Track and field is all about the numbers.

Every tenth-of-a-second, every inch, is the difference between nabbing another PR and exiting the stadium with a little extra skip in your step.

But now, as we enter the final week of the season, the game has changed a bit for the last 16 Coupeville High School track stars still standing.

Nine Wolf boys and seven girls are off to Cheney this weekend for the state tourney. When they get there, they’ll still want PR’s, but the hunt is also on for medals, and, possibly, state titles.

It’s been eight long years since a Coupeville athlete won top honors.

You have to go back to the spring of 2010, when Tyler King stood atop the podium in the 1600 and 3200 to find a Wolf state champ.

That performance came in his junior season, and he followed it up by winning a state title in cross country to kick off his senior year.

From that moment on, no CHS athlete has achieved nirvana, not even King himself, as he finished second in the 800, 1600 and 3200 as a senior.

But once again, as a new state meet approaches, there is hope.

And it’s real hope, as Wolf senior Jacob Smith is among the fastest in all of 1A in the 100 and 200, while junior Lindsey Roberts is just a step or two off in the 100 hurdles.

Smith qualified for state in four events (100, 200, 4 x 1, 4 x 2), matching what Maya Toomey-Stout accomplished last season.

If he were to medal in all of his events, he would join Jon Chittim as the only Wolves to earn four competitive medals in one state meet.

Chittim won state titles in the 200, 400 and 4 x 4, while finishing seventh in the 100 that season.

Five of Coupeville’s 16 state-bound athletes will arrive in Cheney with at least one competitive state track meet medal already in their collection, and all can make a move up the all-time list for Wolf track stars.

Roberts has claimed four medals in her first two seasons, while Smith (2), Danny Conlisk (1), Mallory Kortuem (1) and Maya Toomey-Stout (1) have also earned previous honors.

In the history of CHS track, there are 21 athletes who have captured three or more medals in competition.

They are:

Tyler King (11)
Kyle King (10)
Makana Stone (7)
Natasha Bamberger (6)

Conlisk hangs out in Pasco with South Whidbey training partners Michael Cepowski (left) and Callahan Yale.

Conlisk and his cold, but proud, mom.

He ran for his school.

He ran for his family and friends.

And, ultimately, he ran in a vain bid to get warm.

The first Coupeville High School cross country runner to compete at the 1A state meet since 2010, Wolf junior Danny Conlisk braved the icy weather in Pasco Saturday, finishing 124th in a field of 156 runners.

He covered 5,000 frigid meters at the Sun Willows Golf Course in 18:06.9.

Kenneth Rooks of College Place capped a stellar career with his second title in three years, hitting the tape in 15:18.

Rooks also won a title at the 1B/2B level as a sophomore, then placed fourth in 1A last season.

Coupeville, which boasts two state title winners (Tyler King in 2010 and Natasha Bamberger in 1985) doesn’t have an active harrier program of its own.

Because of that, Conlisk and his fellow Wolf runners — brothers Henry and Sam Wynn — trained and traveled with South Whidbey this year.

Two of Conlisk’s Falcon buddies, Michael Cepowski and Callahan Yale, also made it to state, finishing 46th and 133rd, respectively.

Medical Lake captured the 1A boys team title, while Klahowya, the only Olympic League school to qualify its entire squad, finished 11th out of 16 teams.

On the girls side, South Whidbey placed 10th out of 16 teams during Saturday’s race.

Freshman Kaia Swegler Richmond was the top Falcon, finishing 14th out of 152 runners.

Conlisk, who became a running convert in recent years, is now a three-time state meet vet, having already punched his ticket in track and field as both a freshman and sophomore.

And, in a neat little twist, the number he wore during Saturday’s meet (#212) matches his birthday, Feb. 12.

As Danny Conlisk stepped to the start line Saturday, the odds were stacked against him.

He had been very sick earlier in the week.

He wasn’t ranked high enough for those on the outside to view him as a major contender.

No one from Coupeville High School had qualified for the state meet in cross country since 2010.

It mattered not.

Conlisk, the smooth-running, serene king of the trail, outran the doubters, his ranking and the screams of his own personal fan club to finish 7th at the West Central District 3 meet at University Place, punching his ticket to the big dance.

After competing at state in track as both a freshman and sophomore, the Wolf junior became the first CHS harrier since Tyler King to qualify for the biggest cross country race of the year.

To achieve the feat, Conlisk needed to place in the top 14 Saturday. Since he entered ranked #21 in a 48-man field, it seemed like a bit of a long shot.

Never doubt the heart of a champion.

Conlisk took three seconds off his PR, clocking in at 17:45.50 seconds while covering 5,000 meters.

“I am mighty proud of him,” said mom Dawnelle Conlisk. “I think Abby Parker and I were more nervous than he was.

“So fun to watch. He passed us in 7th on the first go-by, and at mile two he was still in 7th. We screamed like girls!! So thankful I booked a room for state a few weeks ago.”

Jared Donnel of Bellevue Christian won the individual title, while Charles Wright Academy took the team crown.

The state meet is Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

Conlisk will be a lone Wolf at the big meet, as his CHS teammates, Sam and Henry Wynn, didn’t make the cut.

Sam, a freshman, finished 41st in 20:38.50, while Henry, a senior, capped his career by hitting the tape in 45th (21:26.60).

