Zing them with aces, then smash them with kills.

Controlling play both at the service stripe and the net, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad pounded host Granite Falls Thursday night.

Rolling to a 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 win, the Wolves lift their record to 3-0 in North Sound Conference play, 4-1 overall.

Coupeville struck from every direction, rolling up 15 service aces, with Alita Blouin and Abby Mulholland registering four apiece, while also piling up 30 kills.

Kylie Chernikoff, who has been brutalizing foes of late, paced CHS with 14 kills, with Ivy Leedy chipping in with seven put-aways of her own.

The rest of the kills were spread out across the roster, with Lucy Tenore (2), Taygin Jump (2), Heidi Meyers (2), Mulholland (2), and Anya Leavell (1) also connecting.

Maddie Georges ran the Wolf offense, doling out a team-high 10 assists, while Jump (12), Blouin (11), Chernikoff (10), and Meyers (6) all rang up big numbers on digs.

The Wolf young guns, who have won three in a row, have a fairly quick turnaround, as they return to action Saturday, when they travel to Orcas Island for a non-conference tilt.

Flaky dough. Delicate pears. The perfect touch of sweetness, without being cloying.

What? Yes, of course they played tennis Thursday afternoon in Coupeville, and yes, I’ll tell you about it.

But first, a big shout-out to University Prep coaches, who handed out complimentary, crafted-in-Seattle pastries after the match was done.

You sirs, are the real heroes, and the “working press” thanks you.

I may even have to reconsider the whole “bitchin’ and whining about private schools” stance I so love to traffic in.

Maybe. Possibly. We’ll see.

It may take me a while to warm up to schools like King’s and Archbishop Murphy, but U Prep, you had me at “free, delicious pastry.”

Oh, and the tennis match which preceded my sultry taste-bud tango with my unexpected delish dessert? It went about as expected.

U Prep, which is almost always in play for glory at the state tourney, won 5-0 to stay atop the battle for Emerald City League supremacy.

But public school Coupeville, which sits at 1-8 headed into a Friday home match with The Bush School, a team the Wolves beat earlier this season, put up some nice resistance.

Most of it came in two matches – #1 singles and #3 doubles.

U Prep’s top gun, Tyler Wurzer, finished third at the state tourney as a sophomore, and, if anything, his game has just gotten more impressive during his junior campaign.

The Puma pounder slapped winners from every direction, combining big power with uncanny touch, and yet Coupeville’s Drake Borden didn’t go down without delivering some impressive shots of his own.

One point in particular was a big fan-pleaser, as the duo exchanged knockout punches from the baseline.

With Wurzer drifting ever so slightly to his left, Borden lashed a long shot to the deepest, darkest corner in the right, and the ball clipped the last little bit of open space, biting the line, then spinning away into the fence for a winner.

It earned a quick acknowledgement from Wurzer, who smiled ever so slightly, and a big roar from Borden’s loyal rooting section, led by CHS coach Ken Stange, who jumped up and punched the air.

The closest match came at #3 doubles, where first-year players Miles Davidson and Logan Martin, who are still in the trial-run part of their tennis careers, fought back to take the second set and force a match-deciding tiebreaker.

While the young Wolves eventually fell to their more-experienced foes, they did so only after putting in their best performances of the season, with both coming up with sweet work at the net.

Coupeville High School volleyball is nearly perfect this fall, with varsity (5-0), JV (3-1), and C-Team (3-0) combining for a sizzlin’ 11-1 record.

Three of those wins came Tuesday night, as the Wolves defended the honor of their home courts, swatting arch-rival South Whidbey.

As the wins played out, wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken bounced between the CHS and CMS gym to capture a collection of pics, showcasing both on-court action and fan reaction.

There’s many reasons the South Whidbey High School girls soccer squad is undefeated this season, and all were on display Tuesday during a 4-0 win at Coupeville.

The Falcons have an explosive offense, a lock-down defense and high-caliber players at every position.

As it heads into a first-place showdown with King’s Thursday, South Whidbey sits at 4-0 in North Sound Conference play, 7-0 overall.

Coupeville, which lost its top scorer to injury in the first half of the season opener, is headed in the right direction, showing growth across the board, even if the record doesn’t always reflect it.

With the loss to their Island rivals, the Wolves sit at 0-4 in league play, 0-6-2 overall.

That puts them a game off of a playoff berth with six conference tilts to go, as they are chasing Granite Falls (1-3, 3-5), who they face Thursday on the road, and Sultan (1-3, 1-5-2).

King’s (4-0, 6-2) sits in a tie with South Whidbey atop the league standings, while Cedar Park Christian (2-2, 5-3) holds the middle.

Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson knew Tuesday’s game would feature probably the toughest foe on the schedule, but he came away pleased with a lot of what he saw from his team.

“I felt pretty good with our effort,” he said. “A few mental errors cost us, but
mostly a great effort and continued improvement.”

JV blanked:

No score was reported, but word on the street was that South Whidbey shut out Coupeville, which leaves the Wolf young guns sitting at 0-3 in league, 0-4 overall.

Every game a lesson.

The final score wasn’t what they were hoping for Wednesday, but there are better days ahead for the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer team.

For one thing, the Wolves, now 1-3 after taking a 7-0 loss at Northshore Christian Academy, get to stay home for a bit.

Coming off of a three-game road trip, CMS now gets three straight home games.

The Wolves host Lakewood (Oct. 7), Granite Falls (Oct. 9), and get another crack at Northshore (Oct. 14).

Wedneday’s match-up pitted Coupeville against the best team in their four-school conference, and it made for an uphill battle.

“We played a tough team,” CMS coach Reese Cernick said. “We need to work on getting to the ball first.

“(Goalies) William (Davidson) and Zane (Oldenstadt) saved plenty of goals, but could not block them all,” he added. “Our back line was under constant bombardment as Northshore’s offense was dominating.”

The Wolves managed to put together a couple of runs at the goal, but couldn’t get the soccer gods to smile on any of their shots.

While he would have liked a score or two, Cernick praised the play of his offense.

“I felt our passing in the second half was a bit better,” he said. “We were more aggressive in the second half as well.

“I look forward to playing them again because they are a worthy opponent.”
