They’re the net queens of three districts.

Sparked by a singles title from Helen Strelow and a 2nd place performance from the doubles duo of Vivian Farris and Hayley Fiedler, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad stood tall Friday in Seattle.

Holding off league rival Friday Harbor as well as Three Rivers Christian of Longview, the Wolves captured some hardware, bringing home the District 1/2/4 team title.

Now, Strelow and coach Ken Stange are off to the 1B/2B state tourney, which goes down May 26-27 at the Yakima Tennis Club.

For the Wolf net guru, who announced his retirement recently, it will be his sixth trip to the big dance since taking over the CHS tennis programs in 2005.

Strelow, a senior who twice ran at the state cross country meet, will be joined by Friday Harbor’s Megan Mellinger and Kira Clark, who pulled out a three-set win to capture the doubles crown.

Tri-District action went down at the swanky Amy Yee Tennis Center, with each school sending two singles players and two doubles teams.

The tourney was a single-elimination event, with the top seeds (Strelow and Farris/Fiedler) given a first-round bye.

To win her singles title, Strelow faced off with a pair of new rivals, fending off players from Three Rivers Christian to run her season record to 10-1.

Her only loss this spring was to a rival from 3A Mount Vernon in a match added to the schedule at the last moment.

Farris and Fiedler, who split a pair of sets before being edged 12-10 in an epic third-set tiebreaker in the doubles championship, finished 7-4 on the season.

Five of Coupeville’s six players at Tri-Districts depart after this season, with foreign exchange student Djina Radenovic joining seniors Lucy Tenore, Farris, Fiedler, and Strelow.

Junior Skylar Parker, who teamed with Tenore to capture a first-round win Friday, can return.

Friday results:

Helen Strelow:

Beat Aurora Fortunati (Three Rivers Christian) 7-5, 4-6, 10-7
Beat Jenna Dennis (Three Rivers Christian) 6-4, 7-6(7-1)

Djina Radenovic:

Lost to Jenna Dennis (Three Rivers Christian) 6-2, 6-0

Hayley Fiedler/Vivian Farris:

Beat Ava Martin/Georgia Keune (Friday Harbor) 6-1, 6-3
Lost to Megan Mellinger/Kira Clark (Friday Harbor) 7-5, 4-6, 12-10

Lucy Tenore/Skylar Parker:

Beat Brynn Stephans/Gracie Cowan (Three Rivers Christian) 6-1, 6-2

Win, or go home.

And yes, the Coupeville High School track and field team was already home Saturday, hosting the District 1/2 championships at Mickey Clark Field.

But every race, every field event, was a nailbiter, as the only way athletes earned their ticket to state was by winning.

Finish second Saturday and you got a firm handshake, but that was it.

Which was fine by the Wolves, who went out and won 18 events en route to capturing both girls and boys team titles.

“We are the champions … of the world.” (Bob Martin photo)

Coupeville’s girls had themselves a truly epic day, rolling up more points than the second and third best teams combined.

The Wolves finished with 225 points, with Friday Harbor (109), La Conner (83), and Northwest Christian of Lacey (72) bringing up the rear.

The battle was closer on the boy’s side, with Coupeville (194) pulling away from La Conner (146) and Friday Harbor (131) late.

NWC was well back with just 39 points.

Once they add alternates for the girls 4 x 400 relay and the boys 4 x 100 unit, the Wolves are expecting to pack 22 athletes onto the bus for the trip to Yakima.

After a long run in Cheney, the 2B state meet jumps to Zaepfel Stadium this season, with the royal rumble slated for May 25-27.

Lyla Stuurmans, Aidan Wilson, Monroe Myles, and Carolyn Lhamon all qualified for two individual events, with the first three of those Wolves also part of a state meet-qualifying relay team.

Wilson, Ryanne Knoblich, Reiley Araceley, and Dominic Coffman are the only active CHS track stars to have earned state meet medals in prior years.

