imageTime to step up to the line, CHS volleyball fans.

The Wolves are currently seeking pledges and donations for a Serve-A-Thon fundraiser they will be holding May 21.

The event will raise money to send the team to the Western Washington University summer camp.

All the pertinent info is including in the second photo above, so I’m not going to make you read it twice.

To help, go find a spiker, someone like Tiffany Briscoe or McKenzie Bailey or Sydney Autio (I’m pulling names up randomly, not playing favorites…) or contact Coupeville coach Breanne Smedley at (360) 635-2381.

P.S. — I am flat broke right now, so this article is my contribution. Yeah, yeah, yeah, move along, ladies.

Sarah Wright

Sarah Wright

I have seen the future, and the future is gonna kick your fanny.

Five months from now Sarah Wright will enter the hallways of Coupeville High School as a freshman and, unless I’m greatly mistaken, the next great Wolf star will be born.

Miss Wright, who celebrates a birthday today, could already be a star, if it wasn’t for this pesky “you can’t play high school varsity sports as a middle school student” rule.

Volleyball. Basketball. Softball. Plus, she’s already quite adept at goofing off for the cameraman when not in the heat of battle.

She is a natural. She is The Natural.

Sarah brings power, strength, confidence, calmness, exuberance and considerable talent to each sport, following in the footsteps of successful older brother Aaron, while being quite capable of blazing her own trail.

She reminds me of current CHS senior Hailey Hammer, who has played varsity for four years, in those same three sports, wracking up a sparkling collection of awards, letters and All-League honors along the way.

Now, I can’t speak for the Wolf coaches, but, having seen Wright play at the middle school level in all her sports, I can’t think of a single reason Wright isn’t part of the core of each team from day one.

She has the talent. She has the work ethic. She is coming, for all your awards and all your photo ops.

As she celebrates her birthday today, I want to wish her the best.

Sarah, your future is a bright one. I look forward to watching you write a new legend.

There is irrepressible. And then there is Ally Roberts.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, a fun-lovin’ ball of fire who bounces merrily from cheer to volleyball to horse competitions, has big footsteps to follow.

Almost every single member of her extended family was a standout athlete or an influential coach during their time as a Wolf.

I mean, Ally has a family reunion every time she goes in the CHS gym and looks up at the wall where the Athlete of the Year photos are hung up.

But you know what? The kid is blazin’ her own brightly-lit trail.

And she’s doing it her way, with a kind heart, a mega-watt smile and just a hint of feisty pluck.

Miss Roberts works hard and earns the ribbons and awards people hand her on a regular basis, but shows no signs of letting her growing stardom go to her head.

Today, as she hits the big 1-6, her future is as bright as anyone in the town she calls home.

Happy birthday, Ally!

May your day shine as brightly as you do every time I see you.

Madeline Strasburg gets mobbed after blasting a home run. (John Fisken photos)

Madeline Strasburg gets mobbed after blasting a home run. (John Fisken photos)

Getting stretched with Kacie Kiel.

Getting stretched with Kacie Kiel.

Afraid of the camera? Not likely.

Afraid of the camera? Not likely.

Pursuing a second career as a paparazzi.

Pursuing a second career as a paparazzi.

She is big time. Every time.

Coupeville High School senior Madeline Strasburg, AKA Maddie Big Time, earned that nickname by being at her best when it counted the most.

Feisty as all get out, hilarious, a vocal leader who thumped her teammates on the back in joy at times, and pulled them close and whispered quietly in their ear at others, she is like a walking, talking burst of pure energy.

I have covered a lot of athletes in 25 years of on-again, off-again sports coverage on Whidbey, but Maddie is in the 1% of the most electrifying I have witnessed on a daily basis.

Some athletes hum along, calm and serene, at the same level at all times.

That is not Strasburg.

During her remarkable three-sport (volleyball, basketball, softball) career at CHS, she hit huge lows and huge highs.

When she hit those lows, when she got good and pissed, is when she came flying back like few other Wolves ever have, or ever will.

When that look dropped on her face, you knew butt-whuppin’ time was comin’.

Elbow her? Knee her? Try and make her look bad?

She would crack you in half and then fly by, her glare o’ death replaced by the biggest smile you could possibly imagine.

Last year, during her junior basketball season, she did something I have never seen another high school athlete do.

Right at the tail end of the third quarter, she stole the ball, spun and fired up a buzzer-beater from almost half court that banked off the glass and dropped in.

Cue the Maddie dance to the bench, where she high-fived all of her teammates, her coaches and any spectators wandering by, regardless of whether she knew them or not.

So, great shot. It happens.

Except…

The Wolves then went on winter break and didn’t play another game for almost two weeks.

First game back, end of the third quarter, same time, same place … Maddie Big Time steals the ball, spins, fires from the same freakin’ spot on the court and banks in another buzzer-beater, then runs off screaming like a woman gone wild.

Two impossible shots, from the same place, the same angle, the same moment in the game … two weeks apart.

Damn.

Of course, it wasn’t just basketball.

She would jack home runs over the fence in softball, then spend time on defense hanging out in center field talking (loudly) to herself (and left fielder Haley Sherman, if she wandered too close), keeping up a running commentary on life.

Fearless as an athlete, and one of the quickest to embrace each and every chance to have her photo taken, Miss Strasburg has been a God-send for Coupeville Sports.

As she celebrates a birthday today, the future is limitless for this one.

In the words of John Locke on Lost, “Don’t tell me what I can’t do!!”

I fully believe Maddie will accomplish whatever she desires.

If she doesn’t want to do it, no amount of nagging will get her to change her mind.

But, if she wants something, she will go after it like a heat-seeking missile and woe unto those who are stupid enough to try and stop her.

She is whip smart, she is kind and caring and she has the heart of a lion.

Will she play ball in college? Will she become a coach herself one day (I think she’d be awesome at it)?

Or, will she throw everything away and travel the world, sporting dreadlocks and spreading the gospel of Maddie Big Time to the farthest reaches of the known world, her exuberant laugh trailing her?

Whatever she does, however she does it, she is going to be a huge, raging success. Of this I have no doubt.

And we’ll all look back, one day, and say, we were there at the beginning of the legend.

We were lucky enough to witness a young woman of great talent, grace and style rise up and begin to claim her place.

We were all witnesses to Maddie Big Time, and it was a lot of fun.

Payton Aparicio

Payton Aparicio: Big smile, big talent.

Payton Aparicio is a legacy.

Nearly everyone connected to her family has a strong athletic tradition, from parents Mitch and Tami (Stuurmans) Aparicio, to big sis Sydney and countless aunts and uncles (Marc Aparicio, Scott and Sarah Stuurmans, Kim (Stuurmans) Bepler, just to name a few) on both sides of the family.

Heck, grandpa Cecil Stuurmans is even one of the legendary coaches in Coupeville High School history.

So when Payton hit CHS as a freshman this year, she was following in big footsteps.

Which won’t be a problem.

Whether she hits big in her sports (she played volleyball in the fall and has already gotten some serious buzz after a week of tennis practice) or not, it’s likely she’ll remain the same sweet-natured, highly-intelligent young woman she has always been.

She’ll just have a huge, emotional fan club at every one of her contests.

As she gets ready for her first high school tennis match, a sport Sydney was a success in, Payton is also celebrating a birthday today.

So, from all of us in the cheap seats, happy birthday Miss Aparicio.

May all your days at CHS be as fun for you as they were for all your ten billion relatives.
