If you plan it, they will volunteer.

Coupeville High School athletes showed up strong Saturday for Race the Reserve, the biggest fundraiser for the CHS senior class.

Wolf volleyball came with a big crew, but ultimately it was the CHS cheer squad which topped all fall sports teams in terms of total volunteers.

For their efforts, Jennifer Morrell’s cheerleaders captured the “Golden Shoe Award,” and will also snag an assortment of homemade cookies.

Savina Wells, one of Coupeville’s best and brightest, has moved to Florida. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Savina Wells has taken her talents to South Beach.

Or, at least somewhere close to there.

A family move to Florida will subtract the rising sophomore from Coupeville High School sports rosters, bringing an end to a stellar run in Wolf uniforms for the youngest child of Lyle and Katy Wells.

The move also affects Cow Town’s teaching depth, as Katy Wells was an Elementary Paraeducator for the Coupeville School District.

Savina, who followed in the footsteps of Ulrik and Izzy, who both graduated from CHS, has been at the forefront of Coupeville athletics since she was old enough to walk.

In the early days, you’d be at one of her siblings’ games, and there would be Savina doing a series of never-ending cartwheels, all while never losing the bag of chips she was bringing back from the snack bar.

The Wells sisters fuel up before wreaking havoc on the diamond.

Once she was old enough to capture the spotlight, she was a gold-plated star from day one.

Did I think about calling Savina “The Chosen One?”

Possibly.

Did I show restraint for once, though, and not refer to her as that in print until now?

Definitely, though it was a tough battle with the shameless hype master living inside me.

A standout in little league and youth sports, Savina made her high school basketball debut as a precocious 8th grader and was second on the team in scoring during a pandemic-shortened season.

Through her first year-and-half of high school hoops, she racked up 133 points, leaving her 85th all-time among Wolf girls for a program which started in 1974.

Older sister Izzy graduated with 204 points to her credit and is #58 all-time.

Soaring above the competition.

Savina was also a varsity volleyball and softball player for CHS during her freshman year.

On the volleyball court, she registered 70 kills, 47 digs, five block assists, and 42 service aces in her debut, ranking #2 on the team in aces and #3 in kills.

When spring rolled around this year Savina was Coupeville’s starting catcher, where she hauled in pitches from her sister.

The lanky fab frosh was a dangerous hitter and a fleet-footed runner, cracking a steady string of extra-base hits for a Wolf squad which went 16-3.

Savina hauls in another strike from big sis Izzy.

Coupeville has taken a hit in the offseason from family moves, losing four talented athletes in the prime of their prep careers.

Along with the Wells clan moving to Florida, other Wolves departing include sisters Olivia and Amaya Schaffeld and three-sport star Mikey Robinett.

Lanie and Steve Kiel, forever rockin’ the gym. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

A celebration of life has been set for Lanie Kiel.

The much-loved Wolf Mom, who treated her daughter’s teammates as additional children of her own, bestowing hugs and non-stop encouragement, passed away in March after a ferocious battle with cancer.

Lanie’s soaring spirit and gentle kindness will be honored in an event set for the Coupeville Rec Hall.

The celebration will run from 4:00-8:00 PM Friday, Aug. 19.

“In true Lanie style we will honor her with a simple gathering with light refreshments, good music, and great people,” said daughter Kacie.

Attendees are asked to wear pink or Hawaiian prints.

If you have any photos, videos, or song requests for the slideshow, they can be sent to katiekiel13@gmail.com.

Coupeville High School volleyball players bond at a team camp in Bellingham. (Photos courtesy Cory Whitmore)

The heat is on.

With current summer temps at least slightly warmer than before, it’s the perfect time for volleyball players to fine tune their skill sets.

The Coupeville High School spikers showed up and showed out in Bellingham this week, with 11 Wolves participating in a camp run by Western Washington University.

The chance to get floor time, and build a team bond while doing so, is huge.

“As always, Western Washington runs a terrific team camp,” said CHS varsity coach Cory Whitmore.

“We have developed a strong relationship with them, and it is really beneficial to visit them year-after-year.”

Six of 11 Wolves were making their debut at the WWU camp.

Seniors Alita Blouin, Maddie Georges, Taygin Jump, Ryanne Knoblich, and Jill Prince were joined by junior Grey Peabody and sophomores Mia Farris, Jada Heaton, Katie Marti, Madison McMillan, and Lyla Stuurmans.

“I was incredibly impressed with the group’s ability to handle the strains of camp,” Whitmore said.

“It was much more about learning to communicate productively and blending the group than any one particular skill,” he added.

“With that in mind, I’m really happy with our consistency – the communication strategies worked, and the energy remained high.”

Another day, another round of spikes.

While Whitmore and Coupeville JV coach Ashley Menges were on hand, the duo allowed WWU players to largely take the reins, while giving Wolf players a chance to fend for themselves a bit.

“Coach Ashley and I did a lot of stepping back to let the group problem-solve and look to each other for strength and stability and I’m really encouraged by our growth in that area,” Whitmore said.

“They can be very proud of a hard-fought week that will provide them with a strong foundation to build upon in the fall.”

While all of the Wolves had a well-earned moment or two in the spotlight, Knoblich was chosen to receive the Camp Coaches Award.

“Ryanne has grown so much in a year’s time and really anchors a lot of responsibility on the team now,” Whitmore said. “So, we were so happy to see the coaches recognize the impact she has on this team.

“Definitely looking forward to our fall season.”

On to fall!

Let ’em spike the dirt from your vehicle.

Coupeville volleyball players will be armed with brushes and hoses this coming weekend, holding a car wash fundraiser.

The event goes down at Ebey Academy starting at 10 AM — just down the street from the annual Lion’s Club garage sale — and helps the spikers pay for volleyball camps and related activities.

Pro tip — keep an eye out this week, as several of the players have been spotted out in front of Prairie Center Market, pre-selling tickets.
