They ran with the big boys (and girls).

The Coupeville High School cross country team kicked off a new season Saturday with an appearance at the 42nd annual Carl Westling Invitational in Langley.

A day before, a storm ripped across Whidbey with ferocious winds turning the power off for much of the island.

But Saturday was fairly tranquil, offering the Wolves and first-year coach Paige Spangler a chance to strut their stuff.

Coupeville sent three girls to the line in the varsity race, while fielding a full seven-man varsity team and two runners in the JV rumble.

The Wolf boys held up very well, finishing 11th out of 13 teams in their division, despite the other squads all repping schools with larger student bodies.

Coupeville was the lone 2B team, with eight 1A schools, three 2A schools, and 4A Mariner also competing.

2A Cedarcrest claimed the team title, while Will Geisen of 2A Bellingham captured the individual crown, covering 5,000 meters in 16 minutes, 51.60 seconds.

On the girls side, Bellingham was the top team, with Kayla Aalpoel of 1A Meridian the first runner across the line in 19:20.70.

All together, the invitational featured runners from 29 high schools, while five middle schools competed in their own races.

“They did awesome! We may be small in numbers but we’re large in heart!!!”

A new season of Coupeville Middle School cross country dawned Saturday, and brought all the joy back to Wolf coach Elizabeth Bitting’s heart.

A day after rain and wind (mostly wind) buffeted Whidbey Island, the weather cooperated, and 10 CMS runners got their first chance to step to the line at a real competition.

The event was the Carl Westling Invitational in Langley, the 42nd edition of Whidbey’s premier gathering of harriers.

“What a beautiful day for the first race of the Coupeville Middle School cross country season!,” Bitting said. “No rain, no wind, and we had power!

“There were nerves, anxious feet, lots of questions, and loads of PR’s!!!”

The Wolf girls were up first, and her runners immediately made Bitting proud.

“Once that starting gun went off all nerves, doubts and fears faded, and all we saw were some determined runners!,” she said.

“I am so proud of what each of these runners accomplished at this, their first race,” Bitting added. “I cannot wait to see what the season brings! GO WOLVES!!!”

Even in defeat, Chelsea Prescott fills up the stat sheet.

The Coupeville High School grad played strongly Saturday, as she and her Medaille College teammates closed out the Buffalo State Women’s Volleyball Bengal Challenge.

The Mavericks fell in straights sets to Houghton College (25-18, 25-15, 25-16) and Alfred University (25-19, 25-22, 25-17), finishing 1-2 in the tourney.

Medaille is 3-6 on the season and returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 21 when it travels back to Buffalo State for a match with the Bengals.

Prescott and Co. are on the road for their next four matches, not playing on their own home court again until Oct. 6.

Saturday, the former Wolf picked up four kills and 11 digs against Houghton, then racked up a team-high five kills, a block assist and five more digs against Alfred.

During her freshman season of NCAA D-III volleyball, Prescott has played in all 27 sets, racking up 43 kills, 66 digs, seven service aces, four assists, a solo block, and four block assists.

Kyle Nelson summed up his day in four words.

Asked how the Coupeville High School girls soccer team had done Saturday, the veteran coach kept his post-game comments crisp and clear.

“Well, not so great.”

Coming off a season-opening home win against league rival La Conner, the Wolves trekked off Whidbey for game two, and found a barrage of goals awaiting them.

Facing off with East Jefferson, the result of Chimacum and Port Townsend combining their sports programs, Coupeville’s booters fell 9-0.

The loss evens the early-season record at 1-1.

The Wolves get right back at it next week, with two games, neither of which are likely to be easy.

Coupeville hits the road Tuesday, Sept. 21 to face defending Northwest 2B/1B League champ Mount Vernon Christian, which was a juggernaut last season.

The Hurricanes have picked right back up where they left off and are 4-0-1 overall, 1-0 in league play this season.

CHS then hosts 1A Granite Falls (2-2-1) Thursday, Sept. 23 in a non-conference tilt.

Chelsea Prescott had herself a nice night.

Playing Friday in the first match of the Buffalo State Women’s Volleyball Bengal Challenge, the former Wolf was a key to Medaille College nabbing a tense straight-sets win.

The Mavericks nipped Cazenovia College 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 to claim their third win in their last four matches.

Medaille, now 3-4 on the season, returns to action Saturday in New York, facing off with Houghton College and Alfred University.

Prescott was a multi-faceted weapon against Cazenovia, racking up seven kills, two assists, two service aces, a block assist, and 15 digs.

She was one of several Maverick spikers to enjoy a hot streak, with Chase Luebeck pounding out nine kills and Haley Kennedy rolling up 29 assists.

During her freshman season of NCAA D-III volleyball, Prescott has played in all 21 sets, racking up 34 kills, 50 digs, seven aces, four assists, a solo block, and three block assists.
