Lauren Bayne (John Fisken photos)

Lauren Bayne is a bit of a Renaissance woman.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, who celebrates a birthday today, is a whirlwind, always up to something, and always doing a pretty spectacular job at whatever she does.

On the soccer pitch she’s one of the hardest-working Wolves, a lock-down defender who helped anchor Coupeville’s often-stingy defense.

Put her on the track oval and there is little she can’t accomplish.

During her freshman season, Bayne Train, Jr. competed in eight different events, going all the way to districts in both the 3200 and high jump.

Once there she PR’d in the running event and just missed tying her best mark — which she had set while winning the event at sub-districts — while jumping.

When she’s not busy blazing a trail of athletic success, much like older brother Josh, Lauren can be seen snapping pics of fellow Wolf athletes.

Or working tirelessly behind the scenes at Booster Club events like the annual Crab Feed.

Or hanging out with her 10,000 friends.

Bayne is a bright, blazing ray of sunshine in Coupeville, and she comes off as smart, well-spoken, deeply caring to those she holds close and a young woman whose potential is limitless.

I always figure we should get in good with people like Lauren when they’re just starting, so that when she’s ruling the world, she might remember us benevolently.

So happy birthday, Miss Bayne.

I hope your cake day is a sweet one, but, then again, I hope all of your days are that way.

You make us better as a town for your presence, and I hope you always know how highly we all think of you.

Everyone in this pyramid can return this season. Top: Sylvia Hurlburt. Middle: Jared Helmstadter, Makana Stone. Bottom: (l to r) Lathom Kelley, Dalton Martin, Mitchell Losey.

These might be the Coupeville High School schedules you’re looking for.

Maybe.

You never know, as high school sports schedules, especially in the spring, are notorious for being ever-changing beasts.

As we sit six days out from the first day of practice for a new season (Monday, Feb. 29), I can say I’m at least 84.7% confident in what’s below.

Of course, even if these schedules stay exactly as they look now, weather is likely to play its usual role in reshaping things as we go forward.

But, as we wait for everything to play out, this is at least a start.

Maybe don’t laminate the schedules yet, though…

Ethan Kedrowski (John Fisken photo)

Ethan Kedrowski (John Fisken photo)

Ethan Kedrowski plays above his weight class.

During the football season, the Coupeville High School freshman was listed on the roster at five-foot-two and 120 pounds.

It would be safe to say that second number has little basis in reality.

But heart often trumps size, and it was very much true in Kedrowski’s case, as he made a solid impact on the field as a two-way warrior for the Wolves.

While he was a solid contributor for the JV squad, he also stepped up and recorded a tackle at the varsity level in a late-season home game against Concrete.

While that got him on the official stat chart, it was a play at the JV level (“getting a kick return for a touchdown”) that was his personal highlight.

Kedrowski, who plays receiver and defensive back, is a gridiron veteran, having put in eight years in the sport.

He’s been quick to make friends with teammates, and says that’s a big part of why he is drawn to the game.

“I like playing football because it is family,” Kedrowski said.

He is planning to run track in the spring — he competed in the 100, discus, high jump and long jump as a middle school athlete — and already has solid goals for his return to football.

“I want to get faster and stronger and to be a starter on JV,” Kedrowski said.

As he moves forward in his prep career, he draws inspiration both from family and from older Wolf players.

“My mom and dad and (senior Wolf lineman) JR Pendergrass,” he said when asked about role models. “They make me feel like I can do anything.”

Abby Parker: Supernova

Abby Parker: Supernova with a sweet spirit.

Abby Parker can do it all.

One of the sunniest, sweetest-natured, most talented young women in all of Cow Town, the Coupeville High School sophomore, who celebrates a birthday today, was indispensable last spring for the Wolf track team.

Had an event you wanted to fill? Parker was your woman.

During her freshman season, the list of events she competed in was extensive: 200, 800, 1500, 3000, discus, javelin, long jump and 4 x 400 relay.

And she wasn’t just filling a slot.

Most of her PR’s came late in the season, as Abby continually dropped time and threw further as the season unfolded.

She is one to watch as she heads into her second year of high school sports, and not just in track.

Parker is currently prepping for the start of volleyball season, and there is strong hope she’ll return to the hardwood in the winter.

As a middle school hoopster, she was a relentless ball-hawk with a bounce in her step.

And this is all fine and dandy.

Parker is a talented athlete, one who can often be seen competing in various running events with her aunt, Kathy O’Brien, on weekends.

But the real reason we are here to celebrate Abby’s birthday is she could step completely away from sports, and she’d still be pretty dang awesome.

A freshman Homecoming princess, the impression she gives off to the people on the sidelines is of a very smart, super-friendly young woman who is incredibly devoted to her friends and family.

Seeing her interact with others, watching her quietly sneak onto the softball sidelines after track practice and surprise-hug “second mom” Amy Briscoe, one word comes to mind.

Class.

Abby Parker is many things wrapped in one. Athlete. Student. Ray of sunshine.

But, most of all, she is classy, through and through.

As you celebrate your 16th birthday today, Abby, the world is yours. You are going to accomplish great things, on and off the athletic field, and none of us will be surprised when you do.

So, enjoy your day, Miss Parker, and always know how highly everyone — your family, your friends, your fans — regards you.

Sports are a perfect outlet for Nicole Lester.

The Coupeville High School freshman, who will be kicking off her school year as a member of the Wolf volleyball squad, plays multiple sports and has always been drawn in by the opportunity to spend time with friends, new and old.

“This season will be my second season playing (volleyball),” Lester said. “I started playing in eighth grade because it looked like a lot of fun and my friends played too, so I wanted to try.

“Things I love about volleyball are you make new friends and bond with the friends you already have, while working as a team.”

Lester, who also plays basketball and is trying to decide between track and softball for spring, is hard at work on fine-tuning her skill set for all of her activities.

“I don’t think there is a skill that I am the best at, but I am always motivated in working on all of my skills and not quitting when it gets hard,” Lester said. “My goal for this season is to make new friends and become a better player.

“I love to spend time working on basketball and volleyball skills,” she added. “I also love to work out.”

Away from the athletic stage, Lester enjoys country music and loves her some Sandy and Danny in “Grease.”

Family plays a big part in her life, and she knows she’ll always have fans behind her, no matter the sport.

“My mom and grandma really encourage me and help me become the person I am.”