Knoblich was 2nd in the high jump last season, while Wilson was 3rd in the 800.

Wilson also teamed up with Coffman, Araceley, and the now graduated Caleb Meyer to finish 2nd in the 4 x 100.

Coupeville High School seniors Jonathan Valenzuela (left) and Scott Hilborn were nine-year-olds the last time Wolf baseball went to state. (Morgan White photo)

Party like it’s 2014.

Thrashing Friday Harbor 11-0 Saturday in Arlington in a game mercy-ruled after five innings, the Coupeville High School baseball squad continues to rack up honors.

With the victory, the Wolves, now 16-5 on the season, add the District 1/2 title to their Northwest 2B/1B League crown, while earning a trip to the big dance for the first time in nine seasons.

The last time a CHS hardball squad went to the state tourney, Willie Smith was still head coach, current assistant coach Morgan Payne was in the starting lineup, and Coupeville was nipped 2-1 by Rochester in a first-round loss.

This time around, the Wolves are one of 12 teams still alive in the hunt for the 2B crown.

They will learn their opening opponent and the location of the game Sunday when the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association seeding committee releases its bracket.

First round and quarterfinal games will be played May 20 at various sites, with the semifinals May 26 and the title game and 3rd/4th place game May 27.

The May 26 and 27 games are set for Johnson-O’Brien Stadium at Ephrata High School.

The first two rounds of state are single elimination, with the top four seeds earning a first-round bye.

Coupeville baseball had to wait a bit longer than expected to earn its tenth trip to state, with bi-districts delayed thanks to Friday Harbor having issues with the state ferry system.

Once the Wolverines, the #2 seed from District 1, arrived in Arlington, they jumped all over District 2’s Northwest Christian (Lacey), running them off the field 16-0 in a loser-out game.

The day’s second game was also a blowout, but this time Friday Harbor was the one being battered senseless.

Coupeville hit the field hot and never relented, scoring in all four innings in which it sent batters to the plate.

The Wolves slapped three runs on the board in the first, netting all the runs starting pitcher Scott Hilborn would need.

Jonathan Valenzuela lashed a two-run double to center to get CHS going, then came around to score on a Friday Harbor wild pitch.

Hilborn, who struck out eight while limiting the Wolverines to just a pair of hits and a lone walk, was fairly flawless, while his defense removed one brief threat with a slickly turned double play.

From 3-0, Coupeville pushed its lead out to 7-0 through two, then made it 10-0 after three, and 11-0 coming out of the fourth frame.

The Wolves finished with 13 hits in four innings worth of at-bats, with seven different hitters racking up at least one base knock.

Aiden O’Neill and Peyton Caveness crunched RBI doubles in the second, then both came around later to swat RBI singles.

The last of O’Neill’s run-scoring hits plated courtesy runner Landon Roberts to close the scoring, before Hilborn ended the game with three straight strikeouts.

Coupeville’s stellar season has come courtesy of a young team, as seven of the 11 players sent into Saturday’s game by first-year CHS head coach Steve Hilborn are freshmen or sophomores.

Scott Hilborn and Valenzuela are the only seniors, while starters Chase Anderson, Coop Cooper, Camden Glover, and O’Neill are 9th graders.

Saturday stats:

Chase Anderson — Two singles
Peyton Caveness — Two singles, one double
Camden Glover — One walk
Scott Hilborn — Two singles
Aiden O’Neill — One single, one double
Jack Porter — One single
Johnny Porter — One walk
Jonathan Valenzuela — One single, one double, one walk
Cole White — One single

The Wolves run to playoff success. (Bailey Thule photo)

“These girls are not ready to stop playing.”

The Coupeville High School girls’ varsity basketball squad, led by their Fab Five seniors, won their second-straight loser-out game, bouncing visiting Auburn Adventist Academy 39-29 Monday in the bi-district opener.

Now 10-10, Megan Richter’s pack of scrappy ballhawks return to their home floor Wednesday to face either La Conner (17-4) or Northwest Christian of Lacey (7-7) for the tourney title and the lone berth to state being awarded to girls’ teams in Districts 1/2.

