Three matches down to two.

This week’s schedule for the Coupeville High School volleyball squad took a hit Monday, with Mount Vernon Christian scratching matches due to Covid issues.

For the Wolves, that means Thursday’s planned trip to MVC is gone, rescheduled to Wednesday, Oct. 20.

JV will tip at 4:00, varsity at 5:30.

Coupeville (5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-2 overall) is still scheduled to host Concrete Tuesday on Dig Pink Night, then travel to La Conner Wednesday for a first-place showdown.

With the MVC match moved, CHS will close the regular season with four matches in as many days between Oct. 18-21.

Time for some home cooking.

After a week where more events were on the road than not, Coupeville High School’s fall sports teams will get the reverse this coming week.

Boys soccer has the sweetest deal, playing at home Tuesday (La Conner), Thursday (Mount Vernon Christian), and Saturday (Providence Classical Christian).

Wolf football is at home as well, hosting Meridian Saturday in a non-conference game, while both volleyball and girls soccer have mixed schedules.

The spikers play three days in a row, starting with a home contest Tuesday against Concrete.

After that comes back-to-back road trips Wednesday and Thursday, with La Conner and MVC the respective destinations.

Girls soccer starts with a trip to Mount Vernon Tuesday, to play the C-Team of a 4A school.

After that, the Wolf booters arrive back at Mickey Clark Field Thursday for a matchup with Northwest 2B/1B League big shot Mount Vernon Christian.

The lone team to not compete at home this coming week is cross country, which takes a bus to Lakewood Saturday for the annual Hole in the Wall Invite.

As we exit out of one week, and head into another one, we’ll go light on the words, and heavy on the pics.

Damian Lillard, watch your back.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone drained her first three-ball as a pro Saturday, part of a nine-point, eight-rebound performance which helped the Leicester Riders remain undefeated in Women’s British Basketball League action.

Coming off three straight wins in the WBBL Cup, the Riders opened regular-season play against the Nottingham Wildcats, and escaped with a 55-53 win.

Trailing by five points entering the fourth quarter, Leicester went with a unit which included Stone to kick off the final frame, and it paid off.

The former Wolf netted her trey with 8:18 to play, pulling the Riders back within 45-41.

A Stone jumper with 2:18 on the clock slashed the deficit to 50-49, before Chelsea Jennings put the Riders ahead with a layup.

Nottingham responded, though, draining its own three-ball to reclaim the lead, before Leicester gunner Hannah Robb knotted the game at 53-53 with just 34 seconds to play.

The Wildcats had a chance to win the game, but clanked their final shot, then committed the cardinal sin of fouling Leicester’s Anna Lappenkuper at the buzzer.

The Rider guard drained both free throws to cap the wild come-from-behind road win, lifting Leicester to 1-0, or 4-0 — depending on how you want to look at it.

Stone, who has been getting quality minutes off the bench in her inaugural pro season, has racked up 26 points, 29 rebounds, six assists, and a steal through the first four games.

She’s in there fighting.

Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott racked up six kills and a team-high seven digs Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Medaille College volleyball team to a win.

The Mavericks lost at Penn State-Altoona in their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener, falling 25-9, 25-19, 25-23.

Medaille is 0-1 in AMCC play, 3-9 overall, while Penn State-Altoona is 1-1, 7-2.

After a long stretch of road matches, Prescott and her teammates head home to Buffalo, New York for their next group.

First up is Hilbert College (0-2 in league, 0-9 overall), which comes to town Oct. 6.

Prescott, a freshman at NCAA D-III Medaille, has played in all 38 of her team’s sets, rolling up 59 kills, 90 digs, seven aces, seven assists, six block assists, and one solo block.

She has 70 points on offense this season, putting her third on a team of nine players.
