The few, the proud, the local.

Now, only about 3% of the runners involved in the four races offered as part of Saturday’s Whidbey Island Marathon claimed Coupeville as their home town.

That just makes my work a tad bit easier, as, instead of listing all 1,243 runners who participated in the marathon, half marathon, 10K or 5K, I’m just focusing on the 38 from Cow Town.

Hey, this blog ain’t called Pocatello Sports, is it?

“Outta my way! Superstar comin’ through!!”

linds

Cold weather is no match for steel-willed Lindsey Roberts, who brought the gun show to town.

The air was brisk, but the running was brisker.

Ignoring the elements, brave runners hit the mean streets of Oak Harbor Friday for a 5K Resolution Run.

Among the participants were mother/daughter Wonder Twins Sherry and Lindsey Roberts, who carried Wolf pride with them.

Me? I was nice and warm in the Oak Harbor Cinemas, watching The Hateful Eight and appreciating that the water stains on the ceiling tiles in my theater had stayed unchanged for much of the 28 years I have now gone there.

Thanks for asking…

This weekend has been punctuated with unbelievable highs and unbelievable lows in Wolf Nation.

Friday and Saturday the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad, playing a true team game where every player mattered, where every young woman contributed, soared to new heights.

The Wolves won the Friday Harbor Tip-Off Classic, and the joy that emanated from every photo was about far more than just winning a couple of basketball games.

Those nine young women, who range from a precocious freshman to a wise senior, will remember this weekend long after their hoops careers end.

For the wins, yes. For the title, certainly.

But when the games end and real life begins, it will be the moments they had together, on the court, in the hotel room, on the bus, that will stay with them.

They will remember the shots they made, the defensive assignments they nailed, but they will also remember a moment in the locker room when, arms interlocked, they bounced and screamed as one.

“Who are we? WOLVES!!” “What are we? CHAMPIONS!!!”

They will remember the look in each others eyes at that moment, the sisterhood they had then and will have forever.

Years from now, they will be able to look back and tell their own daughters and sons about it.

It will be a part of their life, a slice of pure joy, for all their days.

And that is an important thing to remember tonight, as word filters out that Marlene Grasser, one of the most accomplished athletes in Coupeville history, has passed away after a battle with cancer.

The 1987 CHS grad was a four-sport star, a dominant athlete who was beloved by those she played with and against.

In an interview two years ago, when I was forcing her to look back on her prep exploits (she finally said yes, because she didn’t want to disappoint close friend and former teammate Sherry (Bonacci) Roberts) Marlene downplayed her records.

What she remembered, what she embraced, years later, was this:

I don’t remember awards, but do remember the fantastic experiences with my teammates.

My best memories are all involving team sports. I looked forward to practices every day and the games were a blast.

I loved my teammates and our mutual competitiveness and cohesiveness.

It is probably what I miss the most and was the hardest to let go of when I graduated.

I hope every current and future athlete in this town really listens to what Marlene said.

And I hope that they are able, every one of them, to embrace her words, live them and look back years later and feel exactly the same that she did.

This weekend is full of great joy. It is full of deep sadness.

A team ascended, a legend departed.

Two stories interwoven by a town, a sport and the heart and soul displayed by young women in different decades.

Grasser would have been proud of this edition of the Wolves and what they have attained, and what they will attain.

She would have loved seeing a team that includes Lindsey Roberts, the daughter of her one-time running mate, playing just like she and Sherry did back in the day.

And every one of those nine young women should be proud to wear the same uniform Grasser once did.

Marlene will be greatly missed, but her spirit will live on, and it will be reflected best every time another young woman steps onto a basketball court and embraces the joy she exhibited every day, every game.

The joy of playing. Of competing. Of walking side-by-side onto the court with friends and walking off with sisters.

BaYNE

Lauren Bayne planned ahead. Now that you’ve eaten turkey for three straight days, you’d pay extra for some crab legs, wouldn’t you?

So, it’s the day after the day after Thanksgiving, that time when you look in the frig and are like, “What? There are still leftovers in there?!?!”

You’re like, “Well, they’ve been in there for some time and they’re all stuck together…” and then you dive in and eat them all. You just do.

While I don’t have that 23rd slice of pie or the bite or two of cranberry sauce that got wedged in under the stuffing to offer, I do have some leftover photos.

Last Saturday was the Coupeville Booster Club’s biggest fundraiser event of the season — the annual Crab Feed and Auction — and photo whiz kids John Fisken and Ema Smith were there snapping away.

At the time, we ran photo essays by both of them, but, there were so many photos, we couldn’t use them all.

So now, a week later, I’m clearing out digital space and presenting to you the leftovers.

Just nuke them in the (mental) microwave and enjoy.

Lauren Grove (John Fisken photo)

Let’s mix it up.

Bringing an end to the fall ball season Sunday, Coupeville High School girls’ basketball players had a wild day.

First they got a win without taking the court, after Bellingham failed to show for the opener of what was supposed to be a doubleheader.

With time on their hands, and anxious to see some action, the Wolves instead teamed up with Sedro-Woolley, which was low on players.

With five Cubs and (eventually) six Wolves operating as a joint hoops squad, they held off a feisty, deep Anacortes squad, running and gunning to a 47-41 win.

Despite a few hurdles — neither team knew the others style of play for one — Sedroville clicked well, with the Wolves shining on the boards and clamping down on defense.

Junior gunner Kailey Kellner was money in the bank, banging away for 10 points, including a long-range trey.

She kept it easy on the statskeeper elsewhere, putting down a three under steals, assists and rebounds.

Mia Littlejohn (six points), Lindsey Roberts (five points, two rebounds), Lauren Grove (four points, two rebounds), Kalia Littlejohn (two points, three rebounds) and Sarah Wright (two rebounds and a steal she took coast-to-coast) rounded out the Wolf contingent.

After a brief break, the Wolves ended the day by facing off with their temporary teammates, pushing 2A Sedro to the end in a narrow 26-18 loss.

Coupeville was stellar on defense in the first half, but came out cold on offense after halftime. Battling through tired legs, the Wolves went scoreless for the first five minutes.

Taking a moment to regroup, and fired up by some words of wisdom from coaches Sherry Roberts and Aimee Bishop, CHS emerged from a timeout much more aggressive and rallied throughout the remaining time on the clock.

Kellner hit the boards like the reincarnation of Dennis Rodman, the Littlejohn sisters and Grove turned up the heat in the back court and the Wolves got steal-happy in the waning moments.

While it wasn’t quite enough to complete the comeback, the second-half surge greatly pleased Coupeville coaches and fans alike.

Mia Littlejohn paced the Wolves in the finale, popping for eight points, snaring three boards and pilfering two steals.

Kellner (six points, six rebounds, five steals), Grove (two points, four rebounds), Roberts (two points, seven rebounds), Kalia Littlejohn (four rebounds, two steals) and Wright (five rebounds) all chipped in as well.