The Braves and Wolverines were also supposed to play Monday, but their game was bumped to Tuesday after high winds affected the Port Townsend ferry, stranding NWC on the mainland.

La Conner and NWC’s girls now play Tuesday at 7 PM, bumping the boys’ playoff game between Coupeville and NWC from 6:45 up to 5:15.

Having endured a tiebreaker game to earn their playoff ticket, Coupeville’s girls were playing for the third time in four days when they took the floor Monday night.

But the Wolves were also playing at home for the first time in a week, they were wearing their snazzy black uniforms, and the fan base — including several former Wolf coaches — was solidly on their side.

And they responded in style, jumping on Auburn quickly and leading from first bucket to final buzzer.

Springy sophomore Lyla Stuurmans, who drove the Falcon ballhandlers batty all game on defense, knocked down a running layup off of a long pass from Maddie Georges, and things were underway.

An early three-ball from Alita Blouin, and another breakaway bucket from Stuurmans staked Coupeville to an early 9-2 lead, though the Falcons fought back.

Hitting the first of its five treys, Auburn sliced the lead back down to 9-7 heading into the final minute of the opening frame, setting up a potential back-and-forth brawl.

But the Wolves responded, and quickly, with Georges burying a three-ball of her own, before coming back around to fuel yet another Stuurmans layup with a precision half-court pass.

Toss in a free throw off the fingers of Mia Farris, and CHS was up 15-7 at the first break and in control.

Not that Auburn gave in, however, as the Falcons fought for every loose ball and rebound, slicing its deficit back to four points right before halftime.

To which Georges, a four-year varsity vet, said, “Not my gym, not tonight,” banking home a three-ball which beat the buzzer by .000000002 of a second.

“I will make them cry. I promise you that!” (Bailey Thule photo)

The well-timed bomb from Georges sent Coupeville to the break leading 24-17, and the Wolves pushed their lead into double digits early in the third quarter.

Ryanne Knoblich knocked down back-to-back buckets, one off of a rebound, the other set up by a Carolyn Lhamon kick-out pass, before Gwen Gustafson started rainin’ baskets from mid-range, putting the cherry on the sundae.

Auburn rattled home a pair of three-balls in the fourth quarter, but otherwise could not get anything going, while Coupeville milked the clock and eased home with the win.

Six of eight Wolves to see the floor Monday scored, led by Blouin, who popped for a game-high 11 points.

Georges (9), Knoblich (8), Stuurmans (6), Gustafson (4), and Farris (1) also scored, while Lhamon and Katie Marti dominated on the boards.

Several Wolves hit personal milestones in the playoff win, led by Georges, who moves past Shawna West (388) and lands at #25 on the CHS girls all-time scoring list.

The fiery, yet composed, Wolf point guard, sits with 393 career points, while Blouin became the 61st Wolf girl to crack the 200-point club since the program launched in 1974.

She’s collected 204 points — tying her with Izzy Wells at #58 all-time — while playing in just 22 games.

Injuries limited Blouin to two games through her junior year, but she’s bounced back to start all 20 contests during her senior season.

Lastly, Stuurmans, just a sophomore, cracked the 125-point club.

With 130 and counting, she passes two former players with a direct connection to this year’s team — Christi Messner (125) and Kayla Lawson (124).

Messner is the mom of Stuurman’s fellow sophomore, Katie Marti, and was on the PA system Monday night, while Lawson is the sister of current Wolf JV coach Kassie O’Neil.

It took some extra work, but they’re in.

The Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball team had to go to a tiebreaker, and hold off Friday Harbor by a single point, but the Wolves are playoff bound.

CHS will be at home for their postseason rumbles, as well, hosting the bi-district tourney next week.

The four-team single-elimination tilt kicks off Monday with a doubleheader, then wraps Wednesday with one team punching its ticket to state.