Smith and proud (and now hoarse) mom Deb after he shattered his school mark in the 200.

Don’t get into a leaning contest with Jacob Smith.

The Coupeville High School junior showed off his ability to stretch every last centimeter of his body while in motion Saturday, holding off a rival runner by .01 of a second to claim 3rd in the 200 at the 1A state track and field championships.

Running under scorching skies in Cheney, Smith shattered his own school record in the event, hitting the line in 22.41 seconds.

It was the second straight year he medaled in the event, and, with the lean, he improved a slot after finishing fourth in 2016.

Caleb Perry of King’s topped Keyhon Ross of Medical Lake to claim the title, reversing their finish from last season.

With both of those runners seniors, that moves Smith into the role of favorite heading into his senior campaign.

Smith’s sizzling finish was one of three medals the Wolves claimed Saturday, along with 5th place finishes in the 400 from sophomore Danny Conlisk and by the girls 4 x 200 relay squad.

It was the first state medal for Conlisk, whose time of 50.59 seconds was just .04 off of his PR set Friday in the prelims.

The CHS relay unit, made up of freshmen Maya Toomey-Stout and Mallory Kortuem, sophomore Lindsey Roberts and senior Lauren Grove, put together a 1:46.58 run.

That was just off the school mark of 1:46.41 set last year by Roberts, Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone.

It earned the two freshmen their first medals, while the veteran duo each ran away with the fourth of their career.

That ties them for the fourth-most state medals won by a CHS girl, trailing just Makana Stone (7), Natasha Bamberger (6) and Yashmeen Knox (5).

With the three medals earned Saturday, added to Mitchell Carroll’s 5th place showing in the triple jump Friday, Coupeville exited Cheney with four medals.

The Wolf boys finished 19th in the team standings, second-best showing of any 1A Olympic League schools.

Port Townsend, which was led by Seren Dances winning state titles in the 110 and 300 hurdles as well as the long jump, finished third, while King’s won the team title.

Coupeville’s fellow Olympic League school, Chimacum, was 37th while Island rival South Whidbey finished 40th.

In the girls battle, Lakeside rolled to a team win, with South Whidbey (19th), Port Townsend (25th) and Coupeville (34th) well back.

Chimacum’s girls, and both Klahowya squads, failed to score any points this time around.

The Wolves had two other shots at adding to their team point totals, but Carroll and Ariah Bepler missed out on medals Saturday by the slimmest of margins.

Carroll, a senior, hit a PR of 20 feet, 5.25 inches in the long jump, finishing 10th, while Bepler, a junior, tied his PR of 5-10 in the high jump and claimed 9th.

Bepler’s final try at 6-00 (a height which would have earned him a medal) was super-close, but the pole refused to stay up after he brushed it slightly with his foot on the way over.

Still, it was an impressive state meet debut for the lanky one, who was competing in front of family including dad Mark, who claimed 4th in the discus for CHS back in 1986.

The Wolves went East and found joy and heartbreak.

With day one of the 1A state championships in the books, the Coupeville High School track and field squad can reflect on a Friday full of huge highs and a few unexpected lows.

The biggest thrill came from senior Mitchell Carroll, who shattered the school record in the triple jump for the second straight meet en route to nabbing the Wolves first medal.

Flying 8.75 inches further than he had at districts, Carroll nabbed 5th place.

Coupeville guaranteed itself at least three more medals Saturday, after Jacob Smith (200), Danny Conlisk (400) and the girls 4 x 200 relay unit (Lauren Grove, Maya Toomey-Stout, Mallory Kortuem and Lindsey Roberts) successfully made it through prelims.

Conlisk roared to a win in his heat, and will enter finals seeded #2.

While Smith and the girls relay team will each be bringing home a medal, they missed out on doubling up their hardware by the slimmest of margins.

We’re talking .13 of a second to be exact, which is how close Smith was to advancing in the 100, and the relay squad was in the 4 x 100.

Roberts, who was running in three events despite suffering through a horrible sinus cold, suffered the day’s biggest heartbreak.

After finishing 4th in the 100 hurdles as a freshman, she entered Friday’s race as a top contender.

But in a very short race, with no margin for error, she lost her stride after accidentally clipping her trail leg and couldn’t recover.

Still, when she and Grove run in the 4 x 200 Saturday, both will capture the fourth state meet medal of their careers.

That puts them in lofty territory, as only five other CHS girls have matched that total in the 117-year history of the school.

While Grove is a senior, Roberts has two years to keep chasing former Wolf legends Makana Stone (seven medals), Natasha Bamberger (6) and Yashmeen Knox (5).

Sylvia Hurlburt and Madison Tisa-McPhee also had four medals apiece when they graduated.

Hot on her heels is Toomey-Stout, who became the first girl in school history to compete in four events at the same state meet.

While she didn’t advance in the 100, “The Gazelle” came dangerously close to the school record.

The fab frosh broke the line in 12.97 seconds, just off of Coupeville’s top mark of 12.89, set in 2005 by Janiece Jenkins.

The Wolves compete in five finals Saturday, with Carroll (Long Jump) and Ariah Bepler (High Jump) joining Smith, Conlisk and the girls 4 x 200.
