Kid’s got moves.

Coupeville High School junior Mitchell Carroll, who celebrates a birthday today, is one of the slickest Wolves on campus.

Whether on the football field or the track oval, the multi-sport threat can turn on the afterburners and leave his foes grasping at air.

On the gridiron, he played both ways as a sophomore.

On a team deep in talent, Carroll finished 8th in total yards and 18th in tackles, and those numbers could take a large spike if he gets more playing time this fall.

During track season, he flexed some muscle (as depicted in the photo montage above) to go with the speed.

Occasionally working as a sprinter and relay runner, Mitchell excelled as a jumper, making his mark in all three events (triple, long and high jump).

Plus, he still found time to be a member of the school’s Homecoming royalty and has been known to grace the Honor Roll.

Not bad, and he’s still got two years to set the school afire.

So, from all of us at Coupeville Sports, happy birthday, Mr. Carroll!

Keep aiming for excellence and none of us will be surprised when you go blazing by, like a bright, shining star.

Cause that’s what you are.

Jared Helmstadter

Jared Helmstadter

Jared Helmstadter’s grin is epic.

The kid always seems like he’s having fun, no matter what sport he’s playing at the moment.

And he plays a lot of sports.

A true three-sport star, Helmstadter plays tennis and basketball and runs track for Coupeville High School, and he does all three quite well.

To look at him now, a six-foot-one senior-to-be, you’d never guess that he’s a bit of a miracle.

Just two pounds when he was born prematurely at 26 weeks, Jared was not expected to survive.

To which he said, screw this, I got stuff to do. And off he went.

As he celebrates his birthday today, Jared has become one of the best athletes at CHS, and a better person.

A hard worker who seems well-liked by all his teammates, he sets an example for others by simply going out there, day after day, and putting every last ounce of himself on the line.

You can’t help but be a bit proud of him and all he has accomplished, whether you’re a friend, family member or, in my case, just an interested fan.

Some people you root for just a little bit harder.

Every time Jared steps on the court or the track oval, he earns that support.

Happy birthday, Mr. Helmstadter, today and for many years to come.

What, just because school is done, you thought we were done with awards season?

You thought wrong, skippy.

Putting the final stamp on the 2014-2015 Coupeville High School athletic year, the Wolf track team handed out letters and certificates Wednesday at a team awards banquet.

Juniors Makana Stone and Dalton Martin headlined, with each being honored as members of the All-Olympic League First Team.

Stone was honored for the 400, an event she finished 4th in at the state meet, while Martin was the league’s top male discus hurler.

He claimed 5th at state.

Special attention was also paid to Martin (discus) and sophomore Skyler Lawrence (shot put) for being district champs and the girls’ 4 x 200 relay squad.

That unit, comprised of Marisa Etzell, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Stone, finished 3rd at state and set a new school record (1:46.64) in the process.

Alex Turner (left) with dad ?.

Alex Turner (left) with dad Joseph.

With a new high school football season ahead of us, let’s take a look at some of the young men who will play for Coupeville High School for the first time this fall.

“I like hitting people!”

Before you think Alex Turner is being overly violent, he’s talking about the time he spends on the gridiron.

Turner, who will be a freshman at Coupeville High School in the fall, is entering his eighth year as a football player.

He was introduced to the sport by his dad, Joseph, and has loved the fast-paced, physical game ever since.

“I really don’t know what I’d be doing without football or my dad,” Turner said.

On the field, he lives for the big hit, and continues to put in the behind-the-scenes work necessary to make an impact once he straps on the gear.

“I’m fast, I can hit hard, I’m a good route runner,” Turner said. “I need to work on footing and reading the quarterback’s eyes and getting my wind up.”

Turner is working with a personal trainer on fine-tuning all of his moves.

“He’s helping with that right now; I want to be a better all-around player and to work hard every time I hit the football field.”

Football is not his only game, as Turner is a year-round athlete, having also played basketball and track during his time at Coupeville Middle School.

Away from sports, he spends most of his free time playing video games and working out.

Preparation for that moment when he steps on the field, clad in red and black, ready to lay down a string of hits that will put his name on the lips of Wolf fans everywhere.

Avalon Renninger

Avalon Renninger finished 5th in the discus.

Boom. Drop the mic and leave the stage.

Capping an unbeaten season in individual events, Lindsey Roberts won Cascade Conference titles in four events Wednesday at Shoreline.

The Coupeville Middle School eighth grader swatted the field at the league championships in the 200, 1600 and 100 hurdles, finishing the season 18-0 in solo races.

She also added a team title, joining up with Jasmine Nastali, Ashlie Shank and Emma Smith to cruise to a victory in the 4 x 100 relay.

Roberts, who won six events as a 7th grader, finished 20-2 overall this season.

She ran in four relay races, with the Wolves winning twice and finishing second twice.

Her 18 individual wins were twice as many as current Wolf junior Makana Stone, a four-time state medal winner, had as an eighth grader for CMS.

Coupeville won seven titles over the course of the two-day season-ending meet.

Danny Conlisk (1600), Chris Battaglia (discus) and Gabe Eck (long jump) won titles Monday and got their medals Wednesday.
