Maggie Crimmins

Maggie Crimmins

Like mother, like daughter? Not always.

Coupeville High School freshman Maggie Crimmins is following in mother Jodi (Christensen) Crimmins footsteps as an athlete with the Wolves, but at a slightly less-intense pace.

While her mom is legendary for being a wild woman on the basketball courts, a rebounding machine prone to ripping her own teammates arms off if they dared to touch a loose ball at the same time she did, Maggie is more of the Matthew McConaughey mind-set, content to bop along, smile on her face.

Which actually isn’t that big of a surprise, since her mom, off the court, is the single nicest person in the known universe.

For Maggie, who will be entering her third season as a volleyball player (“I like to play volleyball because it’s a lot of fun and I really like playing it with my friends”), finding a balance between fun and aggression is an on-going thing.

“I think a strength I have is my attitude, because I try to be as positive as possible and it makes volleyball a lot more fun than if I was upset or angry throughout the game,” Crimmins said. “I think something I need to work on is being more aggressive and going for the ball a little more.

“I’m not extremely competitive, but I think I should try harder to be,” she added. “My parents have given me advice on being more aggressive, and my friends have helped me with different things I needed to work on. I still need work, but I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better because of them.”

She’s still seeking a permanent position on the court, but, wherever her coaches plug her in, they know they’ll get a hard worker with a sunny attitude.

“I don’t really have a specific position yet, but I usually play in the back row on the right or left,” Crimmins said. “My goals for this season are to work on becoming more aggressive, and to get better at the things I’m struggling with.”

Crimmins is planning to add a second sport to her arsenal in the spring with tennis, while away from the sports arena, she is devoted to “The Hunger Games” and One Direction.

A strong student as well, she nimbly balances books with sports.

“I really like language arts and science,” Crimmins said. “They’re interesting to me, and I have fun in those classes.”

Sydney Autio

Sydney Autio

Sydney Autio made her move last year.

Just a sophomore at the time, she became a key member of both the Coupeville High School volleyball and girls’ tennis squads, beaming out her mega-watt smile as she soared in both sports.

On the volleyball court, Autio took over at a key spot, holding down the setter position for the Wolves, directing traffic and setting up her teammates with her precision passing.

When spring rolled around she went a step or two further, advancing to the postseason, where she teamed up with senior Sydney Aparicio to form a deadly doubles duo known as Sydney Squared.

Oh yeah, and she also did double duty at times, scraping out the time to be part of the Wolf cheer squad while still competing in another sport at the same time.

With two years left in her high school career, the sky is the limit for the talented, bubbly Autio.

As she celebrates her birthday today, let’s take the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of her fan club.

And now is the right time to do so, because if she continues to play with the passion and joy she’s exhibited so far, that fan club will be very, very crowded by the time she reaches her various Senior Night festivities.

Happy birthday, Sydney.

You’re a joy to watch play and here’s hoping your fun never stops.

Briscoe, pre-painful injury.

Briscoe, pre-painful injury.

Superstar down! Superstar down!!

A nasty-looking basketball injury has felled Coupeville High School three-sport athlete Tiffany Briscoe a mere week before the start of practice for a new volleyball season.

The injury happened Sunday during an open gym for basketball.

The sophomore got her foot caught and rolled it, with the offending leg making an audible popping noise.

Now operating under the watchful eye of mom Amy Briscoe, Tiffany is relying on ice, elevation and crutches and staying off the foot.

But, even with visible evidence of the injury, as her foot turns multiple colors, getting the tough-nosed teen to admit she’s in pain takes a bit of wrangling.

“Just keeping an eye on it for now,” Amy Briscoe said. “Yeah, it is nasty looking, but getting her to admit she’s hurt is impossible!”

Stock up on gas.

If you’re the type of person who wants to see every Coupeville Middle School football game and volleyball match this year, you’re going to spend a lot of time driving.

Between the two teams, they’ll be away from home for 12 of 16 contests.

Wolf football is home just once, while the spikers welcome another team to their gym three times.

Add in a trip to Langley for each team, and both CMS squads will still head off-Island more than 50% of the time.

The schedules:

FOOTBALL:

Sept. 3 @ Sultan (jamboree)
Sept. 10 @ King’s
Sept 17 Sultan
Sept. 24 @ Port Townsend
Oct. 1 @ Langley
Oct. 8 @ Granite Falls
Oct. 15 @ Sultan

VOLLEYBALL:

Sept. 18 @ Langley (jamboree)
Sept. 22 @ Langley
Sept. 25 Sultan
Sept. 29 @ King’s

Cow Town is gonna be besieged by tons of folks this weekend.

The 50th edition of the annual Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival-o-rama runs Saturday and Sunday and Race the Reserve, which earns money for the CHS Class of 2015, starts at the crack o’ dawn Saturday.

With all those out-of-towners wandering around, you want to be put on a good show. And part of that, I’m told, is to have a clean car, one that holds up under public scrutiny.

Personally, my car (“White Thunder”) can not, and will not, be cleaned, as the moss, dirt and strange brown splotches (which seem to be moving…) are about all that holds the vehicle together.

But you? You should get your car cleaned, pronto.

So, how handy is that the Wolf volleyball players are taking advantage of the situation and holding a car wash Saturday at Whidbey Island Bank on N. Main?

The event runs from 10-2.

Much shouting at passing cars will take place, and, if you don’t slow down, a random volleyball or two may be spiked through your open car window to get your attention. I hope…

Anyway, now you have no excuse for a dirty car.

Me? I still have plenty of excuses, thank you very much.
