Wolf players turn out to support their male counterparts during a recent game.

Time to start thinking ahead.

The Coupeville Middle School boys basketball season is still going strong — three more games are left on the schedule, with the season and home finale set for Jan. 19 — but the players in the stands are itching to get going.

The first day of practice for the Wolf girls is Feb. 6, with the 10-game season running from Feb. 16-Mar. 27.

The schedule (as it looks today), with all home games tipping at 3:15:

Thur-Feb. 16 @ Chimacum
Thur-Feb. 23 Stevens
Mon-Feb. 27 Sequim
Thur-Mar. 2 @ Forks
Mon-Mar. 6 @ Blue Heron (Port Townsend)
Mon-Mar. 13 Chimacum
Thur-Mar. 16 @ Stevens
Mon-Mar. 20 @ Sequim
Thur-Mar. 23 Forks

The hard-court boys are about to come back.

Coupeville Middle School football wraps up this afternoon with a road game at Chimacum, and then five days later hoops begins.

The first day of practice is Monday, Nov. 7, with the first game three weeks after that.

Coaches Bob Martin (8th grade) and Randy King (7th) return to helm the ship.

CMS goes with a staggered schedule due to gym space, and the Wolf girls start their season Jan. 30.

For now, you can print and laminate the boys schedule below, while keeping an eye on the school or league websites for changes or updates.

All home games tip at 3:15 PM.

It’s never too early to talk about basketball.

While the start of the high school hoops season is still a month away — the first day of practice is Nov. 14 — you can get a jump-start by printing out and laminating the Wolf high school schedules.

Now, there’s always the chance things will get tweaked between now and then, but with CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith humming along these days, the schedules seem pretty set in stone.

A few things we can look forward to:

A lot of road games, with only 17 of 40 at home in 2016-2017.

The Wolf boys get nine home dates, while the girls will grace the CHS gym eight times.

But, both teams have full 20-game schedules, the first time that’s happened in several seasons.

The Coupeville girls, who are coming off their first trip to state in a decade, return to Friday Harbor on the first weekend of the season to defend their title at the Tip-Off Classic.

And while they will have a run of six straight road games at one point — combined with winter break, they don’t play at home between Dec. 11-Jan. 9 — they break more than even on 1A Olympic League games, with five of nine in town.

The boys, despite having one more home game total, actually have one less home game in league play, hitting the road for five of their nine conference bouts.

Finally, if you’re hoping for some doubleheader action, again, get used to hitting the road, as the Wolves have only a single two-for-one special on the home docket.

That comes Saturday, Dec. 10, when South Whidbey comes to Cow Town for a night of Island rivalry.

The schedules as they sit today:

Yep, they’re still going to Forks.

Keeping the longest drive of the season alive, schedules for Coupeville Middle School will pit the Wolves against five other schools this fall.

It’s a hodgepodge of mostly other Olympic League schools, with match-ups against two schools that feed other 1A schools (Port Townsend, Chimacum), two that feed 2A schools (Sequim, Stevens) and one far-flung non-league rival.

First day of practice is Tuesday, Sept. 6, coinciding with the first day of school.

As you fire up the laminating machine to preserve this schedule, be aware, things can always change at the last moment.

So, cross your fingers and make frequent visits to: http://coupeville.tandem.co/

So many athletes, so many events, so little time.

Having qualified nine boys and six girls for the 1A state track and field meet in Cheney next weekend (May 26-28), Coupeville High School coach Randy King will a busy bee.

Looking at what’s been posted by Eastern Washington University, which hosts the event, this would seem to be the schedule for the Wolves, with three caveats.

Athletes listed as alternates finished 4th at districts and are hopeful, but not guaranteed, of competing.

Throwing events only have finals.

Running events have both prelims and finals, and, while I’m listing both, obviously each Wolf is not guaranteed of reaching the finals.

Still, hope springs eternal and we have faith.
