Results?? We have results!

Everything comes to those who wait.

Five days after the first middle school track meet of the season, results have appeared on the internet, and I’m here to pass them on to the world at large.

Opening day, which was April 27, featured Coupeville hosting King’s, Langley, and Northshore Christian Academy.

The first title of the season for CMS went to Easton Green, who won the boys high jump with a mark of four feet, seven inches.

Amaya Schaffeld (100), Lillian Ketterling (800), George Spear (800), and Malachi Somes (1600) captured second-place finishes for the Wolves.

Coupeville returns to action this Wednesday, May 4, when it travels to Langley for a meet which also includes Sultan and Lakewood.

Runnin’, gunnin’, reachin’ for the stars

Every meet from here on out gets bigger.

With the regular season in the books, the Coupeville High School track and field team turns its energy to the postseason.

First up is the Northwest 2B/1B League meet Wednesday in La Conner, followed by district, bi-district, and state meets.

With the pandemic having wreaked havoc on prep sports, this is the first season since 2019 where track stars will have a chance to participate in a full postseason.

As the Wolves (and their many foes) prep for the stretch run, a look at top times, heights, and distances among 2B schools reveal a fair share of Coupeville athletes.

For the moment, the CHS girls 4 x 200 relay team slips out of the top 10, having been passed in just the last week.

But, other than that, the Wolves retain all of their other spots in the rankings, with the boys 4 x 100 unit moving up a rung and Dominic Coffman cracking the top 10 in the high jump.

Splash Sisters rule the water

The Splash Sisters are back at it.

Coupeville’s Sophie and Lucy Sandahl shone brightly this weekend, helping Seattle Pacific University rowing teams to strong finishes at a major meet.

The duo was at Lake Natoma in Gold River, California for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships.

Sophie was in the bow of her boat as SPU’s #2 varsity eight crew won their grand finals race Sunday, fending off runner-up Pacific Lutheran University by a crisp 22 seconds.

The Falcons crossed the 2,000-meter course in seven minutes, 29.62 seconds.

Meanwhile, lil’ sis Lucy was the coxswain for SPU’s novice four boat, which claimed second in Saturday’s heats — on dad Michael’s birthday.

Her first-year crew, repping an NCAA D-II school, then went oar to oar with top-level D-1 schools Sunday, finishing sixth in the grand finals.

SPU returns to action next Saturday, May 7, when it participates in the Windermere Cup on the Montlake Cut in Seattle.

That event is hosted by the University of Washington and celebrates the opening of boating season in our state.

One more swing to fill the stat sheet

The bat gets a rest.

After swinging a hot stick all season, Coupeville grad Joey Lippo officially reached the end of his sophomore season playing baseball at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

The Owls dropped a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend, falling to Thomas College 15-3 and 4-3 Saturday, before succumbing 12-2 and 4-1 Sunday to New England College.

UMPI finishes 6-29, which is a bump in games played and games won from last year’s pandemic-altered 1-17 campaign.

Lippo went out lashing, picking up four hits and three RBI in his final weekend of play.

The former Wolf three-sport star was one of just two Owls to play in all 35 games, and he led UMPI in at-bats (123), runs (31), triples (2), RBI (22), walks (14), and stolen bases (8).

Skyy Lippo’s twin brother was second on his squad in hits (39), batting average (.317), on-base percentage (.386) and home runs (1).

Joey played most of the season in the outfield, gunning down runners with long throws from the shadows, but he also pitched in three games for the Owls, striking out four across five innings of work.
