She sent a whole pack to the start line.

Coupeville High School cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting had 25 runners compete Saturday at Civic Stadium in Bellingham, solid proof of how much the Wolf harrier program has grown.

The event was the 14th annual Gear Up Northwest XC Preview, hosted by Sehome High School, with 49 teams sending runners careening across the two-mile course.

Keeping things unique, the meet has runners largely compete against athletes from their own class — freshmen vs. freshmen, seniors vs. seniors, and so on.

Seniors (l to r) Landon Roberts, Thomas Strelow, and Carson Field are ready to go.

With so many runners, some of the Wolves were first timers, while always were returning to the site of past glory.

“What a great day!” Bitting said. “So many amazing PR’s!!!!”

Eight of the 11 Coupeville runners who had previously competed at the meet smashed their top times this time around.

“The most impressive PR was Reagan (Callahan). She went from a 20:41 last season to a 17:55 unofficial time this season,” Bitting said.

The Wolfpack invades Bellingham.

CHS senior Thomas Strelow knocked off almost a minute from last year, dropping from 13:34 to a hair under 12:44, while Kenneth Jacobsen nabbed Coupeville’s lone top 10 individual finish.

“Today’s race helped me a lot in seeing where each runner is and how they should be training,” Bitting said. “So many fun firsts for so many, (and a) shout out to Coach (Amber) Wyman for joining us.

“She is always so helpful!”

Coupeville returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 21, but the bus trip will be a far shorter one.

The Wolves stay on Whidbey, heading south to Langley for the 45th annual Carl Westling Invitational.

Ava Lucero runs this joint, and she has the starter’s pistol to prove it.

The season is underway … in a wet way.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad traveled to Maple Valley Saturday to participate in the Tahoma Co-Ed Relays at Lake Wilderness State Park.

The event, which drew 41 teams, was a jamboree, so official times weren’t posted, but it was a great learning experience for the Wolves.

“The season started with a splash!” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “A splashing blast!!”

Runners competed in groups of five, with a mix of male and female runners, and each harrier covering 3,000 meters.

The course was a mix of surfaces, with pavement, grass, trails, and yes, water, to traverse.

Having had their first taste of competition, the Wolves return to action next Saturday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Bellingham for the Gear Up Northwest XC Preview hosted by Sehome.

Elizabeth Bitting’s pack is on the prowl.

The Coupeville High School boys’ cross country team, which returns all seven runners from the squad which finished 10th at last year’s state meet, is garnering some preseason hype.

The Wolves sit at #6 among 2B/1B schools in a preseason poll released Thursday by the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association.

That puts them one slot ahead of Northwest 2B/1B League archrival Mount Vernon Christian.

Not bad for a CHS harrier program which only returned in 2017 after a two-decade absence.

The Wolves are not the only team from The Rock to get some love, as South Whidbey’s boys are currently ranked #4 among 1A schools by WSCCCA.

But this blog is called Coupeville Sports, so we’re focusing on Cow Town, where state meet veterans Carson Field, Landon RobertsEzekiel AllenGeorge SpearThomas StrelowKenneth Jacobsen, and Axel Marshall are all back in action.

And while the Coupeville girls might not be ranked as a team (yet), they also boast a two-time state meet qualifier in Noelle Western.

“I’m Katie Marti, fool. I will wreck your pitcher and laugh all the way to Disneyland.” (Photos by Jackie Saia, JohnsPhotos.net, and assorted parents)

The final run begins.

With the start of fall sports practices this week, athletes from the Coupeville High School Class of 2025 begin their senior seasons.

And yet, in a shameless bid to make Wolf Moms cry (happy) tears, we present evidence that these upperclassmen were just lil’ kids a moment ago.

Pamela Morrell (left) dreams of the moment when she will be a high school senior cheerleader. That day? It’s today.

“I’m gonna set this court on fire!”

The eye healed, but his love for the sport continued to blossom.

“I am a one-woman tornado of terror on the diamond, and I’m coming for all your titles!!”

The wrecking crew.

Birth of a flamethrower.

A young Jada Heaton, making catches that shocked even her hat.

Ember Light and Hunter Bronec were freshmen royalty. Can they snag a repeat as seniors?

“Oh, they’re gonna need a first aid kit when I’m done with them!!”

“This is our court now, ya old farts!!”

“Me? I crank homeruns and take names all day, baby.”
