Coupeville’s finest, (l to r) Ashlie Shank, Sarah Wright, Smith and Ashley Menges, get photobombed by Steve “Big Papa” Kiel.

Every great sports photographer knows one important trick — don’t spend all your time focused on the on-court action.

At any Coupeville High School basketball game, there are a ton of other things going on worthy of a pic or two.

Be it band, cheer, celebrity sightings or just people goofing off, you need to get good color to go with the sports action.

The photos above, snapped at Wednesday’s Wolf doubleheader against Orcas Island, come to us courtesy Diet Coke-lovin’ camera clicker John Fisken.

Like what you see?

Well, like I said, he likes his Diet Coke and he’s scheduled to be shooting at Friday night’s CHS girls’ basketball games.

Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, oh wait, is that a concession stand that sells Diet Coke?!?!

How convenient.

Mckenzie Meyer (John Fisken photos)

Mckenzie Meyer pulled double duty, bouncing between band and cheer all night long. She also ripped off a string of cartwheels (seriously) for extra credit. (John Fisken photos)

Who hides behind the mascot heads? It’s a state secret.

“A sax solo? You don’t have to ask twice.”

It ain’t a thing, unless it’s got that swing.

Stepping up bold and loud, the Coupeville High School pep band, with some help from a guest appearance by the Oak Harbor High School pep band, made its season debut Wednesday when it held court at the Wolf basketball doubleheader.

In between wailing on their instruments and screaming their lungs out in support of their hoops teams, the band members also snagged some photo ops thanks to travelin’ clicker John Fisken.

The CHS band, while not all pictured here, includes:

Jamar Jenkins (Instructor)
Jakobi Baumann
Jaschon Baumann
Nick Blalock
Laurence Boado

Savanna (John Fisken photos)

Oliana Stange lays down some torrid tracks.

Allison

Hair in a braid? A ferocious defensive terror on the basketball court. Hair down? Ready to bring in the funk ‘n the soul. Allison Wenzel, double threat.

John McClarin

John McClarin (center) prepares to play the single greatest note ever let loose in flute history.

Mckenzie Meyer

Mckenzie Meyer can wail with the best of them.

flute

“Yeah, I heard your “magical note,” McClarin. Get ready to be blown out of your seat as I reclaim the title of World’s Greatest Flutist!!”

The band played on, even in tight quarters.

With Tuesday night’s CHS girls’ basketball games bounced across the hallway into the much-smaller middle school gym (technical problems), everyone ended up on top of each other.

That didn’t stop the Wolf house band from letting loose with some tunes, however.

And, it also gave bass player extraordinaire Savanna Dohner a chance to play for her classmates and fans one final time.

The prodigiously talented sophomore is transferring to Oak Harbor High School after a family move, but she will always be the Queen of Cow Town (cow bell and all).

Rock on, Savvy. You will always have two homes.

“Thank you, thank you, I’ll be here all season! No autographs, please … OK, maybe one or two!!”

Can I get a round of applause for the band?

Just like the athletes at CHS and CMS, those who choose to pick up an instrument have committed their time and energy and deserve to have a moment in the spotlight.

And, for that matter, so do those brave enough to dance in the stands while the band plays.

For all of you, today’s your day. Job well done.

Beauman Davis (right)

Beauman Davis (right) clamps down on defense during the first day of basketball practice Monday. (John Fisken photo)

Beauman Davis lets his actions speak for him.

A hustler and a scrapper on the basketball court, the Coupeville High School junior is a man of few words in interviews.

But that’s fine, since the small forward is content to play the game and let others spend their time making small talk.

He values “my teammates” and first started playing hoops for the challenge.

“This is my second year of basketball,” Davis said. “I started last year because it sounded like it would be a great experience.”

He draws inspiration from “my parents, my coaches and my classmates” and is hard at work on all the facets of his game.

“I think my strengths are playing inside the key,” Davis said. “And I am working on my perimeter shooting.”

Away from basketball, he has played tennis and soccer for CHS and is in the school band.

A fan of the horror film “Insidious,” Davis is splitting his time and focus between the classroom, the athletic world and playing music.

“My other primary objectives are school, and music, and I like hip hop and jazz music,” he said.
