wolf Nation, one who will always be a part of our little world, even after she heads home to the big city.

Joining her in celebrating her day of cake is Arisbeth Montiel, a two-way terror who joins Borges on the Wolf cheer squad while also being one of the leading goal scorers for the Coupeville girls’ soccer squad.

Whether she’s banging home scores on the soccer pitch, where she teams up with Kalia and Mia Littlejohn to form a potent trio putting the fear of God into opposing goalies, or working the pom poms, Arisbeth is another stellar addition to a group of Wolf female athletes taking the world by storm.

And capping our birthday trio is the legend herself, Mattea Miller, the Alaskan Assassin, who has sparkled in so many sports it’s hard to keep count.

Soccer, basketball, track. She can do it all and more, and remains, like best friend Valen Trujillo, the gold standard for student/athletes at CHS.

Mattea has never been one to shout and scream and thump herself on the chest. Instead, she is the athlete who quietly does whatever is necessary, the dirty work or the star work, and sparkles at it all.

If they come to us and say, go pick someone who your town can hold up proudly, as an athlete, but even more so, as a person, a young woman of class and determination, who always shows love for her family and friends, someone who is worthy of being hailed for her character and her sweet nature, someone who will fight on the field but embrace others afterwards, Miller accomplishes all of that.

She is one of the special ones.

As all three of these young women — top scholars, feisty athletes, special people — celebrate their cake day, we want to wish them the best.

Arisbeth, Julia, Mattea, you make this town better for your presence. May your day sparkle as much as you all do.

Hanging out with lil' sis Mattea.

Hanging out with lil’ sis Mattea.

All cheerleaders smile.

Few radiate the warmth that Coupeville High School senior Ashlyn Miller does, however.

Through rain, wind or fog on the football sideline, her spirit never flagged.

Her voice never wavered, her spirit never broke, and, most of all, she sent a genuine sense of happiness out to everyone who surrounded her.

That’s a personality trait that carries over in her non-cheer life, as well.

As part of a dynamic duo with younger sister Mattea, Ashlyn is one of the best and brightest the Wolves have to offer the world.

Alaska’s loss is Coupeville’s gain.

As she celebrates her 18th birthday today, a week away from what I anticipate will be the start of her final high school track season (she was a sprinter/thrower/relay whiz as a junior), here’s best wishes to a truly talented, radiant young woman.

Happy birthday, Miss Miller! Never stop being awesome.

Former Wolf hoopsters Katie Kiel (left) and Jai’Lysa Hoskins, reunited and it feels so good.

Best team in the league. The whole league.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad sits at 4-2 after their stunning come-from-behind win over 2A Sequim Saturday.

Not only do the Wolves have the most wins of any of the four 1A schools in the league, they would also top any of the seven 2A schools.

Plus, they take pretty good pictures. So, there’s that.

John Fisken snapped the pics which reside above, a mix of the varsity and the almost-as-successful Wolf JV (3-3).

The odds were not in their favor.

Suiting up just six players, while visiting Bellevue Christian had a full bench and a six-foot-one starter who towered above her foes, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team was at a disadvantage Saturday.

Or were they?

Powered by a scorching hot Mattea Miller, who pumped in a team-high 18 from every direction, the scrappy Wolves ran the Vikings off the court early, then held on for a wild 32-30 win in overtime.

The victory, the second in less than 24 hours, lifted CHS to 2-1. Imagine what they might do when they get back all their players.

Primed to stop the BC ceiling scraper, Wolf defenders Kailey Kellner and Allison Wenzel teamed up to largely shut her down.

Kailey and Allison did a great job keeping her from getting the ball or being able to do much with it,” said Wolf coach Amy King.

Coupeville broke open the game early, surging to a 13-5 lead at the break, before eventually showing the effects of tired legs.

Knowing the Wolves had no depth, Bellevue kept the pace of the game fast in an effort to rattle them.

“They were really smart to press us the whole game except the first quarter and play us man the entire game,” King said. “They knew we had a short bench and took advantage of that.

“Overall we did a good job breaking the press but struggled on offense,” she added. “The girls were tired and that showed often. But they played with heart and determination.”

After inching back into the game, Bellevue sent it into OT with a last-second shot that was a prayer answered.

“The battle in the fourth quarter went back and forth; we had the lead and watched it dwindle,” King said. “They had a girl who kept putting up shots, ending with 20 points. We had several girls try to defend her.

“Some of her shots were just thrown up towards the basket like the one that tied the game,” she added. “It was a bullet that danced on the rim long enough to drop.”

Not flustered (or hiding it well) the tired Wolves reached down deep in the extra period.

Miller, who snatched 13 boards and two steals to go with her offensive display, scored five in the overtime, including a game-clinching free throw.

Kyla Briscoe started things off, sinking a shot from the weak side, then Tator stepped up and went all Michael Jordan on the Vikings.

Mattea played smooth like always but got more aggressive on her shot,” King said. “It was nice to see her reading passes and getting the fast break lay up.”

Key to the win was another strong performance on the boards for the aggressive Wolves.

Kellner hauled down 18, to go with eight steals and three blocks, while Briscoe matched Miller with 13. Wenzel got her hands on another 11.

While Miller had the hot shooting touch, four of her five teammates also chipped into the scoring effort. Lauren Grove popped for five, Kellner banged home four, Wenzel netted three and Briscoe saved her bucket for OT.

With her squad the only one of the four Wolf teams that netted a win Saturday, King was justifiably proud of her starting five and plucky reserve Brisa Herrera.

“Excited for the girls with this win,” she said. “They worked so hard and as a team. Wolf pride at its finest!”
