Big meet, strong start

They ran with the big boys (and girls).

The Coupeville High School cross country team kicked off a new season Saturday with an appearance at the 42nd annual Carl Westling Invitational in Langley.

A day before, a storm ripped across Whidbey with ferocious winds turning the power off for much of the island.

But Saturday was fairly tranquil, offering the Wolves and first-year coach Paige Spangler a chance to strut their stuff.

Coupeville sent three girls to the line in the varsity race, while fielding a full seven-man varsity team and two runners in the JV rumble.

The Wolf boys held up very well, finishing 11th out of 13 teams in their division, despite the other squads all repping schools with larger student bodies.

Coupeville was the lone 2B team, with eight 1A schools, three 2A schools, and 4A Mariner also competing.

2A Cedarcrest claimed the team title, while Will Geisen of 2A Bellingham captured the individual crown, covering 5,000 meters in 16 minutes, 51.60 seconds.

On the girls side, Bellingham was the top team, with Kayla Aalpoel of 1A Meridian the first runner across the line in 19:20.70.

All together, the invitational featured runners from 29 high schools, while five middle schools competed in their own races.

Young harriers bolt to glory

“They did awesome! We may be small in numbers but we’re large in heart!!!”

A new season of Coupeville Middle School cross country dawned Saturday, and brought all the joy back to Wolf coach Elizabeth Bitting’s heart.

A day after rain and wind (mostly wind) buffeted Whidbey Island, the weather cooperated, and 10 CMS runners got their first chance to step to the line at a real competition.

The event was the Carl Westling Invitational in Langley, the 42nd edition of Whidbey’s premier gathering of harriers.

“What a beautiful day for the first race of the Coupeville Middle School cross country season!,” Bitting said. “No rain, no wind, and we had power!

“There were nerves, anxious feet, lots of questions, and loads of PR’s!!!”

The Wolf girls were up first, and her runners immediately made Bitting proud.

“Once that starting gun went off all nerves, doubts and fears faded, and all we saw were some determined runners!,” she said.

“I am so proud of what each of these runners accomplished at this, their first race,” Bitting added. “I cannot wait to see what the season brings! GO WOLVES!!!”

Or at least pretty close.

The revived Coupeville High School cross country program invaded the 41st Carl Westling Invitational in South Whidbey Saturday, one of 40 teams to make the trek.

The Wolf harriers, in their second season of bringing the school’s program back to life, sent 15 runners to the line, with a complete scoring team in both the girls and boys varsity races.

Coupeville’s runners and their (many, many) compatriots covered 5,000 meters in Langley, while competing in both varsity and JV races.

They’re off.

The middle school cross country season officially opened for Coupeville Saturday, as Wolf coach Elizabeth Bitting took 16 runners down to Langley for the 41st Carl Westling Invitational.

The Wolves, who ran 1.7 miles, placed four runners in the top 20, with Hank Milnes busting into the top 10 with a 9th place finish.

For the first time, middle school races now include 6th grade runners along with 7th and 8th graders, as state officials approved the move for track and cross country.

While she didn’t have her full team, as a few athletes haven’t put in enough practices, and illness is creeping in to the school system, Bitting came away pleased with the first performance.

“With a handful of up and comers, the boys side is setting itself up real well for longevity in cross country for years to come,” she said. “On the girls side the depth will come, and they are setting themselves up for a solid team.

“All were happy with their performance today; I was ecstatic!,” Bitting added. “They performed beautifully! It was an awesome morning for some great running!!”

Trail blazers carve successful path!!

The cross country revival is operating at full force.

Coupeville relaunched its program this fall after a two-decade absence, and Saturday marked the first time both the high school and middle school teams competed together.

The place to be was Langley, where the 40th annual Carl Westling Invitational attracted hundreds of harriers.

While the Wolf high school runners were competing in their third meet, it was the debut for their younger counterparts.

And it went off very well, as three CMS runners — Carolyn Lhamon, Cole White and Claire Mayne — brought home medals for placing in the top 15 finishers.

“OH MY GOODNESS IT WAS SO FUN!!!!!,” said slightly-excited CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “They all did amazing!!! Great attitudes!! I am SO PROUD of each of them!

“They ran so strong, all finished hard, this is one happy, super impressed, super proud coach!!!!!! They are all truly amazing!”
