Wolves ready to run up that hill

“Here we go again!!!!”

A new season of middle school cross country kicks off Thursday, and Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting couldn’t be more excited.

“Would you take a look at the roster!” she said. “It’s a big one!! This warms my heart.”

While the roster may ebb and flow a bit before the first meet, Bitting is currently expecting 33 athletes for the first day of practice.

The highlight for the Wolves arrives Oct. 12, when CMS hosts its first-ever home middle school meet at Fort Casey Park.

For anyone wondering, Coupeville’s coach is a perfect hype machine for the event.

“The course is, of course, magnificent, beautiful, breathtaking, jaw dropping, the most scenic in the league!

“But I am biased,” Bitting added with a big smile.

CMS spiker coach departs

New year, new adventures.

Coupeville Middle School volleyball coach Katie Kiel has left the Wolf bench after a season.

The change is due to her now living and working in California, which puts a pretty big crimp in commuting daily to Whidbey Island.

Kiel, a 2013 Coupeville grad who played volleyball and basketball for the Wolves, returned to her alma mater last year.

She joined fellow coach Cris Matochi in bringing the CMS spiker program out of a pandemic shutdown and was a lively presence in the gym.

Whether working with young spikers on a one-on-one basis or providing the local press with stats, info, and insights, Kiel had a very-positive impact.

CMS volleyball kicks off a new season with the first day of practice Sept. 12.

Kiel’s job has been posted, and Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith is hustling to find a replacement to work with Matochi.

CMS runners, spikers rev up for new year

Two on deck, one off the schedule.

Coupeville Middle School is offering cross country and volleyball this fall but has discontinued its boys soccer program and is directing interested players to local rec leagues.

Practice for CMS runners begins Sept. 1, with the spikers hitting the court Sept. 12.

The fall season plays out through the end of Oct., then is followed by basketball in the winter and track in the spring.

With middle school volleyball, the plan is to have players in grades 6-8 divided across three teams by talent level.

Matches played Monday or Tuesday will operate with level one playing first, followed by two and three.

The schedule flips and goes 3-2-1 when matches are contested on Wednesday or Thursday.

Both sports welcome back returning coaches, with Elizabeth Bitting mentoring the harriers and the duo of Cris Matochi and Katie Kiel calling the shots for volleyball.

Come run in the sun

It’s a sneak preview of what’s to come.

Coupeville Middle School students headed into grades 6-8 are invited to participate in a free running clinic which will give athletes and parents a feel for what the upcoming cross country season will look like.

There are actually two clinics available, with one going July 18-20 and the other July 22-23.

Each day’s events will begin at 8:30 AM, using a variety of locations.

The clinics begin at the school track behind Coupeville Elementary School and will conclude with a visit to Fort Casey to walk, then run the middle school cross country course.

“If you have a friend who you think might be interested, invite them to come!” said CMS cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“Parents, grandparents, caregivers are welcome to join and walk/run/jog the same routes,” she added. “I hope to see you soon!”

Young Wolves cap oval season

“Ready to launch!”

The meet which never ends finally ended.

The two-day Cascade League Track and Field Championships — which has a five-day gap between sessions — wrapped up Wednesday at Lakewood, giving Coupeville Middle School a final chance to impress.

The Wolves came away with a pair of individual wins, thanks to 8th grader George Spear (800) and 6th grader Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump), with the team garnering 19 PR’s.

The victories come on the heels of a win in the 1600 by 8th grader Malachi Somes during the opening session May 26.

The seven-team meet brings an official end to the season for Coupeville and its compatriots.
