JV spikers ace Concrete

Madison McMillan had the magic touch.

Firing off 19 service aces Tuesday — most by any Coupeville High School spiker this season — the Wolf freshman sparked the JV volleyball team as it crushed visiting Concrete.

The CHS young guns combined to pepper the Lions with 33 aces overall during a 25-10, 25-11, 25-20 romp.

The win lifts Coupeville to 6-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-1 overall.

For half a second it looked like Tuesday’s match might be a close one, with Concrete jumping out to a 3-1 lead in the opening set.

Don’t believe first impressions.

Grey Peabody broke the brief spell, winning a tip war at the net to reclaim serve for the Wolves, and then McMillan went nuclear.

The fab frosh won 13 straight points on her serve, spinning aces left, right, deep, and just over the net – with one laser shot exploding upward off a Concrete player’s arm to tattoo the unlucky Lion in the face.

Turning a 3-2 deficit into a 14-3 lead, McMillan cracked things wide open, and the Wolves ran free after that.

Mia Farris and Jada Heaton had shorter, but still very-successful runs at the line in the first set, while McMillan smashed one especially-nasty kill at the net, then flexed for a brief second as her teammates went wild.

By the time Taylor Brotemarkle zinged a nasty ace to cap the set, all the momentum was on Coupeville’s side of the court.

And it stayed that way throughout the second set, with Peabody controlling the net, while Gwen Gustafson started dropping bombs from all angles.

Heaton ran off four straight points on her serve to set the table, but it was McMillan (who else?) who closed the set with a run of nine consecutive points from the stripe.

With the match already decided, the two squads played a third set for practice, and, other than a brief burp late, it was much like everything else which had come before.

Brotemarkle, McMillan, Issabel Johnson, and Katie Marti delivered dagger after dagger on their serve as CHS built a 20-9 lead, but Concrete had one last rally in its back pocket.

The Lions, playing their best ball of the night, actually got all the way back within 22-19 before Coupeville slammed the door shut.

McMillan and Marti, the mighty mashers, both delivered withering kills to finally seal the three-set sweep, earning a nod of approval from coach Asley Menges.

Wolf booters snap La Conner hot streak

Two Murdy boys was two too many for La Conner to deal with.

With brothers Xavier and Alex combining to rain down three goals Tuesday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad knocked out La Conner 3-1 for a huge home turf victory.

Starting a stretch of three-straight games at Mickey Clark Field, the Wolves avenged an earlier-season overtime loss to the Braves, and emphatically ended La Conner’s five-game winning streak.

The victory, Coupeville’s second-straight, lifts it to 3-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, while dropping La Conner to 5-3.

“The team was great tonight, they really played for each other,” said CHS coach Robert Wood.

“This felt good after our last game with them, losing in the first overtime we’ve played,” he added.

“They’ve grown and learned and become friends and great teammates and understood tonight what happens when you play for yourself vs. the beauty that comes when you play for your team.”

Alex Murdy tallied two goals for the Wolves Tuesday, giving him three on the season, while Xavier Murdy beat the goalkeeper for the second time this campaign.

It was the fifth career score for X-Man.

“They were quality team goals, with great buildup play and aggressive finishing,” Wood said.

Coupeville put together a complete game, with “great leadership from the back line,” which consists of Jesse Wooten, Tony Garcia, Cameron Epp, and Andrew Williams.

Wolf goaltender Aidan Wilson was lights out as well.

“Awesome job. Challenged nicely three-four times, but held his ground and reacted well with solid game play and game management,” Wood said.

“Aidan was singled out by the ref, the La Conner coach, and some players for being fantastic.”

Coupeville defends its home pitch twice more this week, hosting Mount Vernon Christian Thursday and Providence Classical Christian Saturday.

Those games kickoff at 6:00 and 3:00 PM, respectively.

School Board candidate previously sued for “false imprisonment”

A Coupeville School Board candidate has an unusual court case in his background.

Ward Sparacio, who is vying for the Position 5 seat, was sued in 2009 over hijinks on the high seas.

Or, more appropriately, hijinks in the harbor.

Sparacio, Dan Bickford, Dave Wolfe, and Confirma, Inc. — a manufacturer of medical imaging devices — were defendants in a lawsuit in which Steven and Karen Slasinski sought damages for “false imprisonment.”

The case sprang from a July, 2007 dinner cruise on The Champagne Lady on Lake Washington, part of a week-long seminar for the Confirma sales team.

As the night came to a close, several employees were locked in the bathroom.

Court papers allege Steven Slasinski was unable to exit when the ship docked and other Confirma employees left the ship.

After being locked inside the bathroom for 20-25 minutes, he was released by the boat’s crew after they were alerted to his presence by his kicking the door in an effort to free himself.

Steven Slasinski sued for “damages arising from false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and breach of implied contract,” while Karen Slasinski filed for “damages arising from loss of consortium.”

A jury returned a verdict in favor of Confirma and its employees, and the decision was upheld after appeals.

According to his personal LinkedIn page, Sparacio was employed by Confirma as Vice President, Global Sales from Jan. 2007 through Sept. 2008.

He has held seven other jobs since, and is currently listed as Director, Commercial Innovation – Handheld Ultrasound for GE Healthcare, a position he has held since Feb. 2021.

Sparacio was listed as the Treasurer for the Island County Republican Party, though stepped away from that position when he filed for the school board race.

“Both teams did an exceptional job”

This time it was official.

Bouncing back after Langley failed to show for last week’s season opener, the Coupeville Middle School volleyball teams made it on the bus Monday and traveled to Lakewood.

While scores and stats were lost in the shuffle of a stats keeper leaving early, we do know the young Wolves put up a strong fight before falling to a school which funnels players to a 2A high school.

Coupeville’s B Team won a set during their match, eventually falling 2-1, while Team A was swept 2-0.

The effort put up, especially with ball in hand, was a big positive.

“Their serving was incredible and they all had high energy the whole game!,” said CMS coach Katie Kiel, while talking about Team B.

“Team A played extremely hard and hung in there the whole time!,” she added. “Team A had some beautiful serves as well, and a couple good kills.

“Both teams did an exceptional job for it being our first official match of the season.”

Monday’s matches were the first of three-straight on the road for the Wolves, with trips to Sultan Oct. 6 and to Shoreline to play King’s Oct. 11 next up.

Coupeville gets back in its own gym Oct. 13, when it hosts Granite Falls.

“Our middle school girls are evolving quickly and this game against Lakewood has given us many learning opportunities,” Kiel said.

“With another away game on Wednesday against Sultan, I hope the nerves are all shaken off and we refocus and do what we love most: play volleyball!”

They have a magic scoring touch

Two, for every one of yours.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer team is outscoring its male counterparts 12-6 through the first six games of the season.

That could be why the former team is 3-3, while the latter is 2-4.

Overall, 10 different Wolves have slapped the ball into the back of the net during fall 2021, led by Audrianna Shaw, who has tallied a school-best four goals.
